Equipment check: Bio Electrical Impedance System

What is it?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA) is a method of measuring your body composition.

What it does?
This gives us information such as body fat percentage.

Why is it useful?
Understanding your body composition is very useful as it enables us to understand how our body changes if we are increasing or decreasing body weight.

What will it allow me to take away from the session?

From your session, you will take away what percentage of your body mass is made up of body fat.

Cleat Fit is the first system that allows the measurements taken on the foot to be transferred directly to the sole of the shoe.

Aligning the cleat with the pedal axis will be simple and extremely precise. Thanks to a laser beam and a goniometric disc, the position and orientation of the cleat will be perfect.

Available as part of your fit at now.

Our equipment: EMG Muscle Activation System

What is it?
Our EMG system is made up of small sensors that stick to your skin. The sensors record the electrical activity in your muscles whilst your move or exercise on a bike.

Why is it useful?
From the data we collect using this system we are able to understand at which point specific muscles are being activated. This is the next level of bike fitting to see how your muscles react at different points.

What will it allow me to take away from the session?
From this session, you will understand if you could improve your pedalling efficiency by increasing the activation of specific muscles at specific points in a pedal revolution.

Equipment check: the idmatch bike

What is it?
The idmatch bike is one of the key components of the most advanced data driven bike fitting system available.

What it does?
The bike is a positioning jig that can be adjusted while you pedal, and that’s just the start. It uses 3D scanning to precisely measure your body and limb lengths, and employs markerless tracking to follow your movement as you pedal on the jig. It’s able to adjust automatically to what it calculates is the optimum position for you, or it can be controlled manually, and it understands the different requirements of every type of riding. You can also start from the position of your current bike, which can be measured using the Set-Up System and imported into the system.

Why is it useful?
Using the idmatch system we can optimise your position to give you more comfort, efficiency, power and greater endurance.

What will I take away from the session?

From your bike fit session you will have a bespoke report you are able to apply to the positioning on any bike. You will also leave with a list of components available on the market that are optimised for your fit. idmatch’s database can be used to access an extensive library of bikes to pinpoint the right bike and set up based on your fitting data

Let’s take a closer look at some of the tools at our disposal in the Physiology Studio: The ‘Metalyzer’

**What is it?**
A small but powerful piece of equipment which analyses the air you breathe in and out, connecting you to the machine via a mask.
**What it does?**
Measures and records respiratory data from you whilst you undertake your chosen assessment (for example Vo2 max).

**Why is it useful?**
We can use the data collected to identify your fitness levels and training zones based on your own physiology.

**What will it allow me to take away from the session?**
The Metalyzer is connected to a powerful piece of software to dive deep into your data. From the data we collect in your session you will have a comprehensive report outlining the way your body responds to exercise and how you can use this information to inform your training and exercise.

What's involved in a bike fit? We invited Vires Velo rider to the studio to experience the idmatch system to help determine the optimum spec of his new bike. You can watch a video on Ed's experience by visiting the link in our bio now.

The system takes a series of 3d scans to capture your body measurements which are then cross-referenced against thousands of data points to start working out your ideal position. This is before you've even turned a pedal.

Working with our bike fitter you will then run through a thorough fit to try out different positions and make tweaks on the fully adjustable jig. The result is a report that can tell precisely what make, model and size of frame you will need, what bar width and stem length and crucially, the coordinates and measurements needed to plot this onto your bike. This could be onto your existing bike, or in Ed's case a new bike, meaning it is perfect from the start.

Part 2: The Performance Assessment

Next up, Gareth went through a performance assessment which included a series of resting measures and a VO2 Max test. The assessment is invaluable for a cyclist like Gareth to gain a better understanding of his own physiology, how to fuel and how to train effectively.

"I left Vires Velo a more knowledgeable rider. That is what this experience is all about. Education is the first step to making positive changes."

We invited Gareth Winter to the studio to experience a bike fit and Performance Assessment.

"This process was brilliant. The idmatch smart bike adjusts as you ride, making small changes and quickly comparing positions — which is much easier than jumping on and off a road bike on a turbo trainer to fettle with an Allen key. I am no stranger to these bike fit jigs and the 3D body scanning is what makes the idmatch a cut above."
