Smoking Increases Belly Fat
Unless you’ve been living under a rock all your life then you’ll probably already know that smoking isn’t one of the most healthiest of habits; it significantly increases your risk of cancer, heart attacks and premature death. But an even more disturbing fact about smoking is that it can increase the fat on your stomach!
Although smoking is usually associated with people losing body ‘weight’ due to suppression of appetite and an increase in metabolic rate, studies show that smokers actually have a higher waist to hip ratio (WHR) and more belly fat than non-smokers.
This happens because smoking has been shown to increases the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for laying down unsightly fat in the abdominal region. The fact of the matter is, the higher your cortisol levels are, the more belly fat you will have.
Here you can see a graph comparing the cortisol levels of smokers with non-smokers throughout a normal working day.
Another thing to consider is that one cigarette contains around 5,000 chemicals of which many of them are known carcinogens such as Arsenic, Formaldehyde, Lead, Cyanide and Vinyl Chloride.
These poisonous toxins increase the chemical stress in the body which further elevate cortisol levels. In an attempt to protect the vital organs from these poisons, the body stores away these chemicals in the fat cells which then become trapped there making it even harder for your body to lose the fat.
If you are a smoker and you are struggling to lose the fat from around your belly despite all your exercising and dieting efforts then this could be the piece of the puzzle you’re missing to finally achieve that flat, toned stomach you’re looking for.

Fitness is not just about what you can do right now, it's also about what you can recover from.
A quick tip to gauge if you have over done it during a workout is how sore do your muscles feel the next day, or even the day after that...
It's normal to feel some muscle soreness the day after a tough workout especially if you are new to exercise, haven't done so in a while or tried out some new exercises. But muscle soreness that progressively gets worse on day 2 or even day 3 post workout is a sure sign that you over did it.
Simply back of the intensity or duration on your next session and see how you feel.
