STRIKE RATE - and the current obsession with it at junior county level.
Over the past year or so I’ve heard the same story many times over - from high quality county youth and Academy players (and their parents) - being told that their “strike rate isn’t high enough” - they aren’t scoring quickly enough.
This, irrespective of whether they won the game, did it on a tricky pitch or against good opposition.
And it’s concerning - big lads who can hit a long ball are being selected over the more technically adept but smaller ones. Perhaps the smaller lad then gets lost to another sport where he does get picked and does play.
But why the fixation with youth “strike rates” now? Has “Bazball” filtered down through the system or some young coaches been gorging on too much T20?
Player development takes time and patience - from players, parents, coaches and support staff.
When Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan developed their batting as youngsters it was not with focus, mention or obsession with having huge strike rates.
It was done by both of them hitting thousands of balls on a bowling machine at Finchley Indoor School where they honed their defensive and attacking skills and grew in confidence.
Their strike rates in white ball cricket developed naturally as they got older and played with and against more experienced cricketers. They added a power game when their fundamentals were firmly in place.
Batting is about being effective - winning matches, overcoming challenges. Finding a way.
Virat Kohli is widely regarded as one of the best One Day batsmen of all time - especially under the pressure of chasing a score.
His consistency has come from making calculated, sensible, often low-risk decisions to overcome testing opposition and conditions.
Striking at a high rate to entertain or because it’s en vogue often loses more matches than it wins.
There’s a time and a format for high-risk play and those who do it well in world cricket have well-established techniques at their core. Their risk- taking too very often cleverly calculated.
Let’s be patient with young players and fit the flashy alloys once the strong chassis is in place
