Aikido is based on traditional Japanese martial arts founded by Morehei Ueshiba in the mid 20th Century. Ueshiba was recognised as the greatest living martial artist in Japan during his lifetime. Aikido blends with rather than clashes with the energy of the attacker and is most effective when applied without strength but with full co-ordination of the mind and body. Great session with Joel and his students at Santa Cruz. Lots to think about. Joel trains in a white belt and forgoes the term sensei despite his many years of training aikido in Japan and France. He has a strong focus on flexibility and not using strength, although the finish of his movements often feel quite physical. I’m also a believer in not using strength so it was quite an eye opener to hear them describe me as very strong. On the one hand quite a compliment for someone my age, but on the other a cause for deeper reflection.
