🖤🧡🔱GOOD LUCK SHRIMPS!🧡🖤🔱

This Sunday, Heidi Jones and Hayley Chick-Colley (aka the Shrimps) line up at the start of the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Malaga.

These two have been a huge part of the club over the years and they mean the world to all of us. Seeing them take on a brand new race, on a brand new course, in the orange and black is a proud moment for Porthcawl Tri Club.

You've both earned your place on that start line. Now go and enjoy it. Soak up the Spanish sunshine, trust your legs and make the most of every minute.

Go well both, the whole club will be tracking you on race day from Wales! 🧡🖤🔱

🖤🧡🔱PORTHCAWL SPRINT TRI🔱🧡🖤

This weekend the Porthcawl Sprint Triathlon brought the Tridents out in force. Some took on the course solo, some as part of relay teams, and some lined up on a triathlon start line for the very first time through our Try a Tri programme (we’ll bring you more on those guys later!)
Every single one of you gave it your all! We’re all incredibly proud of you and what an atmosphere out on course from the local crowd! 👏

A special shoutout goes to Lucy Edwards who in her first ever triathlon finished 2nd overall female! An absolutely unreal performance especially in triathlon number 1, we can’t wait to see what you do next! 🏅

Congratulations also go out to Liam Evans, Stein Jones and Will Morris coming in 3rd place in the Relay, brilliant effort out there boys! 💪

For plenty of us this was the last triathlon of the season, and what a finale it was. Racing on home turf, cheered on by clubmates and friends, is something special.

To everyone who raced, well done. Time to get ready for next season 🫡 🧡🖤🔱

🖤🧡🔱TRIDENTS TUESDAY🔱🧡🖤

A gang of Tridents took on the Cardiff Half Marathon this weekend. Whether running for a charity, running for the club or running for yourself, you all had a reason to be out there and every single one of you should be incredibly proud. 13.1 miles is no small feat. Brilliant effort from everyone! Special shoutout to MJ for Extra Miler volunteer duties 🫡

However, this weekend belongs to Hugh Battrick.
Hugh, who suffered a traumatic brain injury some years ago leaving him unable to walk even 10m this January, took on his very first multisport event at the Tonyrefail Aquathlon. A 400m pool swim followed by a 5km run, Hugh got it done! Taking that first step into multisport takes real courage for anybody and we couldn't be prouder of you. This is just the beginning!

🔱🧡🖤TRIDENTS TUESDAY🖤🧡🔱

What a week to be a Trident!

Let's start with the big one. Gary and Sian Phillips took on the Standard Distance World Championships in Pontevedra and both did amazingly well. Racing on the world stage is a huge achievement in itself, and you both represented the club brilliantly. We couldn't be prouder!

Next up, the Tridents took on the West Glamorgan Cross Country League in the first outing for the club! A great team turned out and made their mark straight away, with Hendrik de Smet finishing 5th overall in the men's and Lucy Edwards taking 8th overall in the women's. What a debut!

Over at Mumbles, Becky Pierce and Emily Williams took on the Mumbles Swim and both had brilliant swims. Emily finished a fantastic 3rd overall and Becky came home 5th overall, with both ladies claiming 1st in their age groups! Superb swimming from you both.
Worlds, mud and open water, all in one week. Fantastic efforts all round! 🧡🖤🔱

🔱🖤🧡GO WELL THE PHILLIPSES!🧡🖤🔱

Today's the day! Gary and Sian Phillips are lining up together in Pontevedra, Spain to compete at the Standard Distance World Championships!

What an incredible achievement just to be here. Racing as a couple on the world stage takes some serious talent, dedication and some very early mornings and long training hours to get to this point.

The whole of Porthcawl Tri Club is behind you both today. Swim strong, ride hard, run fast and enjoy every single second of it. You've earned your place here!

Go well Gary and Sian, we'll all be cheering you on from back home! 🧡🖤🔱

🖤🧡🔱 TRIDENT TUESDAY 🔱🧡🖤

Sunday was the big one - Ironman Wales, and the Tridents showed up in a huge way!
Ironman Wales is widely regarded as one of the toughest Ironman courses on the planet. Brutal climbs, unpredictable weather and a course that shows absolutely no mercy over 140.6 miles. Simply crossing that finish line is an enormous achievement in itself, and a fantastic group of our members did exactly that with outstanding performances all round. Every single one of you should be beaming with pride today, you faced the dragon in seriously tough conditions and did so with that trademark Trident spirit!

