To all my Dance Fitness with Lynn participants

I take the health & safety of you all seriously and since the warmer weather is likely to be here for a couple of weeks, here is some Information & tips which may help.

Heat Acclimatisation

Exercising in HOT weather can put extra stress on your body. I would ask you all to hydrate but there's much more that you can do to follow a safe exercise class.

πŸ”₯ Feeling hot hot hot....
Exercise plus air temperature and humidity can increase your core temperature. Your body has to effectively alter its system; vasodilating the skins pores, and sending more blood around the body to aid circulation to cool you down.

πŸ”₯ Acclimatisation:
Your body is currently going through what's known as heat acclimatisation and we, living in the UK, need to accept our body may be struggling and trying to adapt. That's why exercise can feel harder.

Your ability to exercise in hot weather will be dependent on many factors including your weight, metabolism and capacity for heat exchange.

What can you do in Dance Fitness classes?
πŸ’§ Obviously hydration is key but there is more you can do…

1. Timed meals:
Eat light nutritious foods a good 4 hours before class. Don't eat just before class as your body will struggle to digest and exercise concurrently. Additionally you may need to monitor your salt intake. Heat causes excessive perspiration and with that we may lose minerals and salt which needs to be considered. Talk to your GP if you sweat excessively about learning how to replace minerals lost.

2. Hydration
Hydrate throughout the day but particularly before, during and after your class πŸ’§πŸ’§πŸ’₯Not just in your class!!!πŸ’₯

You sleep on average for 6 - 8 hours a day without hydrating, so drink a glass of water in the morning when you wake up. Ideally 1.5 - 2.5 litres of water (6 - 8 glasses a day) should be consumed a day but consider increasing this in hot weather.

πŸ’₯ Be aware alcohol & caffeine can promote dehydration.

πŸ‰Water rich foods such as melon, cucumber & strawberries can contribute to your fluid intake.

3. Clothing
Avoid 100% cotton fabrics which absorb sweat and make you feel heavier and hotter. Instead opt for a lightweight sports t-shirt or vest made from a breathable moisture-wicking fabric which is designed to draw sweat away from the body and is quick drying to aid your body's natural cooling process. Loose fitting clothing allows the air to circulate as opposed to tight clothing which traps heat and sweat, likewise darker colours absorb more heat than lighter colours. Shorts are absolutely fine for class - no need to feel self-conscious, comfort is paramount.

4. Monitor your day.
Do not exert yourself too hard in class, especially if you've been physically active in the day. Lower options are always available.

5. Consider your current health conditions.
Some health conditions do not sense a change in heat and some medications do not react well to heat. So check out your medication.
Conditions such as reduced blood circulation, heart disease, mental illnesses and obesity are also risk factors when it's hot.
Some neurological disorders and respiratory disorders do not like the heat too.

So safe exercise is key.
Consider your current conditions. Think about your health diagnosis and what you can do to maintain your bodies safe temperature.

6. Rest.
Consider your sleep hygiene. Ventilated rooms create a better environment, cool showers before bed a glass of water close by.

7. Don't warm up too quickly
Let your body regulator kick in. Go steady. Don't over exert.

8. Take breaks at ANY stage.
Sit chill, chat and just enjoy the music.

9. Open your windows
Ventilate your space and get a fan.

10. Don't exercise outside in the sun. Stay shaded or go indoors.

11. If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop exercising & rest in a cool area:-
* Dizziness or light-headedness
* Nausea or stomach upset
* Painful muscle cramping
* Headache or extreme fatigue
* Profusely sweating

I hope these tips help you to manage the heat both in & out of class 😊

🚨Just ONE week to go! 🚨

In just seven days, I'll be swapping solid ground for a rope and voluntarily stepping off the side of Plymouth Argyle Football Stand... because apparently this seemed like a good idea at the time! πŸ˜³πŸ§—

I'm doing it all to raise money for St Luke's Hospice Plymouth, an incredible charity that provides compassionate care and support to so many local families when they need it most.

This is my (not so) shameless plea for donations before I take the plunge! Every single pound makes a difference, and honestly, no amount is too small. Whether it's the price of a coffee, a chocolate bar, or the loose change hiding down the back of the sofa, it all adds up.

If you've been meaning to donate but haven't quite got around to it, now's your chance to help make the climb down feel a little more worthwhile!

Thank you so much to everyone who's already supported meβ€”you've helped keep me motivated (and distracted me from thinking too much about the height! πŸ˜…).

Feel free to share this post too. Wish me luck... I have a feeling I'll need it! πŸ’›

What a performance from the Dance Fitness squad tonight.

The warm-up kicked off like the opening whistle... confidence was high, spirits were soaring and then the first main track arrived!

We tackled a brand new routine & I saw some world class footwork. The odd dancer was caught offside with the choreography but we had no drama or own goals but plenty of hydration breaks πŸ’§

No VAR was needed when someone went the wrong way- we saw it but carried on regardless.

The Scoreboard:-
πŸ† Energy used - Plenty
πŸ† Smiles - 100%
πŸ† Team spirit - Champion League standard
πŸ† Co-ordination - Under review but improving each week

A huge well done to everyone who turned up, gave it their all & kept going until the final whistle.

Stay hydrated and get ready for next week when we're going for promotion - well done Team πŸ‘πŸ»
