‼️Blue Green Algae – Old Trout Lake‼️
Our latest routine water quality sample has identified elevated levels of naturally occurring blue-green algae in Old Trout Lake.
As a precaution, warning signs will be installed in line with environmental guidance. Please do not enter the water, and keep dogs away from the lake, as blue-green algae can be harmful to both people and animals.
🏊 A reminder that swimming is only permitted during the organised open water swimming sessions on West Lake with Whole Health (Nottingham City Open Water Swimming Centre - Colwick Country Park). These sessions operate under controlled conditions with regular water quality monitoring. Swimming elsewhere within Colwick Country Park is not permitted.
Thank you for your cooperation while we continue to monitor the lakes.

It's that time of year again when we'll be carrying out our hydroacoustic fish surveys along the River Trent 🐟
To collect the best data possible, surveys are carried out at night by boat 🚤
While we always do our best to avoid disturbing anglers, please be aware that we will be working on the river on the following dates:
Monday 17th August - Colwick to the Leen
Tuesday 18th August - Stoke Lock to Gunthorpe
Wednesday 19th August - Gunthorpe to Hazelford
Monday 24th August - Hazelford to Averham
Tuesday 25th August - Nether Lock to Cromwell
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation while these surveys are being undertaken.

☀️ Today is going to be another hot day, and while most people will enjoy the weather responsibly, we're asking everyone to think twice before lighting fires outdoors.
During the first week of the summer holidays, deliberate outdoor fires more than doubled in Nottinghamshire compared to the same period last year. In hot, dry conditions, even a small fire can quickly spread and put people, wildlife and property at risk.
We ask that whatever you do, you do it safely, and that your children know the consequences of setting fires deliberately.

A stark reminder from a beautiful site just across the road from Colwick Country Park.
This is exactly why BBQs and open fires are not permitted Nottingham City Council - Parks and Open Spaces. 🚫
This is the aftermath of a fire in Colwick Woods. A large area of grassland has been destroyed, putting wildlife, habitats and the woodland itself at risk.
We are asking everyone who visits the woods to be extra vigilant over the coming days and weeks.
If you see smoke, flames, or anyone deliberately lighting fires, please call 999 immediately. A quick response can make all the difference in preventing a small fire from becoming a major incident.
Please also help by:
Taking all litter home, especially glass bottles, which can contribute to fires in dry conditions.
Disposing of ci******es safely.
Reporting anything suspicious to the appropriate authorities.
Sharing this post so more people are aware.
Protecting Colwick Woods is a community effort. We all have a role to play in looking after this special place for its wildlife and for future generations.
Thank you to everyone who helps keep our woods safe

🚨 Lifebuoys are NOT a toy. They are there to SAVE LIVES. 🚨
Our Rangers are becoming increasingly frustrated by the misuse and vandalism of lifebuoy stations around Colwick Country Park.
Please remember:
🔸 Swimming is NOT permitted, unless it forms part of an organised session operated by our friends at Whole Health, where appropriate safety measures and lifeguards are in place.
🔸 Lifebuoys are emergency lifesaving equipment. They are there to help someone in genuine difficulty in the water. Every time one is removed, thrown into the lake or tampered with, it could delay a rescue and potentially cost someone their life.
Whilst our Rangers do their best to monitor the park alongside their many daily duties across the wider park and marina, we cannot be everywhere at once.
If you witness anyone misusing lifesaving equipment or engaging in anti-social behaviour, please report it to Nottinghamshire Police by calling 101, or online using the link:

Thank you to the vast majority of visitors who respect the park, and the safety equipment provided for everyone. Your support is greatly appreciated. 💚🌿

We have issued a warning about the dangers of swimming in open water after a large group of people were seen jumping into the River Trent.
Officers attended Beeston Weir around 7pm on Wednesday (8 July) where around 30 people had gathered on both banks of the river.
With another period of hot weather expected to last over the weekend and into next week, we are urging people to heed warnings and stay out of the water.
Almost half of accidental drownings happen in the warmer months and often involve people who take a spur-of-the-moment decision to enter the water.
Dangers posed by open water include very cold temperatures, even in heatwave conditions, strong underwater currents, unexpected water depths and other hazards such as debris, weeds, pumps and mechanical equipment.
Inspector Usha Madaraa said: "It’s going to remain hot and sunny this week and people will obviously want to be out and about enjoying the summer.
"They will also want to keep cool, but going into open water is not a safe way to do this and puts yourself and other people's lives at risk.
“The Trent and other rivers and canals around Nottinghamshire may look incredibly enticing but you won’t know the dangers that lurk beneath the surface.
"We intend to increase patrols close to the weir and in other locations in Nottinghamshire, but we cannot be everywhere.
“There are no lifeguards, you don’t know how deep it is, or what’s in the water.
“You could get tangled up in the weeds, land on a discarded shopping trolley, and hurt yourself.
“Even with the hot weather, the water could still be cold causing you to go into cold water shock.
“No matter how strong of a swimmer you believe you are, or if your mates are jumping in, or you’re following a trend on TikTok and egging each other on – remember the dangers.
“Please enjoy the good weather but don’t go jumping or swimming in open water, it’s really not worth the risk.”

☀️ Throughout the summer we know that many of you will be making the most of the warmer weather.
Every day we receive hundreds of calls about various issues, so we have a few bits of advice to help you keep yourself and others safe:
🏊 Water Safety – be aware that water can be extremely cold and hide strong currents or hazards. If someone gets into difficulty, do not enter the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service.
🪟 Window Safety – use windows that are out of a child’s reach and not near any furniture that can be climbed on. Remember to check that they are locked before you leave home or go to bed.
🐕 Dogs in hot cars – if you see a dog in a car in distress (such as heavy panting, drooling or collapsed) dial 999 and ask for the police. Do not smash the window, this could be classed as committing criminal damage and could risk injury for you and the dog.
For more information and advice, please visit our website: https://orlo.uk/nJGEm
📞As always, remember to dial 999 in the event of an emergency.