And on a day already full of incredible stories, one performance stopped us all in our tracks.
Rod James completed his very first Ironman at age 70, the first person to do so in this age category for 7 years! And having won his age category he has been invited to compete at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii!

Rod, we are lost for words. You are an inspiration not just to this club but to anyone who has ever told themselves it's too late. It is never too late and to borrow Ironman’s mantra - Anything is Possible.

To every single Trident who took on Ironman Wales, be as proud of yourselves as we all are of you 🧡🖤🔱

🔱🧡🖤SUPER SERIES SATURDAY🖤🧡🔱

Before our Ironman Wales Class of ‘26 head out on to the mean streets of Tenby we have something else we need to celebrate.

Three Tridents headed to Bala last weekend for the final race of the Welsh Super Series and they absolutely delivered when it mattered most!

Gary Phillips rounded off the series in style, finishing 2nd overall in his age group across the entire Welsh Super Series, what a season Gary!

But we have to talk about what happened in the women's age category competition as Porthcawl Tri Club claimed an incredible 1-2 finish in the Welsh Super Series with Denise Fitzgerald (in her first year of competing in triathlon) taking the top spot and Sian Phillips right behind her in second! A Tridents 1-2 at the end of a full series is an extraordinary achievement and we are absolutely bursting with pride for you both!

To Gary, Denise and Sian, what a way to end the season. You have represented this club with everything you've got and the whole of Porthcawl Tri Club is behind you. Llongyfarchiadau pawb! 🧡🖤🔱

🔱🧡🖤TRIDENTS TUESDAY🖤🧡🔱

What a weekend of racing for the club!
First up, a great turnout for the Tridents as we hit Swansea Bay for the third and final race of the Bay Aquathlon Series. Nicky Griffiths, Craig Griffiths and MJ were our experienced heads leading the charge and what a way to finish! Craig rounded off the series in brilliant fashion, claiming 3rd place overall in the male Super Sprint Plus distance. Incredible racing!
But this week’s post is just as much about our newer members. Louise Thyer, Shaun Kennedy and Kieran Gratton all, part of our Try a Tri programme, lined up and absolutely smashed it. For Shaun and Kieran this was their very first multisport event! To top it off, Shaun came home in a stunning 2nd place in Race 3 for the Super Sprint Plus distance on his debut. What an introduction to the sport! And finally Emily Williams, in her first competitive race in 6 years, rounded off the fantastic performances with 2nd place in the 750m swim!

Over in Barry - Denise Fitzgerald, Gary Phillips and Sian Phillips all lined up on Whitmore Bay Beach for the SWYD Sprint Triathlon, Race 5 of the Welsh Super Series and World Championship Qualifier event. Battling through a tough swim everyone put in a brilliant performance with Denise bagging another 1st in her age group on the day and putting her in pole position in the Welsh Super Series Champion with one race to go! 💪

What a week to be a Trident! 🧡🖤🔱

🧡🖤 Club Spotlight: Nicky & Craig Griffiths — “The Griffs” 🖤🧡

If Porthcawl Triathlon Club had a heart, it would look a lot like Nicky and Craig. 🧡
Honestly, where do we even start with these two? Some members show up for themselves, but Nicky and Craig show up for everyone. Whether they’re at a club session or a race, you’ll find one or both of them cheering, encouraging, and making the club feel like exactly what it is: a family. And they’re always especially brilliant with our newer members, helping them find their feet and feel like they belong.
And what a season they’ve had to back it all up! 🙌

Together:
🥇 1st place — Gritty Rascals Swimrun Gower Sprint
🥉 3rd place — Wales Swimrun Sprint

Craig:
🥉 3rd place male in series — Bay Aquathlon Super Sprint Plus

Incredible results from an incredible couple. But ask anyone in this club what makes Nicky and Craig special, and the results probably won’t even be the first thing they mention, it’s the dedication. Regulars at swim sessions, always there when they can be, and always lifting everyone around them, no matter their pace or experience. Craig gaining his Level 1 coaching this year is just another example of two people who keep giving, again and again, without ever asking for anything back.
Stalwarts doesn’t even begin to cover it. Nicky and Craig, thank you! For who you are and what you bring to this club every single week. We’re lucky to have you.
