Tonight, a member came back into the gym to rescue a forgotten water bottle.
He was halfway out the door again when he stopped, turned around and said:
“Caitlin, you ask us all every day if we’re okay, but I just thought I’d ask - are you okay?”
It really took me aback.
Not because I’m not okay. But because it reminded me how powerful such a small question can be.
Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.
And while there are important conversations to be had about mental health, su***de and the support available, sometimes looking out for each other starts with something incredibly simple.
“Are you okay?”
And then actually making the time to hear the answer.
At FORTIS, we ask people how they are every day. We notice when someone hasn’t been in for a while. We know when someone’s had a rubbish week. We celebrate the good stuff and, hopefully, make a little room for the difficult stuff too.
Tonight, someone did the same for me.
A gym might be the reason people initially walk through our doors.
But the community we build around them is so much bigger than that.
Check in on your people.
And don’t forget to check in on the ones who usually do the checking.
