COMMITTEE 2022/23

We’re opening applications for the next OBCMC committee to take us through the upcoming academic year.

The committee strives to grow climbing at Brookes - from those that have never put on a pair of climbing shoes to those who have worn through many.

If you’d like to apply the roles on the committee are as follows, if you are unsure what you could offer to the club, you’re welcome to still apply generally. If you would like to shadow a role to take over in second semester, this can also be applied for:

Apply here:

PRESIDENT

In charge of general day-to-day activity of the club as well as answering any members queries. They will be the face of the climbing club, and will need to be inviting and welcoming to all members. It is expected the president is a seasoned climber who can organise and facilitate group activities which are safe and is aware of the possible risks.

VICE PRESIDENT

Assists the president in achieving their role as well as taking responsibility whilst the president is not available.

GEAR SECRETARY

The key responsibility is maintaining the OBCMC gear supply and ensuring equipment is arranged and suitable for trips. This person needs to be well organised and liaises with Brookes Sport and the club in safety surrounding the gear.

SOCIAL SECRETARIES

They will be the main organisers of the weekly socials, they will also be a friendly face who is always working to draw new members and grow the club.

TREASURER

Responsible for handling any finances the club has, this may consist of money for trips and claiming back of expenses through Brookes Sport such as fuel and tolls.

EXEC(s) / WELFARE

This is a general role where a position is not clearly defined although those members may be able to provide something which is not encompassed in other roles. They will also be consulted on club business and be able to propose new club activity. Potential specialisms could be in helping with any issues with members, trip knowledge, drivers or anything else which you feel may benefit the club.

PLEASE NOTE – a committee is formed of people who intend to pursue a common goal, i.e. bettering and encouraging climbing at Oxford Brookes, therefore the roles are not strictly defined, and all committee is expected to help each other where needed. Please be aware that some of these roles will take a lot of time and dedication before applying.

If you wish to know more please chat to one of our current committee members or message us on any of the clubs social medias.

DEADLINE TO APPLY CLOSES - Thursday 31st March

UPDATED POST.
Hello!

Was great to see lots of people interested in joining us and having fun at our taster sessions!

Unfortunately this was our last free taster session. As of now, our club sessions will be held every Wednesday! We are currently in talks with Brookes Sport to organise some more sessions throughout the week.

BUT we have some good news regarding club gear! After discussing with the centre we are able to allow people to use our club gear. However, there will be limitations. Gear will be limited to a set number of people each session. This will allow us to start teaching people the ropes!

If you are interested in continuing to climb with us and be part of OBCMC, below is the link which directs you to the online shop where you can pay your Sports Membership Fee for OBCMC.

Each member is required to read and agree with the terms of the Brookes Sport Behavioural Contract and pay their membership fee of £75 before noon on Friday 9th October.

'NO PAY, NO PLAY'

We have had a few questions about the Membership Fee so below are a few of the FAQ’s straight from the Sports Coordinator:
What is the Membership Fee used for? The fee goes directly into OBCMC’s overall budget within Brookes Sport and contributes towards the essential costs of running your club: insurance, facility hire (internal and external), coaching, competition entry, travel to competitions, up to 50% of accommodation costs, affiliation fees, match officials, sports equipment, competition clothing, and any other TEAMBrookes related expenses. Averaged out across semester 1 and 2, the £75 roughly equates to £3 per week (across 23 weeks).
Who has to pay it? Every club member is expected to pay the membership fee. The only exceptions are 2020-21 TEAMBrookes Sports Scholars.
Will there be refunds if there is another lockdown? This is going to be a case-by-case/as it happens conversation based on the impacts felt across TEAMBrookes. If there is another national lockdown which impacts the whole country, then we will potentially reassess the price. If there is a local short-term lockdown then we will not be looking to refund or reduce the cost.
Can the £75 be paid in instalments? This is not something Brookes Sport facilitate on mass. If anyone within your club needs to pay the membership fee in instalments, please have them reach out to Brookes Sport directly and they can have this arranged.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch!

Looking forward to welcoming you!!

Kind Regards,
OBCMC Committee

FAQS:
Do I need previous climbing experience to join?
We are always looking to grow the club so anyone is able to join
whether you are a seasoned OBCMC member or someone who
has never tried climbing before. Come along to our FREE taster
sessions!

Do I need to provide my own Climbing Gear?:
OBCMC owns lots of gear, which has generously been provided
by Brookes, and is available for use by all members.
Unfortunately due to Covid-19 there will be reduced access to
this gear.
If you have your own kit we encourage you to bring this as this
will allow people without kit to be able to try things they haven't
had access to before!

What does the OBCMC Membership include?
OBCMC membership is £75 for the whole year and includes:
Access to over £6K worth of gear (harnesses, bouldering mats,
belays, quickdraws etc)
Come on highly subsidised trips - trips will usually be free or
only include food and accomodation
Be covered by our insurance - your safety is our priority, you’ll be
covered in club sessions and on trips

Covid-19:
Given the current situation, things will run slightly differently
than in the past. The centre will be enforcing Social Distancing.
Currently, the wall only allows a maximum of 34 people in at any
one session. Bouldering will be limited to 18 people and Ropes
only 16 people.

Are there any taster sessions?
Yes come along to our FREE taster sessions on Wednesday 23rd
and 30th of September (first session at 10:15 and second session
at 12:15), where committee members will be at hand to help you
out!

What to do before attending your first session?
Everyone is required to complete a climbing participation waiver
before being allowed into the climbing wall.
We recommend loose sport clothing and socks if you need to
hire shoes from the center
Familiarise yourself with the updated rules and regulations of the
wall due to COVID via the link below: https://www.brookes.ac.uk/brookes-sport/facilities/climbing/

Our only day of dry outdoor climbing, very cool to check out Winspit Quarry, lots of potential and we thankfully didn't have to take shelter in the huge caves!
