Field of dreams

Have you watched the fantasy drama starring Kevin Costner? The stand out line for me was “if you build it they will come” . Bear with me, I’m going somewhat on a tangent with this.

This line has helped forge part of my outlook on many things.

In relation to training and competition it rings true. In that regard , if I am consistent in training, the results will come. Build the layers and the response will come.

Do you have an experience of developing and implementing all that was necessary, not quite sure that the outcome would get the desired outcome , but doing all in your power to stay the course anyway? Then, eventually, able to look back and see that what you set out to do, did materialise ?

It’s a long shot to tie the ‘field of dreams’ to the endeavours required to go after leisurely goals. What is all this activity, racing, training and data collection about if not just a visual reality of our leisure? Strava can be The graveyard of dreams 😂😂😂 Gary Robbins famous YouTube documentary “where dreams go to die” captures perfectly the level of emotional, physical and financial investment one must be prepared to invest in a hunch, a feeling, a dream.

We all have ‘dreams’. No matter how mad the idea, the hunch, the dream, history speaks positively about those who acted upon it. Especially for those that failed. It’s the foundation of what we all need to experience to get to the point of truly doing what is necessary to succeed.

If you build it they will come.
If you build it , it will come.
If you build it, it might never happen, but the process will contribute to the success of trying for the next dream.

Best for the week ahead
Rich

Swirls and twirls: my TDG training update and Madmule 2027

Did you have a great healthy strong active week?

The coast wasn’t sure which way to go yesterday. As this heat wave approached there was still a bank of cold air refusing to budge.
The morning mist was heavy with a firm drizzle.
By the afternoon the heat was building and the breeze was welcome.

After a 3 hour workshop coaching Andy and Hazel all things Running with Poles, I headed off to lulworth for some reps of the far Obelisk nr Ringstead cottages. As I returned to lulworth I looked back as normal and was rewarded with the phenomenon in the picture.

I was mesmerised.

The highlight of June has been setting up the Engine Room studio in Poole. I have longed for this moment and the opportunity arose to take on this project. Stepping away from a heavy training schedule was worth it, and sensible. Helen and I did not have much sleep for 2 weeks. There is an open morning planned 5th July so look out for the details and please call by if you’re in the area.

What I have done is switched on the altitude generator and started the planned acclimatisation protocol. First, bouts of 1-6 hours at 1200-1500m and as my body adapts, a gradual ramp up to 3500+m over the coming 10 weeks.
Next week I will start exercising with it on the watt bike and then move onto the treadmill.

Mileage is low, the lowest I have ever done in the first half of the year. It will grow , though my priority is strength and conditioning, altitude adaptations, climbing and some long haul back to back simulation sessions in Brecon and the coast path.

Nearly 52, and trained endlessly since I was 10, I am appreciative of the training years and huge foundation that sits within. 200,000+ft of vert has been the game changer for this time of year and climbing is a joy at present. This s**t doesn’t get any easier physically , yet this s**t gets easier mentally.

Madmule was initiated by someone saying ‘you’re mad for doing… xyz’ and of course a link to being a little stubborn. What Madmule always had to be was off the curve. Not conformity with the status quo. Not a run club with set times. No race bibs. No loyalty or tribal allegiance. I always had a vision of bringing to the attention of others what is on the doorstep, show the way, and job done. Once shown: nerves, fears, doubts are broken. It’s ok to go down a trail where you have no clue what lies at the other end. It’s ok to be left on your own during a group run (front, middle or back of the pack) Madmule will continue to throw on the irregular, unorthodox and sometimes unpredictable sessions it’s known for. Nobody owns your journey. If the path that you relate to is not there, forge your own.

Best wishes in your endeavours and break trail

Rich

It was a solid flow session. Then I stopped to look back. And it got better!
I never forget to look back from where I’ve been. It can sometimes be enough to serve the purpose of all of this.

The sea mist and clouds were extravagant in movement and shape as the cold air hit the hot.

Lulworth and the coast path delivers every time!
