Something I love having conversations about is how much partner dancing has evolved, and where its going next.
Not that long ago, many dance scenes had in place very rigid social rules. Men led. Women followed. Men asked women to dance. Certain behaviours were expected and anyone who didn't fit neatly into those expectations could find themselves feeling unwelcome or even excluded.
Thankfully, many of our communities have moved beyond that.
Today, people can choose the role they want to dance. Anyone can ask anyone to dance. We have more freedom, more expression and more opportunity for enjoying beautiful dance connections than ever before.
And that's something worth celebrating.
BUT - with greater freedom comes a responsibility to think about the culture we're creating.
A welcoming and inclusive dance community isn't built by the quality of the dancing or how many viral videos come out of it. It's built by the small choices we make when we interact with each other - every class, every event and even every dance.
It's asking someone to dance who has been sitting out for a while instead of immediately grabbing the nearest experienced dancer.
It's encouraging beginners and helping them feel like they belong from their very first class.
It's remembering that social dancing is about sharing a dance with another person, not performing for the people watching from the side.
It's staying present with your partner rather than scanning the room looking for the next dance before the current one has even finished.
It's recognising that every person in the room deserves the same respect, whether they've been dancing for ten years or ten minutes.
The truth is that culture flows from the top.
Teachers, organisers, DJs and experienced dancers set the tone for the entire community. When those who run the scene embody generosity, humility and inclusion, those values naturally filter down. When they don't, we often end up with cliques, beginners feeling invisible, and a community that slowly becomes less welcoming than it could be.
(A little shout out here to Gabor Kiss - I've never seen a teacher who does a better job blending class content with teaching dance ettitquete š)
The good news is that creating a better dance culture doesn't require grand gestures.
It starts with a smile.
An invitation.
A willingness to connect.
Long after we forget the combinations we learnt or the songs we enjoyed, we'll remember how the community made us feel.
And in my opinion - keeping that in mind is the most important piece of dance etiquette there is.
Have a great day and see you on the dancefloor š„°

Hey! hope you're having a great day - heres a litte thought dump - feel free to let me know your thoughts!
Teaching dancing as I do, I think a lot about the balance between getting it *right* and simply enjoying the dance.
Lately, Iāve noticed more and more dancers - especially those early on in their journey - seem to be putting a huge amount of pressure on themselves. Trying to catch every beat, hit every instrument, respond to every musical detail⦠all while still figuring out their basic steps and Itās a lot!
It starts to feel less like I'm watching dancing and more like I'm watching people performing a task.
Donāt get me wrong - the level of musicality in the scene right now is incredible. Dancers are exploring music in creative, expressive ways that weāve never really seen before, and thatās something to celebrate. But I do sometimes wonder if in pushing the ceiling higher, weāre also raising the floor a little too quickly - turning the dance scene into something less welcomng and inaccessible to would be dancers.
A lot of this comes from teachers of course and I know I have a tendency to fall into this trope. The way we dance, the way we talk about music, the way we talk about understanding the music/ figuring out the structure etc etc - it all shapes the student's experience and what they undersatnd as 'right', 'correct' etc.
If everything we demonstrate is layered, complex, and hyper-detailed, itās easy for beginners to feel like they need to do the same just to fit in.
But whether we're dancing salsa, bachata or any other social dance, it can be simple and still feel amazing.
Thereās something really special about just letting a song play and feeling the rhythm, sitting comfortably in your basic, maybe playing with the instruments when it feels natural - not because you 'should', but because you 'can'. That kind of freedom is where a lot of people fall in love with dancing in the first place.
Its important for us as a community, to keep making space for that.
To remind newer dancers that itās about having fun and not about he most complex moves or to catch every single accent or drop in the music.
That musicality isnāt about ticking boxes- itās about listening, feeling, and responding in your own time.
And to remind ourselves, as teachers and more experienced dancers, that modelling joy and simplicity is just as important as modelling skill.
Competitions, Jack & Jills, and social media have their place - they can inspire, challenge, and push the art form forward. But theyāre only one part of the picture.
At the end of the day, most people walk into a dance class or a social because they want to move, connect with other people, and enjoy the music.
It would be a shame to lose that.
Every now and then, lets make an effort to come back to the basics - not as a limitation, but as a choice. A place to breathe, to listen, and to remember why we started dancing in the first place.
Have a great day!
