Cliftonville Hockey Club

Cliftonville Hockey Club We are based in Ramsgate, Kent where we field three men's teams, two women's teams & a growing youth section.

As far as can be ascertained, the club began its activities in 1926. Starting as a mid-week side, the club's popularity soon grew and it wasn't long until it was able to field two Saturday teams. Following the WWII the club continued to grow and by 1950 had relocated twice, from Cliftonville to Margate and then finally to Ramsgate. The club has always maintained a full social calendar. Players have enjoyed many tours to the continent as well as hosting and attending festivals in the UK. In the 1970s, the club was host to The Thanet Festival - the largest festival of its kind in the world. In its more recent history the club has been joined by the Thanetians (1980), Ramsgate Ladies (1983 - marking the formation of the first Ladies section) and Westgate Ladies (2007). The club has enjoyed success on the hockey field at all levels. Over the years a number of Cliftonville players also have gone on to play hockey at County, National, International and Olympic level.

Men's 3s Open New Era with Emphatic 11-1 Rout

The Men's 3s couldn't have dreamed of a better start to life after promotion. Opening the new campaign at their brand-new home ground at Sir Roger Manwood's School, the team overcame a nervy start to deliver an absolute masterclass in clinical finishing.

After dominating the opening exchanges and creating a flurry of early chances that went unpunished, it was Maidstone 5ths who struck first against the run of play, taking a 1-0 lead.

Far from letting the setback affect them, conceding completely sparked the Men's 3s' attack into life. Once the equalizer went in, the floodgates well and truly opened. Relentless pressure, slick passing, and ruthless finishing turned the match into a procession as the home side romped to a stunning 11-1 victory.

While the goals were shared brilliantly across the squad, highlighted by Asa's incredible four-goal haul and quick-fire braces from Ollie, Kit, and Dylan the real story was the team's composure after going behind. Having narrowly missed out on promotion the previous year, Cliftonville needed to start the new 26/27 season with a strong performance to stamp their authority over the rest competition. And what a performance it was…..

The season opener was to be against Tunbridge Wells, a team that dropped down from the division above and Ville were keen to make an impression from the first whistle. With new players, a new pitch and a new formation, Ville immediately went on the offensive, applying pressure and keeping a high press, making life difficult for the visitors. Wave after wave of attacks crashed against the Wells defence, but the final conversion into points proved hard to come by.

Finally, Ville struck with Perks chalking up his first goal of the season, but it wouldn’t be the only one he tucked away in this match. The Wells defences had been breached, and it was time for Ville to start building that all important goal difference.

Ville were relentless in their domination on the pitch, with Prov, JB and Hoops commanding the centre of field and moving the ball fluidly across the turf to open up spaces that Ville could exploit.

The pressure was too much for Wells to cope with, resulting in Dave Hooper striking the backboard, putting Ville up by 2 at half time.

The second half proved to be even more successful than the first, with Ville pushing forwards at every opportunity. On the rare occasion Wells did go forwards, they were met by a brick wall in the shape of Peter, Dave W, Seb and Archie who let nothing pass them all day.

With the continued pressure on the Wells D, It didn’t take long for the goals to start flowing. A beautifully constructed move saw Simon quickly rifle the ball down to Sidders on the base line, who promptly crossed in the Perks who buried the ball into the goal. 3-0. Minutes later, Prov found himself in the score sheet with a mid-air samurai sword like strike, giving the Wells keeper yet more practice at picking up the ball out of the net behind him.

As the game continued, Perks (top scorer in the prior season), received a beautifully weighted ball from Prov in the midfield to find myself one on one with the keeper. With the grace of Ballerina and the natural instincts of a wild predator, Perks calmy darted around the keeper, slotting yet another one home.

Wells managed to pull one back after a poorly timed substitution left a gap in the Ville defence, but it was too little too late. Matt Westby drilled one from a tight angle which slipped passed the Wells keeper and Perks put the cherry on the cake, flicking the ball into back of the oppositions net to take his tally to 4 for the game, make the final score 7 – 1 to Cliftonville. Job done.

Kings Hill 2 Vs W2 (Away)

After a stressful week with many players no longer available or injured, the remaining 10 voted unanimously to go to Kings Hill and play with just the 10 with the hope that someone's availability would change last minute. That hope faded on Saturday morning and so we went with 10!

With the opposition admitting that they hadn't realised that we hadn't had a full team, it's fair to say we were evenly matched in the opening parts of the game. There was outstanding work from our midfield pairing of Kerry and new player Brooke, as they kept the ball moving well and we had attacks on the Hill goal, including a few penalty corners.

At the other end, the well disciplined team of Cheryl, Olga and Sally were well marshalled by goalkeeper Elizabeth. Any attacks by Kings Hill were easily mopped up. Towards the end of the half Kings Hill had a few penalty corners that resulted in no goal.

0-0 at the HT break, the message from captain Chloe was clear, we were playing amazing and to continue with the excellent plays through wingers Ineta and Freiya.

After the break, Kings Hill started brightly but few opportunities resulted in many clear goal options. We had a PC midway through the 2nd half, Sally struck sweetly but that was cleared off the line by a Kings Hill defender.

Unfortunately Ville started to tire and a break resulted in a 1v1 in the circle that not even a diving Elizabeth could stop. Despite pushing from Cat, Chloe and the entire midfield, we just couldn't find the equaliser.

Player of the match went to Brooke for seemingly being everywhere and in this writer's opinion being 2 people at times.

Cliftonville Men's 1st XI started their 26/27 campaign at home to Folkestone 2s. After a tetchy first half that concluded 2-1 in the away teams favour, Ville unfortunately were not able to spur on a comeback and the tie resulted in a 7-1 score line. A difficult first result to take but plenty to work on and time to change things around.

Starting the season off strong with an incredibly long trip down to Bromley and Becks. a massive collective effort from the whole team as we were 11 bare. The defence was strong with great passes out onto the line where wings were waiting in the gaps and spaces. Midfield was constantly moving and using quick, constant passing between them while forwards dragged oppos away to create space and clean passes.

Within the first minute of the second half we conceded a p flick. Shortly after, Kat regained control of the game by flying through their entire team and winning us a short corner. The mindset and play of the team had clearly shifted to become stronger and more eager in the second half. Even though it was not the outcome we were hoping for, Ville still played strong and hard, keeping our heads up with some incredible saves from Emmelia. Final outcome of 3-0 Brombecks
