Christ Church Boat Club Row in Aid of Fulham Reach Boat Club 15/09/2020

Hi all, it’s no secret that our sport is not particularly diverse and not particularly accessible at times. To do our bit to combat this, on 18 & 19 Sept, 4 House rowers will be rowing the ~180km from Christ Church Boat Club on the Isis in Oxford to Fulham Reach Boat Club in (you guessed it) Fulham, aiming to raise as much money as possible for FRBC. They do some fantastic work around the South East of England to help diversify our sport and give as many people the chance to row, no matter their background or circumstances. All donations will mean the world to us and to FRBC.

Good evening, I’m not sure why the Oxford Blue has omitted the Boat Club response to their article (or suggested I haven’t responded at all: I provided them with this statement last night) but I feel that those concerned deserve to hear the Boat Club response. We sincerely hope to learn from recent events and change our sport for the better.

[EDIT: The Blue article and headline have since been edited to be factually correct and include this statement as of Friday morning]

Christ Church Boat Club unequivocally condemns racism and unjust inequality in all forms. The world is reacting to deep rooted injustices, and the Club stands with those changing the world for the better. Two of our members were directly involved in the incident that occurred at JCR Hustings and we have been recently made aware of further allegations against one of the individuals involving a video and use of some unacceptable language. We condemn their actions in Hustings and have made clear to them that such behaviour will not be tolerated in our Club and community. One of the individuals in question resigned from their committee positions after the hustings incident and neither will be considered for crew selection until we have fully investigated these allegations. In order to ensure we reach the correct and just outcome, this investigation will most likely conclude after college concludes its disciplinary proceedings and we are aware of as much of the information as possible.

Recent events have given us reason to reflect on our Club and on our sport. The reality is that our sport is not nearly diverse enough. We have been liaising with Fulham Reach Boat Club on how we can enter a partnership with them to make lasting change. FRBC is a charity which aims to improve diversity in rowing and access to the sport. We hope to launch this partnership at this year’s Christ Church Regatta, by raising funds for FRBC and, if circumstances allow, opening the regatta up to their novice crews. Christ Church Boat Club is open to diversity and open to change.

Oxford Glossary | Bumps is the name for the inter-college rowing competitions that take place in Hilary and Trinity terms. Their format is as unique as their name: bumps races consist of college crews being lined up one after another a few metres apart in their positions from the prior year. When the canon goes off, the boats have the stretch of river from Donnington Bridge to Folly Bridge to catch up with the boat in front and ‘bump’ that boat with theirs. Upon successfully bumping, the boats then swap positions on the river on the start line the following day. The competition lasts four days, with the aim being to bump on each of the days, winning the honour of blades, and ultimately reach the top position of ‘Head of the River’.

Rowing at college-level is open to anyone, regardless of your experience level and is one of the most widely-participated in sports at Oxford. Find out more about how to get involved with bumps and other college sports on our Sports A-Z here: https://www.sport.ox.ac.uk/sports-a-to-z

After a massive first day of racing our second boats have secured their places in the next division up.

W2 rowing over then bumping and M2 bumping twice so fast that their fans at the boat house have yet to see their raw speed.

W1 and M1 both faced challenging opposition high up in the first division with W1 having to concede to two incredibly strong crews from Keble and Hertford and M1 giving a good chase to Wadham throughout the course with some very close racing at the top end of the division.

Today's racing times are:
1:30 - W2
3:00 - M2
4:30 - W1
5:00 - M1

As always the boat house will be open to everyone to cheer on our boats as they look to wreck havoc to some unsuspecting sterns

Today marks the first day of Torpids 2019 and with unseasonably warm weather like this one there's no doubt we'll have 4 quality days of racing!

This year the house has 4 boats qualified with two near the top of division 1 and two eyeing a move up in divisions.

Todays race times are:
12:30 W2
2:00 M2
4:30 W1
5:00 M1

With W2 looking to row over into division 4 and M2 looking to bump Keble M2 to get into division 3 on day one the house is in a good place to really upset some of our opponents this week.
