This is Mortimer Tennis Club's page. We play at the tennis courts at Mortimer fairground, and have a number of teams playing in local leagues.
Mortimer Tennis Club field Men's, Ladies and Mixed teams in the Basingstoke and District Tennis League Summer and Winter seasons
The Men's team were in action again on 25th July at home against Oakley B. We lost the match 7-1 with Steve Tickle and Nick Simmonds going down 6-4 6-3 and 6-1 6-1 while Alex Russell and Andy Buswell lost the first match 6-0 6-3 and then drew the second one 3-6 6-4.
The decisive pair were a well matched Oakley B pair who normally play for Oakley A and swept all before them.
It's being a tough season for our teams but at least some tennis is being enjoyed!
[07/07/21] The pic nic is still planned for 1PM ON SUNDAY 11TH JULY I know I know, we picked a bad day but we can play tennis and then watch the mens' final no problem.
On Sunday 13th, the Men's team suffered another defeat, this time against Totally Tennis B. The opposition comprised two very able youngsters (half our team's age) and also one very canny Spaniard and one very powerful Romanian. Steve Tickle and Nick Simmonds got to 5-5 in the first set against the European duo, but then lost 7-5 and 6-1. They were outclassed by the youngsters 6-1, 6-2. Alex Russell played well in his first outing for the Men's team. Unfortunately, he and Andy Buswell lost their sets 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2.
The most important thing was that the team had great fun in the heat even at the expense of many sweat-soaked tee shirts!
[06/05/21] Thanks to Gillian, Kyle, Jean and Brian for playing against Whitchurch A this morning. Although Mortimer lost 6 sets to 2, it was great fun and look forward to a return match, especially with the promise of wine after.
[05/15/21] The Ladies team had an enjoyable morning of tennis this Saturday, until rain stopped play in the last set. Thanks to all who played.
[05/10/21] The Men's team swung into action yesterday morning for the first time in so many months. They came up against a very powerful Waverley B team, most of whom were 15-20 years younger. One pairing was so powerful, we didn't manage to take a single game but the other pairing was closer in standard and Nick Simmonds and Steve Tickle even managed to take them to a tie break. Andy Brown and Andy Buswell made up the other pairing. Perhaps an 8-0 result was not what we hoped for in our first match of the season but everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play some club tennis once again. Welcome to Andy Buswell making his debut for the club and thanks to all for turning out.
Monday mornings are proving very popular. There were enough to fill 3 courts but we all know how to queue so it didn't matter. It was definitely very organised.
Love playing tennis but don't have a partner? This is the time to be joining our club. We have 4 different session through the week for you to find others to play with. ~give us a go.
[04/27/21] Our social tennis session starts at 6pm on Tuesdays. Why not come and join us. Doesn't matter what standard of play at these sessions as long as the ball goes over the net. Made slightly easier due to one net mechanism being broken. 🙂🎾🎾
We had a really great turn out for our club morning on Monday with fantastic weather for tennis. Such a shame that the net on court 2 has been broken.
If anyone sees kids in there playing football please do let the parish council know especially if they are sitting on the net. They shouldn't be there and such behaviour spoils the courts for everyone.
Our club sessions are now up and running. NEW Monday morning session from 10am - 11am.
Tuesday sessions start at 6pm
Thursday from 4 - 5pm families will have priority
5pm - 6pm open to all members. NB: We no longer have the courts beyond 6pm
Sundays from 4pm - 6pm
It has been great to see a lot of people playing on the courts recently. We hope that some of you would like to join us. It's an opportunity to play in a friendly playing environment.
If you have children that are keen to play our new family focused Thursday session will be a great place to start. Do let us know if you are interested in the club organising some coaching for them tell us [email protected] and we will look in to arranging it.
Our 2019 AGM is finally happening - 5th February 7.30pm. Please watch our for an email with venue details.
The Parish council has put forward a proposal for multi sport on the courts and we want to hear our members views so please do attend if you can.
On behalf of those who attended the Club Christmas dinner at Burghfield Spices last night and of those that couldn't attend, I would like to give Jean a formal vote of thanks for organising what turned out to be a very successful and well attended event.
As there was a good humoured and rather loud group of lads having a celebration on a table next to ours, it would have been rather difficult to thank her last night as is the usual custom. Jean does a huge amount of work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the club and I'm sure that everybody would want her to know that we are extremely grateful.
We were delighted to welcome Tony and Courtney, our coaching team from the Shinfield Club, who joined us for the evening and I trust they enjoyed the evening as much as everyone else appeared to do.
Wishing all members of the club all the very best for Christmas and the New Year!
[11/06/19] Sandra, Gillian, Antonia and Jean played Preston Candover on Monday. Some very close games but lost 5:3 in the end. Well done to all on a rather misty evening.
Christmas Meal will be on Friday 6th December at 7.30pm at Burghfield Spices
If you haven't already let me know please confirm your place asap
It's going to be time for the Christmas meal before you know it.
Our normal date is the 1st Friday in December which is the 6th. Where does everyone want to go this year?

