Through the wilderness 10/03/2020

We are now progressing through the period of Lent. A time of reflection for many Christians around the globe as we journey towards one of the most important days in the Christian year, Easter or Resurrection Sunday. For some Lent means giving up or fasting from certain foods or activities, most commonly chocolate and social media. For others it is resolving to do something different like reading the Bible more or praying more or looking at the journey to the cross more deeply. [ 1,237 more word ]

Scars…evidence you survived 28/11/2019

Many years ago, before I got married, I had the privilege of meeting a pastor and his wife from Malawi. Francis and Annie were such a breath of fresh air and though our meeting was relatively brief, the impact of the encounter has lasted especially Francis' prayer. His heart seemed to echo God's, that I would one day truly see what God has done in my life. [ 874 more words ]

When the words bounce off the ceiling.. 26/02/2019

When I was very young, possibly 4 or 5 years old, before emigrating, I stayed with my grandparents in their house in Singapore. there was an area between the main living and bedrooms and the kitchen and courtyard. It was an area outside the bathroom and toilet and it was open with a skylight. My grandma would do the washing by hand and then hang them out. [ 992 more words ]

The battle rages on…. 05/02/2019

Over the last few days I have been thinking about the need to be believed. Having seen and talked to the consultant about the various symptoms I have been battling throughout my life without ever really having them all investigated, I started to think about why I had never brought them up before. The answer was very simple..I didn't think I would be believed. [ 942 more words ]

Zebras, donkeys and me. 28/01/2019

Medical students have been taught to think of horses when they hear the sound of hooves not zebras...To be fair I think most people outside of the medical would think of horses too. Living so close to the New Forest, ponies are a familiar sight but so are donkeys...they too have hooves. The last month or so has been a whirlwind of diagnoses, investigations, appointments and more appointments. [ 508 more words ]

Liquid prayers 14/01/2019

Sometimes there are no words....sometimes it's impossible to put words to feelings.. I like Spurgeon's reference to "liquid prayers". I'm sure we have all had those times when we have knelt to pray or in the middle of the chaos and madness of life's sometimes relentless onslaught and all we can do is let the tears fall. I had a moment like that today. [ 727 more words ]

Another new year 07/01/2019

Well, Christmas has come and gone, the new year has been celebrated and now children are back at school and in my husband's words, "the rat race has started again". The last time I wrote, I was feeling somewhat down and contemplative...feeling that the chronic and debilitating pain was never going to end and that answers seemed unreachable. In truth, I was disappointed and perhaps hopeless. [ 340 more words ]

Waiting…It’s so last century, darling! 11/12/2018

Waiting seems a counter culture concept. In an age where messaging and emails are instant, meals require little or no preparation, going from Bournemouth to Glasgow no longer requires the long overnight drives...we can hop on a plane and be there quickly. Even the period of advent is no longer a necessarily a period of waiting for the big day....the run up to Christmas is full of parties, carol services, advent calenders that no longer just contain little Christmas themed chocolates...now there are spa calendars with a daily pamper treat, calendars containing charms to add to a bracelet or like my boys' calendar (courtesy of Unckie G) each day contains a little Lego kit to make up a Christmas scene...So every day we take a nibble off the big birthday cake until there's practically nothing to look forward to.
