Potentially another life saved today at Hockeyjam 😂

Sharpening your ice hockey skates isn’t just important—it’s fundamental to how well you can skate. It directly affects your grip, speed, balance, and even safety.

Here’s why it matters:

🧊 1. Edge control = everything

A proper sharpening creates two clean edges on each blade. These edges let you:
• Turn sharply
• Stop quickly
• Accelerate explosively

If your skates are dull, you’ll feel like you’re slipping or sliding—especially when trying to stop or change direction.

⚡ 2. Performance boost

Good sharpening helps you:
• Push harder without losing traction
• Glide more efficiently
• Maintain stability at higher speeds

Even small differences in sharpness can noticeably affect your skating.

🛑 3. Safety

Dull blades increase the risk of:
• Falling unexpectedly
• Losing control during stops
• Collisions with other players

Sharp edges give you predictable control, which is critical in a fast-paced game.

🔄 4. It’s not one-size-fits-all

Sharpening isn’t just “sharp or dull”—it’s about the hollow (the curve between the edges).
• Deeper hollow = more grip, less glide
• Shallower hollow = more speed, less bite

Your ideal setup depends on your weight, skill level, and playing style.

⏱️ 5. How often should you sharpen?

Typical guideline:
• Recreational players: every 10–20 hours of ice time
• Competitive players: every few sessions or even before games

You should sharpen sooner if you notice:
• Slipping in turns or stops
• Difficulty holding an edge
• Visible nicks in the blade

Bottom line

Skate sharpening is as important to hockey as tyre pressure is to a car—you can play without it being perfect, but you’ll never perform at your best.

If you want, I can help you figure out the best hollow for your size and playing level.
