📣 BREAKING NEWS FROM THE EVENT DIRECTOR’S OFFICE 📣

HE RAN. HE FINISHED. HE STILL FOUND TIME TO MICROMANAGE THE FINISH FUNNEL.

Against all expectations, yesterday’s inaugural trial of Mobile Micromanagement™ has been declared a roaring success.

The Event Director crossed the line in 25:04 — just four seconds outside his pre-event estimate of 25 minutes.

Whether this demonstrates exceptional pacing or simply an overwhelming need to get back to the finish area before somebody did something without consulting him remains under investigation.

More importantly, following concerns raised before the event, the Event Director can confirm that suitable levels of enthusiasm were demonstrated throughout.

Every marshal received an enthusiastic thank you. 👌

The Tail Walker was observed at an appropriate distance. 👀

Course signage remained pointing in broadly the correct direction. ➡️

No funnel duckers were detected during the mobile patrol. 🦆

And, most remarkably of all, the Event Director successfully accepted a finish token without attempting to reorganise the entire token operation himself. 🎟️

Finishing in 25:04 also meant there was plenty of time to resume his natural habitat at the finish funnel: looking unnecessarily concerned, checking that tokens were being handed out sequentially, inspecting the scanners, questioning perfectly competent volunteers and generally ensuring that Abbot’s Wood parkrun was micromanaged to within an inch of its life.

The Run Director was, of course, in complete control throughout.

The Event Director merely remained nearby to ensure they were in complete control correctly.

There were no reported token catastrophes, results were produced without the need for forensic reconstruction and, as far as we are aware, nobody accidentally deleted anything while attempting to buy a coffee.

Frankly, standards are definitely improving.

Following the success of the trial, Mobile Micromanagement™ may now become a regular feature at Abbot’s Wood.

So next time you hear a slightly breathless voice behind you saying “keep left please”, “thank you marshal” or asking whether you remembered your barcode…

…it may not be another parkrunner.

It may be management. 👀

25:04. One finish token taken. Zero funnel ducks. Micromanagement maintained.

📣 A STATEMENT FROM THE EVENT DIRECTOR’S OFFICE 📣

The Office of the Event Director wishes to advise that, in a highly unusual development, the Event Director will actually be running at Abbot’s Wood parkrun tomorrow.

Yes. Running.

Following extensive negotiations with himself, he has agreed to relinquish operational control for approximately 25 minutes and will restrict his official volunteering duties to Pre-event Setup and Post-event Close Down.

However, anyone assuming this means a morning free from Event Director oversight is sadly mistaken.

Running the course provides an exciting new opportunity for mobile micromanagement.

Tomorrow’s runners, joggers and walkers can therefore expect the Event Director to conduct a moving inspection of:

🏃 Appropriate levels of enthusiasm
🌲 Correct navigation around the woodland
👋 Marshal interaction and acknowledgement
🚶 Responsible overtaking and general parkrun etiquette
☕ Whether sufficient urgency is being shown in getting back for coffee

Think of it less as the Event Director “taking part” and more as a 5km roaming quality-assurance audit.

Of course, there is one obvious risk associated with allowing the Event Director to leave the finish area unattended:

🎟️ THE FINISH TOKENS.

Given recent events, the probability of some form of token-related fiasco occurring during his 25-minute absence has been assessed as somewhere between “quite likely” and “almost inevitable.”

The tokens are currently believed to be in the correct order but nobody is prepared to guarantee they will remain that way.

Contingency plans are in place. These largely consist of the Event Director finishing his run, discovering what has happened, staring silently at the token team for several seconds and then reaching for a calculator and an emergency latte.

The Run Director has been informed that they are technically in charge.

The Event Director has also been informed of this but whether he accepts it remains to be seen.

See you tomorrow. 🌳💛

In search of a carpark marshal!

Can anyone lend a hand before parkrun on Saturday with the carpark?

20-30 mins directing lovely parkrunners in the carpark before your run/walk is all it takes.

We’ve ordered the sun and the woods are looking beautiful.

Any takers for the coveted yellow vest?

🌳 A little course update from Abbot’s Wood parkrun… 👟

The woods are starting to get a bit muddy in places, so if you’re joining us over the coming weeks, we’d recommend light trail shoes if you have them.

🍂 Some sections of the course may also be slippery, particularly after rain, so please take a little extra care and run to the conditions.

Nothing too dramatic just yet… but summer is definitely starting to lose its grip! 🌧️🌲

See you in the woods! 💛

‼️ OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM THE EVENT DIRECTOR’S OFFICE ‼️

After careful consideration of the Number Checker’s statement, the Event Director’s Office has conducted a full and impartial investigation into the software designed by the Event Director.

The Event Director is pleased to report that the Event Director has investigated the Event Director and found the Event Director entirely blameless.

The software has also been cleared of all wrongdoing.

☕ THE COFFEE INCIDENT

The investigation established that the system performed perfectly well until the Number Checker decided to switch screens in pursuit of coffee.

The Number Checker claims:

📱 “I only switched screens.”

The software claims nothing, largely because it is a web page and therefore cannot defend itself.

The Event Director considers this deeply unfair on the software.

📜 THE HOME SCREEN DEFENCE

The Number Checker further claims they could not reasonably have known that saving the system to the Home Screen might prevent the issue.

The Event Director accepts this point.

Unfortunately, accepting this point would require admitting there may be a minor flaw in the software.

The point is therefore rejected.

🧑‍⚖️ OUTCOME OF APPEAL

Having carefully considered all available evidence, the Number Checker’s appeal against dismissal has been unsuccessful.

Following publication of their statement, the disciplinary charges have also been expanded to include:

• Abandoning critical parkrun infrastructure in pursuit of coffee.

• Bringing bespoke Event Director software into disrepute.

• Attempting to introduce “facts” into an internal investigation.

• Failing to anticipate an undocumented technical issue they had never been told about.

The last offence is considered particularly serious.

The original allegation that the Number Checker “deleted the lot” will therefore remain permanently on file, although for legal reasons an asterisk will now be added:

“Deleted the lot*”

*Technically may not have deleted the lot.

The Event Director considers the matter closed.

No further statements will be entertained unless submitted through the correct complaints procedure, which is coincidentally hosted on the same web-based system.

Applicants are strongly advised not to switch screens before pressing submit.

🚨 ABBOT’S WOOD pARKRUN – THE GREAT TOKEN PURGE: HEADS ROLL AT THE FINISH FUNNEL 🚨

They’ve gone. Sacked. Dismissed. Their passes revoked and their desks cleared.

Following yesterday’s latest finish-funnel debacle, several key members of the Abbot’s Wood parkrun Finish Token Department (AWpFTD) have been summarily relieved of their duties.

The charge?

Gross misconduct in the distribution of small numbered pieces of plastic and this is not a decision we have taken lightly .... Well ok, it is .. There was an incident. We needed someone to blame. Decisions had to be made.

Naturally, a full, fair and completely impartial investigation followed and what it uncovered was shocking...

THE TOKENS WERE IN THE CORRECT ORDER!! 😳

For once, the tokens had done absolutely nothing wrong.

This immediately ruled out our usual suspects: poor mathematics, bright sunshine, a comprehensive breakfast menu, the 3D-printed dispenser and Orlando, whose Token Sorter for Life status remains intact.

Which meant attention had to turn elsewhere.

And it is with considerable regret that we must place a proportion of the blame on...

YOU! THE RUNNERS!! 🫵

A small number of finishers appear to have overlooked one of parkrun’s simpler traditions - When you cross the finish line and enter the finish funnel, please take a finish token at the end.

Even if you don't have your barcode.

Even if you don't want a result.

Even if you're absolutely certain that declining one tiny piece of plastic couldn't possibly cause chaos behind you.

PLEASE. TAKE. A. TOKEN!!!

When someone doesn't, the beautifully constructed relationship between stopwatch positions, finishers and little plastic numbers begins to unravel.

And we really don't need any help making finish tokens more complicated. We have demonstrated repeatedly that we are perfectly capable of doing that ourselves.

📱 THE NUMBER CHECKER – OUR FOOLPROOF BACKUP PLAN

Fortunately, we had safeguards.

Our Volunteer Coordinator, Hannah, had taken on the esteemed role of Number Checker and could be seen furiously recording finishers’ times, positions and names throughout the event.

This was excellent news! Should anything go wrong, we had an independent record against which the results could be checked.

And something DID go wrong.

So, at the crucial moment, we simply needed to consult this carefully collected information.

The Volunteer Coordinator confidently reached for the data.... and deleted the lot ... All of it ... At precisely the moment it became useful.

This represents an exciting new development in our finish-token saga: creating an excellent backup system and then destroying the backup during the emergency it was specifically designed for.

The subsequent HR investigation was brief.

The Volunteer Coordinator has now been sacked from a role they weren't technically employed to do, while retaining their position as Volunteer Coordinator because we need somebody to recruit replacements for everyone else we've sacked.

🐾 SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY WERE HELPFUL

Fortunately, while our own Finish Token Department descended into yet another governance crisis, we were joined by the wonderful team from Raystede Centre For Animal Welfare who came along to support our event and showcase the fantastic work they do for animals in our local community. 💙🐾

A huge thank you to them for joining us and for their support.

For clarity, no Raystede animals were implicated in the token incident, none have been dismissed, and at the time of publication we have no evidence that any of them refused to take a finish token.

Their conduct was exemplary throughout.

⚖️ ACCOUNTABILITY

Clearly, after several weeks of finish-token incidents, questions will inevitably be asked about whether the Event Director should finally accept some responsibility.

Following a thorough, transparent and completely independent investigation conducted by the Event Director into the performance of the Event Director, we can confirm:

Absolutely not.

The tokens were in order.

The dispenser worked.

Orlando had done his job.

The Event Director therefore considers himself fully exonerated and frankly a victim in all of this.

*No conflict of interest was identified by the Event Director.

📋 CORRECTIVE ACTIONS

Following yesterday's events:

🎟️ Runners are reminded to TAKE A TOKEN when they finish.

📱 Number Checkers are reminded that retaining the numbers they have checked is considered desirable.

🗑️ The Volunteer Coordinator is to receive enhanced training in the difference between SAVE and DELETE.

🏅 Orlando remains Token Sorter for Life.

🐾 Raystede remains the only organisation involved yesterday to emerge from this investigation with its professional reputation completely intact.

👔 Several members of the Finish Token Department have been summarily dismissed.

😇 And the Event Director remains, following his own exhaustive investigation, entirely blameless.

We therefore consider the matter closed.

Again.

Until next Saturday.

When we look forward to discovering an entirely new and innovative way of making the simple process of handing out numbered pieces of plastic far more complicated than anyone ever thought possible. 💚💛

184 participants and 30 volunteers made today happen and what a lovely morning it was too. 115 first timers and 35 PBs too!

8 of today’s participants were first timers ever to parkrun and we hope to see them again soon.

Congratulations to the following people who achieved milestones today:
- first time volunteer - Mikayla Bernstein, Madi Butler, Natalie Collin and Syed Hay
- 10 (volunteer) - Orlando Chin and Ros Daintree
- 10 - Robert Champion
- 25 - Nat Clay
- 50 - Elaine Gower
- 100 - Janine Haynes
- Rachel and Janine’s 100 location

And lastly, a huge thank you to the team from Raystede Centre For Animal Welfare, who gave up their time to volunteer at Abbot’s Wood parkrun this morning!

Raystede does incredible work rescuing rehabilitating and rehoming animals in need. They care for dogs, cats, horses, farm animals, small animals and wildlife. Why not pay them a visit near Ringmer, meet some of the animals, enjoy the café, shop and playpark and support this brilliant local charity?

Every visit helps Raystede continue their vital work.