[07/29/19] Our Monday morning tennis sessions are proving a great hit. There were 12 on court this morning with some really great rallies. These sessions are open to non members and are free so why not pop along and join in.
Sunday 21st July, perfect conditions for tennis. Ben making a return to the fold with his old partner, had already sized up the opposition, "watch out they're good" he said. Ben and Andrew put on a gutsy performance to win the first set but were out played in the second. Nick and Ton won their sets easily. 3 -1 at half time. An outstanding performance by the Harris team in the second half ensured a maximum. Ben and Andrew followed suit 7 - 1. Old Basing had been unbeaten so far this season.
Well done to all.
[07/22/19] Sunday, 21st July, perfect conditions for tennis. Ben Money, making a return to the fold with his old partner, Andrew Richardson, had already sized up the opposition, "watch out they're good" he said. Ben and Andrew put on a gutsy performance to win the first set but were out played in the second. Nick and Tom Harris won their sets easily. 3-1 at half time. An outstanding performance by the Harris team in the second half ensured a maximum. Ben and Andrew followed suit. 7-1. Old Basing had been unbeaten so far this season.
[07/15/19] Don't forget our Monday mornings from 10 - 11am are open to the public. Come along and play some friendly tennis with our members for free.
[06/23/19] On the best day of June so far Mortimer ladies beat Whitchurch 7-1. Well done team !
[06/20/19] Mortimer mixed played a great game of tennis, winning 7 sets to 1 against Preston Candover. Although the journey was long especially due to the stop off for cheesy chips on the way home everyone enjoyed it. Well played Antonia, Ben, Gillian and Kyle.
[06/12/19] The Mixed team played a rearranged away match against Aldermaston B yesterday evening and came away with a draw in the dying light of the late evening. Both our pairs beat the opposing weaker pair 2-0 and one of the other sets was only lost 5-7 so the result was close. That's our first point of the season! Well played Kyle Butler with Gillian Butler and Ben Money with Helen Townsend.
The Mixed Team lost away against Odiham C on Monday night, but only just. The score was 5-3.
We were 3 sets to 1 down at half time, then Sandra Harding and Mark Eastwood managed to get both sets off the opposition's weaker pair which made it 3-3. Jean Thomas & Nick Simmonds lost their first set against the stronger pair 6-0 so needed to win their final set to get us the draw. They played brilliantly to get the set to 4-4 but were then pipped at the post to lose it 6-4. Fun tennis on a nice sunny evening against very friendly opponents. A great way to spend the evening apart from the result!
Well played all!
Men's Match on Sunday 26th May v Andover C - played indoors at Andover. Andover now have a very impressive set up with 4 outdoor courts and 2 indoor courts and an excellent hospitality area.
Pairings were Mark Eastwood and Jamie Richardson, Nick Simmonds and Andrew Richardson
Mark and Jamie got a maximum with Nick and Andrew scoring 2 points in what was a tight match played in a very friendly spirit. Great way to spend a Sunday lunchtime and then get back for a late Sunday lunch.
So far this year the men's team have got off to solid start winning both their matches.
[05/26/19] Well done to the ladies' team who won 5:3 against Basing on Monday 20th.
[05/19/19] Update on the gate. Thanks to Lyn parish clerk, who has come to the rescue this morning. Having thought it was all set to work with the new pin it seems to have lost power and won't open without a key. I have been lent the parish key so if you want to play check out our WhatsApp for more information and who might be playing.
Sadly, access to the courts using the gate code for the first time didn't go according to plan!! The gate was fully locked so, even though the code-key worked, the gate remained deadlocked. The team tried contacting the parish clerk but without luck.
Someone had the bright idea to try the Bramley courts which are free and open to all-comers, but they were occupied, so we ended up playing the match on the Whitchurch courts! The match finally got started at about 90 minutes late and we got thrashed! Jean Thomas & Nick Simmonds almost grabbed a set but lost it 7-5. The final set was abandoned at 1-1 as the Mayor was due to arrive for some kind of celebration, so the score was 7-0 to Whitchurch. Well done to Mark Eastwood with Sandra Harding and Jean Thomas with Nick Simmonds for smiling in adversity! Let's hope that we do better next time.
[05/12/19] What a wonderful afternoon for our pic nic and some tennis. Our President, Nick West, joined us for a chat, despite being unable to play. He and Biddy have been drawn to receive Centre Court tickets in our ballot. The second pair of tickets went to Nick Simmonds. Congratulations to both.
***Tournament and pic nic day ***
The weather looks good so hope to see you on court.
If you aren't a member why not just come and say hello.

The sun didn't shine but that didn't stop the fun on court this afternoon for the Family Tennis competition event. Well done to everyone who took part. Particular congratulations to Abigail and Richard who were our winners and Albie, Ben and Charlotte our runners up.
Thanks also to our wonderful cake makers Gillian and Peg, our two coaches who ran the event, Tony and Courtney and the additional support and play from Simon and Barry.

[04/01/19] Our season begins tomorrow!
[01/21/19] Mortimer Men’s team "nicked "a victory against Oakley B on Sunday. Nick Harris and Nick Simmonds got a maximum while Mark Eastwood and Andy Brown (playing in first match for the club) secured two further sets. Well done all!
