A client asked me recently:
âWhat do you find harder to stay consistent with, training or nutrition?â
For me, probably nutrition.
I enjoy eating out. Takeaways. Going for food with Emily. Having a few beers after football. And Iâve got no intention of removing those things from my life.
But the question made me realise something more important.
My training and nutrition rarely exist independently of each other.
When Iâm training well, I naturally want to eat better because I want to perform, recover and actually get something back from the work Iâm putting in.
When my nutrition is good, Iâve got more energy, training feels better and performance improves.
One positive behaviour starts influencing the next.
And the opposite can happen just as easily.
Miss a couple of sessions.
Routine starts slipping.
Food choices become less structured.
Weekend comes around and suddenly youâre considerably further away from where you wanted to be than one missed workout should ever have taken you.
Thatâs why I regularly ask clients to identify their keystone habit.
The one behaviour that seems to make everything else easier.
For you, it might be getting Mondayâs training session done.
It might be prepping your meals on Sunday.
It might be hitting your morning walk.
It might even be getting to bed at the right time.
You donât always need to try and improve 10 different things at once.
Sometimes you need to identify the one thing that creates a positive knock-on effect across everything else and protect it.
So ask yourself:
When Iâm having my best weeks, whatâs the one thing I nearly always do?
And when things start going backwards...
Whatâs usually the first thing I stop doing?
Thereâs a good chance youâve just found your catalyst.
