🚗 Looping further around Namibia to our new location - Spitzkoppe where we hiked the tallest mountain
7am start.
Up to 1,280m
Near-vertical scrambling, using chains and more than a few deep breaths
EPIC
But Baboongate has officially been replaced by:
“That time we thought we were going to get murdered in the mountains.” 😂
We’d arranged to meet our guide at a crossroads at 7am
He didn’t show
Another guy appeared, said he knew him, offered to get in our car and direct us to his house
About halfway there my brain caught up:
Excellent travel safety there Rogers 🤦🏼♀️
We eventually found our guide at his home 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
…..then we needed to drive somewhere else to collect his bag
……then he announced he’d drive OUR car to the start of the hike
Errr nope 😅
Anyway we set off 🧗♀️ 🏃🏼♀️
And it continued to feel sketchy
He smelled strongly of alcohol and something chemical. He was making loads of phone calls at various points in the climb
At one point he disappeared for a wee and came back carrying a little bag he said he’d accidentally left on the mountain last time
Then, while explaining that the sap from one of the plants was poisonous, he found a stick, produced a blade and started making himself a walking stick 😭
At this point I started saying my prayers 😂
OBVIOUSLY…
Nobody murdered us
He was probably just a chaotic dude with two tourists who wrote a Netflix true-crime docu in their heads
But there probably is a serious lesson here
Adventure takes you outside your comfort zone
But it’s not about ignoring your gut or handing over control of your safety
Anyway
Spitzkoppe was bloody spectacular
10/10 mountain
2/10 risk assessment 😂
