OHBC Oxford to London, organized by Jennifer Holmes 21/09/2021

After our cracking week of bumps we are back and looking for a bigger challenge!

What is the challenge you ask?

*OHBC ARE ROWING TO LONDON!*

Yes, you read that right: In November everyone’s favourite boathouse-less, tub-rowing, bucket hatted medic boat club will be taking on a mammoth 3 day 170km row to London. We'll be expecting to row for at least 10 hours each day to make this happen.

We’re doing this to for a few reasons. First and foremost we are partnered with the Tingewick Charity and will be splitting all the funds raised between the boat club and the charity. The funds that do go to OHBC will hopefully allow us to buy a new boat! We’d also be lying if we said we weren’t interested in completing the challenge and hopefully finishing with the fastest time of any of the oxford boat clubs who have previously attempted the 170km row!

We’d be delighted if you could sponsor us for any amount; the boat club has been so important to so many medical students throughout the difficulties of the last year, and it would mean the world if we could ensure that the boat club is maintained to provide future generations of medical students with the same opportunity. To donate please follow this link to help us reach our £10,000 goal: https://gofund.me/0b8a3f6b

For those of you who dont know, Tingewick is a charitable organisation run by Oxford medical students. This year, Tingewick has chosen to support The Oxford Hospitals Charity and Calon Hearts.

Calon Hearts is a charity close to many of our hearts. Calon aims to improve accessibility to life-saving defibrillators and provide CPR training for people throughout Wales. In turn, this will help improve the out of hospital cardiac arrest outcomes - currently less than 1 in 10 people survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest in the uk. They are also the chosen charity of the family of Issie Mogg - our much loved and greatly missed friend, who passed away of an undiagnosed heart condition in 2018 during her first year of medical school.

Back with some more committee intros! Introducing Heather, our other social sec for this year and (when not injured) senior rower! Learning to row at her college catz, the last time she actually rowed was in Cambridge 🤮 A definite love hate relationship with the sport, Heather is excited to be able to have a flexible yet fun season with Osler! Plugging in the morning miles with Osler house, she is especially looking forwards to getting to know some new medics, for example in older years and (hopefully) the huge team breakfasts to come 🥞 Together with Govind, she is also hoping to organise some fun events, COVID-19, permitting- if anyone has any fun social ideas they’d like us to plan get in touch!!

We can count on this gal! 💷💷💷OHBC’s treasurer for the upcoming season is Caitlin, a 4th year from Exeter 🎉 Caitlin is excited to be involved with the resurrection of the club ‘because it’s not something you get to be involved with all the time’, and is also excited about how Osler will allow us all to get to know other medics across years! 🔬💊💉 Having started rowing in her first year, this strong strokesider💪 is also helping us with fundraising to help get the club moving (and bumping!) again💕

Introducing Govind, one of our new social secs!! Although he only has 1 term of rowing experience under his belt 😮, Gov has had plenty of experience fundraising over the last several years and is currently the captain of his college volleyball team!!! ⚽🏀🏈 Despite being more likely to see him at the pub than on the river 🍺 Gov is extremely excited to contribute to the OHBC re-build with the rest of the wonderful committee! ❤️ When asked what he’s most excited about, he replied, “being asleep at 6am 😴 but also contributing towards an active and welcoming community" 🙌 Stay tuned to meet the rest of our wonderful committee!! 🚣‍♀🚣‍♀🚣‍♀

Introducing Rosie, our women’s vice captain for this year! 😍Despite having only rowed 5 times on the water so far (2020 has been an interesting year for rowing...😢) Rosie brings ridiculously big watts💲and passion to the team!💯 Always a sporty gal having previously completed in cross country at county level and national level gymnastics,🤸🏻‍♀️not only is Rosie excited to actually row this year, but also to get new people involved! If you’re a clinical medic and keen to row this year drop us a message!! 😊

Say hello to Jack, our senior advisor and the key to our revival- we genuinely don’t know what we’d do without this superstar! Working behind the scenes, Jack has been re-finding boats, blades and bank accounts, teaching us about the exciting history of Osler rowing and making sure the club is ready to row. First learning to row at Worcester, Jack has an impressive rowing, coaching AND coxing portfolio, rowing the Boston marathon, coaching since their 3rd term and coxing in summer 8s. Jack is most excited about ‘the sheer number of amazing rowers’ signed up to Osler so far 💪 (we are excited too!). They have also been repairing our blades in time for our upcoming restart very soon!! 😁 The blades look incredible! 😍 A big thanks from all of us to Jack 🚣‍♀️🚣‍♀️🚣‍♀️

‘I like rowing not only because it gives me a captive audience of 8 people for my s**t chat, but the sense of community has been really wonderful for staying sane through the last 3 years of medicine!’ Say to hello to Beinn, our co-pres and fab cox! 🤩 Not only bringing his infamous chat, Beinn is ‘good at saying rowing words’ that he’s heard other people use, though we can vouch his coxing abilities are top notch 💪 (not that he’d admit that!) 💯 When he’s not on the river you can find him blowing into tubes (see photos 💨) Beinn is most excited about OHBC’s revival because of the 🤞 fun and welcoming community, helping the clinical medics relax and support each other, whilst having fun! Cough cough the stash too… We can’t wait to get on the water soon and be lead by these two superstars ❤️ - next committee posts coming soon ... 😄😄😄

Introducing Jessie, our co-pres, women’s captain for the coming year and general all-round fantastic human coffee-fueled being!! Learning to row as a fresher, she is now preferably a strokesider but coxes on asthmatic days too (see image 4)! Jessie brings a wealth of experience to the team (as well as the smiliest of faces 😄), previously having rowed for both OUWLRC and her college Keble. She has been instrumental to the OHBC revival 💪 and we couldn’t be more proud of her 😍! When asked why she wanted to bring OHBC back, rowing with pals and taking advantage of clinicals long long terms were mentioned…
Keep posted to meet the rest of the committee in our upcoming posts as we revive OHBC 🤩
