Should we throw the scales away, or do we just need to stop letting the number control how we feel?

For years, I’ve told women to throw the scales away. And honestly, I had good reason.

Your weight can fluctuate because of your period, hormones, water retention, salty food, stress, sleep, digestion or simply what time of day you weigh yourself. You can become stronger, lose inches and completely change your body shape without seeing a dramatic change on the scales.

The problem is that one number can ruin someone’s entire day. You wake up feeling good, your clothes fit better and you’ve trained brilliantly… then you step on the scales, don’t like the number and suddenly decide you’ve failed.

But are the scales actually the problem?

Maybe they’re simply one way of collecting information. We don’t get emotionally attached to the number on a tape measure or the weight written on a dumbbell, so why do we allow the scales to decide whether we should feel proud of ourselves?

For some people, weighing themselves can be useful. It can show a general trend and help them stay accountable. For others, it becomes obsessive and completely overshadows every other bit of progress they’re making.

So perhaps the answer isn’t that everyone should throw their scales away. Maybe we need to learn how to use them without giving that number the power to determine our mood, confidence or self-worth.

The scales can tell you your relationship with gravity. They cannot tell you how strong you are, how much fitter you feel, how confidently you walked into the gym or how much your mindset has changed.

So, what do you think: should we throw the scales away completely, or do we just need to become less emotionally attached to the number?

You can change your body and still feel exactly the same about yourself.👀

That’s why mindset has always been a huge part of what we do at Pretty Heavy Lifters.✨

As PHL approaches its 11th year, I’ve been reflecting on why I started it. My mission was never just to help women lose weight or look different.🩷

I wanted to help women recognise their worth, believe in themselves and become confident and unapologetic.🎉

That’s why I include coaching points in our sessions. We train hard and work towards physical goals, but we also challenge negative thoughts and work on the way we speak to ourselves.💪🏻

Because if you don’t work on your mindset, it doesn’t matter how much you change your body. You’ll still find something to criticise. (You know it’s true!) 👀

Sometimes positive posts from smaller creators get lost among celebrity news and drama, but I’m going to keep showing up and spreading this message. If it helps even one woman see herself differently, it’s worth it.

And if you’ve been watching PHL for a while, wondering whether you’re good enough to start… you are!! 🩷

What’s one thing you’re learning to appreciate about yourself?

Week one of The Art of Strength was a huge success! 🩷

The Art of Strength is a four week creative project bringing women together to explore what strength really means. Across the four weeks, we’ll be using movement, Box Fit, dance, mobility, meditation, strength training, group discussions and personal storytelling to build confidence, resilience and connection.

The whole journey is also being filmed as a documentary, capturing the women’s experiences, their individual stories and how they progress throughout the project. I can’t wait to see their confidence grow and bring all of their voices together on screen.

A massive thank you to every woman who came along, opened up and threw herself into the first session, and to Ashfield Creates, Inspired Personal Training and Hannah Johnson working behind the scenes to help bring this project to life.

What an incredible start. Bring on week two! 💪🎥✨

We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone to The Art of Strength later 🩷

You should have received an email from Ashfield Creates with the details, but if you haven’t, here’s everything you need to know.

📍 Inspired Personal Training Studio
27 Lime Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield

⏰ 6pm–7:30pm

🚗 You can park nearby at B&M or on Hodgkinson Street. There may also be a few spaces closer to the studio, but Lime Street is quite a tight road.

Across the weeks we’ll be exploring different ways we can experience strength through Box Fit, meditation, mobility, dance and strength training.

There’s no pressure and nothing to prove. The whole idea is to come along, try something different, move your body, connect with other women and hopefully leave feeling a little stronger and more confident each week.

Wear something comfy that you’re happy to move in and bring some water.

Can’t wait to meet you all properly later and get started 🩷🫶🏽

POV: Penny told the PHL girls to bring ANYTHING but a water bottle… and this got out of hand fast 😂😭

Some of these are absolutely hilarious!

Which one wins?! 👀👇🏼
And what would YOU have brought? 😂

🩷 AUGUST MEMBER OF THE MONTH - CAROL 🩷

Our August Member of the Month is the absolutely amazing Carol 🎉

Carol is honestly such an inspiration. Her dedication to both her training at PHL and her running has been second to none.

Since first walking through the doors at Pretty Heavy Lifters, she has gone from strength to strength in every single aspect of her fitness. She’s stronger, fitter, more confident in what her body can do and she just keeps pushing herself to the next challenge. 💪🏼

And she’s certainly got some challenges coming up… Carol will be taking part in the Mansfield 10K AND she’s currently training for a half marathon in October! 🏃🏼‍♀️🔥

What I love most is how consistent she is. She puts the work in, gets her training done and keeps showing up, whether that’s for her running or at PHL.

She’s also just a genuinely fantastic asset to our PHL community and we absolutely love having her as part of it. 🩷

Carol, you should be ridiculously proud of yourself. We definitely are.

Congratulations, our August Member of the Month! 🏆🩷

Bank Holiday Monday spent in the studio with Watko at Mansfield 103.2 🎙️🩷

And today’s reminder… September is the new January. 👀🔥

It’s such a good time to reset, set yourself some goals and give yourself something exciting to work towards before the end of the year.

You do NOT need to wait until January to start making changes.

So… what do you want to achieve this September? 👀

We chatted all about goal setting in the studio today, so if you missed it, have a watch on YouTube using the link below 👇🏼🎥

There’s something very satisfying about putting the gloves on, turning the music up and absolutely smashing a boxing session with a room full of women 😂🥊🩷

You don’t have to love the gym. You don’t have to be super fit. You just need to find something that makes you WANT to turn up.

That’s what we’re about at PHL. Getting stronger, fitter, more confident and having a bloody good laugh while we do it.

🥊 Box Fit every Monday and Saturday.

If you’ve been thinking about starting, this is your sign 👀

Asked the PHL girls one simple question…

“What’s the most unhinged thing you’ve ever done at PHL?” 😭😂🩷

And I genuinely don’t know what I expected?

The things that happen inside these four walls need STUDYING 🤣💀

What’s YOUR most unhinged PHL moment? 👀👇🏽
