There used to be a tax advantage with small business but now we pay corp tax at 25 percent then dividend tax on top. We pay the same as the normal working man or woman but Witt no sick pay or holiday. Now the government are with their hands out again, time for them to realise just how much we slip through the nets and allow them to have as we are busy!

As a small business owner it’s hugely frustrating when people’s opinions are based on rumour, stereotyping and even deliberate misdirection. But it’s not just me, it’s our members reaching out saying let’s correct this framing to represent what we truly are.

Every gym says they have a great community. Every gym says they’re friendly, welcoming and supportive.

But what does that actually mean?

For me, a gym’s culture isn’t the words written on its website or Instagram bio. It’s the little things that happen every day without anyone being told to do them.

It’s members knowing each other’s names. It’s someone offering a spot to somebody they barely know. It’s experienced members helping newer members. It’s people training hard, having a laugh and actually enjoying being there.

It’s respecting the gym and respecting each other.

At Sups, one of the simplest examples for me is the dumbbell rack. We’ve got a huge range of dumbbells, yet nearly every one is almost always back exactly where it belongs. Nobody is constantly chasing people to do it. Members just look after the place.

It’s also how much our members support us. They get excited when new equipment arrives, they give us feedback, they recommend us and they genuinely want to see the gym improve.

For a lot of people, coming to Sups is more than just getting a workout done. It’s a social part of their day, a chance to switch off, train hard and spend time around people they enjoy being around.

That’s what Sups Gym culture means to me.

But I’m only one person.
