As part of Thorpe St Andrew School’s Curriculum Enhancement Week, students are given the opportunity to choose a physical activity to take part in.
For the third year running, we welcomed 30 young girls to Hustle for a day designed to challenge perceptions, build confidence and show them what they are truly capable of.
Many arrived believing they wouldn’t be good enough, strong enough or skilled enough to take part. It’s a mindset we see all too often. The great thing about Hustle is that our coaches know how to create an environment where people feel comfortable, supported and confident enough to try something new.
The day started with an introduction to boxing. The girls learned how to stand, move, throw punches and defend themselves, with many stepping outside their comfort zone from the very first minute.
From there, our coaching team guided them through movement screening and strength fundamentals, teaching the basics of squatting, hinging and moving well. Skills that can benefit them for life, both inside and outside the gym.
To finish the day, the girls took part in a team-based HYROX-style competition, working together, encouraging one another and discovering they could achieve far more than they thought possible.
Not every young person connects with traditional school sports, and that’s okay. We wanted the girls to see that activities like boxing, strength training and HYROX-style fitness are available to everyone, regardless of their experience, ability or sporting background.
For some, the day may have simply been fun. For others, it may have opened the door to something they never thought was for them.
If even a handful of the girls left thinking, “Maybe I can do this after all,” then the day was a success.
