We all know that strong core muscles are important for dance, but how do you even get a 4 year old to understand how to activate them?? Let alone use them to support their dance...

Here how ⬇️

Scarf magic trick πŸͺ„ (AIM: Get our miniest dancers to activate their core muscles).

Tell the children you are going to do a magic trick and you need a volunteer...

The volunteer should sit on their knees with arms by their side... The teacher then lays a scarf over their lap and the student folds down into a 'snowball'.

At this stage, their core/tummy is relaxed, so the scarf will feel hard to pull out. πŸ‘Ž

Now ask them to squeeze their tummy button up and in (activating their core). It may take a few goes, but once they have it you will feel that the scarf becomes loose and easy to pull out! You should also see their core muscles activate. πŸ’«

This is the MAGIC πŸͺ„ The student using their core muscles alone to release the scarf 🀩

TIP: Use cues like the following to help them engage the core before pulling the scarf out ⬇️

Imagine a vacuum cleaner sucking up your belly button through your back.

Squeeze your belly button towards the ceiling.

Squeeze your belly button away from the scarf.

Sucking or slurping straw sound effects.

Tickling their back (if the student is happy with this).

We love using fun (and slightly silly) methods to help our miniest dancers learn. 😍

Save this to try yourself. ❀️

Autumn term has well and truly begun! πŸ‚

We are officially back for our second term at Love Dance Academy. 😍

100 students aged 2-12 walked through our doors and we were blown away by their energy, hard work, creativity and incredible dancing! πŸ™Œ We can't believe we have grown to an academy of 100 dancers already! THANK YOU to each and every family for choosing us. ❀️

But what do we actually cover in the first weeks of a new term? ⬇️

Establishing class structure, etiquette and boundaries (this helps students feel at ease and know what to expect). βœ…

Getting to know each other. I ask students about their holidays, their first week of school and more. I encourage them to get to know their peers through partner exercises and games. πŸ‘«

Understanding the space- how we stand in the centre, how to move across the floor in corner work, how we take turns, finding our spaces for routines (spend time getting this in check now and thank me later). 🫢

Technique BASICS (teaching or reminding students of their basic positions of the legs and arms, engagement of the core and correct posture, use for the feet and so on... Once these are engrained, then we can grow). 🌱

Warm up and why it matters (so students actually understand WHY they have to warm up). 🌑️

Strength and conditioning (but make it FUN). An essential aspect of training to establish from day one. πŸ’ͺ

Creative movement. This is a non negotiable for week one. We plan age appropriate creative activities for all students so they can let loose during class. They've likely had A LOT of focus with their first week of a new school year, so give them a moment to just be free with no limits and no rules. 🌈

Careful planning = a successful and smooth start to the term AND happy students πŸ˜πŸ™Œ

Monday Motivation ❀️

This one is a little soppy, but we love it! Dance really is a kind of universal language- one that we can all use to express ourselves ☺️

We love watching our students express themselves through dance in class. From connecting to choreography to expressing themselves in free movement.

Whatever you do this week, make sure you save some time to DANCE. 🫢

Why do we dance?

Because dance is special for a lot of reasons...

Yes, students should learn new skills, improve strength, technique, flexibility, etc.

But that's not it.

They should also be allowed to let loose in class.

To express themselves through movement when the right words don't come.

To practice being creative in a space where there are no limits.

To connect with others and build lasting friendships.

We believe strong technique is a tool for dancers to be able to do all of these things.

Just how a child learning their first words and then how to read and write their own thoughts, ultimately allows them to express themselves through poetry, singing/song writing and story telling...

Teaching children how to control and move their body allows them to express themselves physically. The steps they learn in class don't just look cool or impressive, they are tools for your child to use to communicate without words.

And who knows where that journey might lead them.

We think it's pretty important to remember this. ❀️
