Part two. Knee pain for cyclists, is it normal? Short answer, No.
So refreshing your memory from part one, cleat placement has a huge part to play in eliminating/preventing knee pain. Once the foundation has been set (cleat placement), our next key contact point is the saddle.
Saddle height too low or too high is a cause of knee pain. Too low you’re putting a lot of strain on the knees. Too high you will be overstretching the knee again, causing discomfort. Saddle angles and position also have a huge factor on knee pain, too nose down of a saddle angle and you will constantly find yourself slipping forward on the saddle. This potentially forcing your knees too far over the pedal equalling in knee pain. Saddle position too far forward or too far back will bring your knee out of alignment from where it needs to be, leading onto you guessed it, knee pain.
As you can see, there’s quite a lot to knee pain and especially in eliminating it. There are multiple adjustments you can make and sometimes one change you make will then throw something else out. That’s why I strongly believe a professional bike fit is the way forward. Working with someone who knows the body and how it should operate on the bike. Taking into consideration previous injuries and your physical limits. If you are experiencing knee pain drop a 🔥 If you’re reading this back thinking wow, where do I start/don’t have the time to figure this out on your own. Comment ‘Knee pain’ below and I’d be happy to help whether this be by consultation, virtual or in person bike fitting. Cycling is something to be enjoyed, just one ni**le and it can ruin the whole experience. Let’s get back to happy and injury free riding 😊

“Everyone should get a bike fit…don’t wait until the start of the year, get it done now so you can get used to it before the season starts” Not my words but I couldn’t agree more. This is what my client had said during our session. He mentioned how nothing was specifically ‘uncomfortable’ but after reviewing photos of himself he felt maybe his position wasn’t quite right. Initially thought that as the season had finished he’d wait until the season got started again to come in for a fit (5 ish months from now…) A friend of his had already been in to see me this year and recommended this rider to do it sooner rather than later to get used to the position ahead of the season. Again, another comment I couldn’t agree with more. If you’ve been wondering about getting a bike fit and not sure when to get yourself in, now is the perfect time. Give yourself the perfect head start to one of the best seasons you’ve ever had so far in the most optimal bike position tailored for you.

Part one. Knee pain for cyclists, is it normal? Short answer, No.
I see a lot of cyclists just keep riding through the pain or think that it is a part of cycling. This really isn’t the case. Your body is screaming to you that there’s a problem, one that definitely needs to be sorted. Listen to the scream and don’t keep pushing through the pain. Likely you’ll end up having more time off the thing you love, riding then if we just stop, recover and address the issue.
The fact is that there are multiple reasons that knee pain can occur. In this post I’ll give you a few noters to consider.
Every bike fit I do starts from the ground up. Cleat placement is the foundation of a great bike fit. Where they are placed, fore/aft and the angle of the cleat have a big part to play. Too far forward of a cleat equals pedalling over your toes. When pedalling out of the saddle your knees will track too far over your toes and this misalignment can cause pain. If you are experiencing knee pain on the outside of your knees, cleat angles may need to be adjusted to be more natural to you.
Once the foundation has been set, our next key contact point is the saddle. Follow for part two. It’s a pretty big subject and one that can’t be put in one post.
