West fest, Feeder only, Tamar
Day 5

Having dodged all the fliers all week, I had next to no chance of framing going into the last day. I did have an idea that I thought might give me an early run of skimmers….. 1.5hrs into the match with next to nothing in the net, I gave up on that! 🤦‍♂️

I then went roach fishing, catching 100 in just over 1.5hrs. By that time, I felt the skimmers would be feeding, but I lost another hour waiting for a run that lasted just 13 fish!

In hindsite, a back to back roach match would have put me close to a section win, but hey ho. Well done to Graham West on the next peg who did win the section by fishing a much more sensible match - the first half of the match for roach and the second half for skimmers.

Well done to Micheal Buchwalder for winning the festival.

I’ve had a great week at Tamar, with a 2nd in match, 1x section win and 2 x 2nd in sections and apart from today, over 20lb a match.

West Fest feeder only, Tamar
Day 3

Two pegs to the right of the point on the boated section. I’ve had a ridiculously slow start, catching 15 minor skimmers in 3 hrs! Luckily, more fish arrived late in along with a few better skimmers - almost all in the pellet feeder and maggot or wafters on the hook.

42 skimmers went 10 kilo - a great day but not the 20 kilo is desperately need!

Well done to Ian Giddins wining the section and the match!

West Fest Feeder Only, Tamar
Day 3

In my hunt for a 20 kilo peg, I was hoping to draw the Gorse Bush… it was still in the bag with two left and I still didn’t get it! ☹️ Last peg on Devon going up the arm it is then!

Lining fish up has been impossible! Window feeder, rockets, pellet feeder and silo have all caught fish along with maggot, pinkie, worm head, redworm and wafter hookbaits! 31 skimmers and 17 accidentals gave me 13 kilo 400g for another 2nd in section.

Well done Zak, “I’ve only got 10 kilo” Williams for winning the section again with 14 kilo 550g

2 days still to go 🤞

West Fest feeder only, Tamar
Day 2

After a damage limitation roach day yesterday, I’ve ended up on the top end of Cornwall bank fishing for roach again!

230 fish went 11 kilo 775g for second in section, beaten by Zak Williams with a near 14 kilo skimmer weight.

The festival is on weight, so although I’ve had a 1st and 2nd in section, I recon I’ll be about 20th currently. A big weight is required! 🎣

West Fest at Tamar - day 1
Feeder only match

Peg 5 on Devon.

The area didn’t fish great in the Feedermasters yesterday, so my plan was to keep putting some bait out for skimmers, but spend as long as possible fishing for roach. As it happens, I only gave the skimmers an unsuccessful 40 minute try, which turned out to be the right decision as I’ve won the section with 9 kilo of roach.

Using a 10ft Affinium, I’ve under armed a 20g 3 hole Feederland cage feeder rammed with Aquastim Biogrub, maggots and casters, with maggot being best on the hook.

The venue seems to have fished really well, with 3 of the 5 zones being won with 20 kilo plus!

Got a last minute ticket for today’s Garbolino Qualifier at Tamar. It didn’t seem like such a good idea when the alarm clock went off at 3:45am followed by a 4hr 15minute drive! 🤯

Luckily I’ve had a great day catching skimmers on Seed Drill, finishing with 10 kilo and 2nd in the match. I would have also qualified for the final, but unfortunately I’m unavailable.

A lay in tomorrow 😴 then a walk around the Feedermasters qualifier, then it’s Day 1 of West Fest on Monday. Wish me luck! 🤞

A brilliant day today testing out the new Daiwa UK Supercast rods at Boddington.

The plan was to start at 90m and take it from there - as it happens that is where I stopped all day catching 16 carp for near 200lb for the Angling Times cameras manned by Antony Grigorjevs.

With the amount of fish feeding, I’d probably have caught a lot more fishing about 30m, but that wouldn’t be much of a test for a distance rod though would it? Instead, it was good fun trying to keep as accurate as possible on quite a windy day!

Look out for a load of content on the Angling Times socials tomorrow and an in depth review in the magazine in a couple of weeks.

Guru A-Class rods, reels and landing net handle all hit the shops tomorrow, with every item under £100.

What gear you can now get at such sensible prices is unbelievable! If you need to get yourself kitted out at a sensible price, make sure you take a look.

Any teams need an angler for the Division 1 National?

I really fancy fishing this match but unfortunately, my team Black Horse don’t currently fish the nationals (we are all too busy during summer!).
