I was devastated to hear of the death of my close friend Charlie Murray at the weekend at the age of 60.
I my Olympic Weightlifting days throughout the late 1979 to 1990s, I was lucky enough to be coached by Charlie’s dad John ( himself a multiple Scottish Champion and international weightlifter) and as a youngster, Charlie would come along and watch me train when I came down to John’s gym in Prestonpans. The inevitable happened when Charlie started training and it very quickly became apparent that, like his dad, he was destined to become an outstanding lifter. He went on to win many Scottish litles and represent Scotland and Britain at international level, breaking countless records along the way.
He was without doubt, one of the naturally strongest men I have ever known.
During this period, I looked upon John as a father to me and Charlie as a brother. We trained together, travelled throughout the UK and abroad to compete at international competitions and a lifelong bond was formed.
I loved them both and feel so very lucky to have known and been part of the Murray family.
RIP Charlie ❀️

Charles Murray
It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of one of Scotland's top weightlifters, Charlie Murray, son of late weightlifting father John and Father of Evan and his family.
Charlie was a miner in his younger days and hailed from Prestonpans in the East of Scotland where he competed for the local Prestonpans weightlifting club.

Charlie was an awesome sight on a weightlifting platform and achieved selection for 3 Commonwealth Games in 1982-1986-1994 and had been to many British championships and winning many Scottish titles in his time in the sport. Not every lifter of today will remember Charlie but their coaches will do with affection and respect as he was always a nice guy to chat with and I’m sure a few stories could be told about his endeavours while he was a lifter.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
All friends that knew Charlie will be welcome to attend his service and as soon as details are known we will pass on the information to you if you wish to go and pay your respect to a great guy.

Saw this photo today on Facebook.
The Pitlochry Sports Dome.
Brought back some great memories. The Club really took off when we started training in the Dome. I think it was in the mid 1980s. Even held a few national competitions there. Always remember that it was really hot in the Summer and freezing in the Winter ( rubber walls were covered in Ice which proceeded to drip on you as it thawed πŸ’§β˜”οΈ). Had a couple of disasters too, when it got damaged in storms and deflated πŸ™„πŸ˜‚
The photos are all taken whilst training in the Dome.
Happy days πŸ‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜

Weightlifting Scotland's statement on all levels of competitions up to National Events, we are aware of the concerns of both clubs and members about competitions.
The wellbeing, health and safety of all our lifters, coaches, volunteers and the general public is a priority for Weightlifting Scotland and we are aware that planned weightlifting competitions have already been cancelled or postponed. At present, our position is to help support an informed view for Clubs to make their own decisions as to whether their competitions should run by looking at the local situation and the planned conditions.
In reaching decisions about competitions and other activities that might be taking place, clubs are encouraged to consider the latest government advice as follows -

There is presently no reason for people to stop doing their daily sport and physical activities as they normally would.
Anyone with a persistent cough and/or a temperature or flu like symptoms should avoid the risk of spreading their infection by following government advice.
For those who offer community and leisure services' hand hygiene should be strongly promoted and encouraged, and equipment and facilities should be thoroughly cleaned and wiped down as usual following use.
For those hosting sporting events, whatever their size, attendees and participants should stay up to date on the government’s latest advice on how to avoid catching or spreading the virus.
Regular communication with local partners, facility operators, travelling athletes and clubs is essential and consideration must be given to those who have concerns about their health. Clubs should be aware that some athletes, coaches, volunteers and spectators may withdraw from competition at the last minute due to changing circumstances or advice. Weightlifting Scotland will continue to work closely with local authorities and partners and will support clubs as decisions around the staging of competition are made.

Finally, please follow all the relevant advice on how to avoid catching or spreading the virus, we would encourage you to look after your health. There is no pressure from Weightlifting Scotland for lifters, coaches, volunteers to attend any organised activity if they feel it will risk their health.

This is an ongoing and fast moving situation and as such any guidance and advice will be subject to further review and recommendations from Authorities.

In the meantime please continue to follow advice and make use of the following online resources for up to date information about Coronavirus:
