Unfortunately, due to picnic spot restrictions at Henley Royal Regatta, we are unable to host our annual Boat Club picnic in Lion Meadows on Saturday 14th August, to coincide with the Oriel Alumni weekend. We would love to host everyone to see the excellent rennovations to the boathouse, generously funded by a donation from Chris Mahoney, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there

Oriel College Boat Club is seeking to appoint a head coach for the men’s senior squad. Oriel has been very successful over the previous few years with our first eight now holding both Torpids and Summer Eights headships. Oriel currently holds the most Torpids and Summer VIIIs headships. Our M2 are now the highest placed 2nd Eight in Summer Eights competing in Division 2 against other college’s first boats. We are based on the Isis in Oxford, and at Wallingford Rowing Club. The season is based around the intercollegiate bumps races in early March and June, with entry to appropriate external regattas.

The successful applicant would lead the training programme of the men’s squad, specifically our M1 and M2 boats, throughout the year on and off the water. This includes a wide range of abilities from complete novices through to Blue Boat athletes. There is the possibility to coach the whole men’s squad – including the novice programme – if an applicant is interested in this.

Time requirements are during term time, and a few weeks outside of term time. During the week, the coach will need to be free several mornings per week (5am – 8am) and for 4-5 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. This will probably shift to afternoon/evenings in the April-June period, but all times are negotiable. To begin in October 2019.

Essential Criteria:
- Experience of coaching at a competitive level
- Experience of designing and enforcing training plans
- Organisational and planning skills
- Able to communicate effectively

Desirable Criteria:
- Ability to coach novice rowers
- Clean driving licence and car

Applications close on 11th July, and interviews will take place by 29th July. To apply, please send your CV, including references and coaching history, to [email protected].

Don’t worry, just when you thought everything was going wrong OCBC is here to calm the fears on what would have been the mid point of our training week! Oriel rowers have been out in force over vac and as always we are hunting headships despite not knowing when they will be on offer - here are a few highlights of our Vac training!

The Oriel is back on the water with a novice and senior men’s outing tearing up the Isis today.

2020/21 Season - here we come (come what may).

Today we are looking back at Hilary term this year. It all started off well with blue flag conditions during pre term training camp...but that didnt last long. The river was soon flooded again and the only rowing in the two weeks before Quintin head came with a quick outing in the dark the night before.

After gaining some race experience....storms three weekends in a row slowly put an end to any hopes of Torpids.

And then Tug of Warpids came, and after having the most crews entered (5!), 2 made it to the same semifinals and then Oriel A won!

On the university side, Jan Ole Ernst and Matt Hamilton won the lightweight boat race with OUL as one of the final races before the lockdown hit.

Day 1 of Virtual Eights 2020 begins as most bumps campaigns usually do - with bad kit day!

Throughout the next few days we have several events planned for OCBC and alumni are encouraged to join in - especially with the OCBC Bumps Quiz on Saturday night. The provost and incoming captains will be present!

We would also love to have photos and videos from previous Eights campaigns - please send any to [email protected] with details you'd be happy to share!

On the second day of Virtual Eights Week, although we may not all be in Oxford, OCBC training hasn’t stopped!

Here’s a selection of Oriel training pictures from the last few weeks - whether it's people going out for socially distanced bikes/runs, group Zoom workouts, make-do weights sessions, roller-skiing or (for the lucky few) a sculling session! (Wait for it on the 3rd post...)

On what would have been the start of Summer VIIIs week we're looking back on this year and previous eights - starting with Michaelmas term!

The term started with the annual freshers BBQ to introduce the new freshers to OCBC.
Training then began in ernest for seniors and novices alike, both on and off the water! The rain soon came but not to be deterred we found new ways to train and keep morale high.

Soon Wyndhams came around in a new flooded format with novices and alumni all getting involved!
The novices were all involved in indoor erg regattas to test their terms training at the end of term.

Next a trip to London for Tortoise club dinner reminded everyone about the reasons to keep training hard wherever possible. And as is fast becoming tradition, we sent two crews to Cambridge again to compete in Fairbairns at the end of Michaelmas. Coming away with very respectable results with the limited water time offered.

After all of that it was time for Christmas and a vac of training...

It’s been an amazing decade for Oriel Boat Club. In the last 10 years Oriel have won 10 headships, more than any other college. The 10s mark the fifth consecutive decade that Oriel have won more headships than any other college.

Here’s to the next 50 years.

Head Coaches at Oriel College 2021-22
Applications are now open for two head coaches (men’s and women’s) for the senior squads at Oriel College Boat Club. Oriel has a record of success both past and present, with more headships than any other college and currently holding both the men’s Torpids and Eights headships. Oriel’s women are ranked 3rd on the river in Torpids, and are looking for a head coach who can lead them to headship once again.
The successful applicant would lead the training programme of the men’s or women’s squad, focussing on the 1st and 2nd VIIIs, throughout the year both on and off the water. This includes a wide range of abilities from novices through to Blue Boat athletes.
We are based on the Isis in Oxford and at Wallingford Rowing Club. The season is based around the intercollegiate bumps races in early March and June, and we will also look to be competitive at some external races. During termtime, the coach will need to be free several mornings per week (5am – 8am) and for 4-5 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. This will probably shift to afternoon/evenings in the April-June period, but all times are negotiable. Both roles are to begin in October 2021

Essential Criteria:
- Experience of coaching at a competitive level
- Experience of designing and executing training plans
- Organisational skills and flexibility
- Able to communicate effectively

Desirable Criteria:
- Experience coaching novice rowers
- British Rowing (or equivalent) coaching qualifications
- Clean driving licence and car

Applications close on 31st July, and interviews will take place shortly afterwards.
