🎤 COACH, IS IT TRUE THAT…? #3

❓ “Should I always stretch before I exercise?”

This one's not quite a simple yes or no. 👀

Because something we often use interchangeably is:

Stretching and warming up.

But they're not necessarily the same thing.

A good warm-up should help prepare your body for the activity that's coming next.

That might mean:
❤️ Gradually increasing your heart rate and body temperature
🤸 Moving your joints through comfortable ranges of motion
💪 Activating the muscles you're about to use
🏋️ Practising lighter or easier versions of movements coming up in the session

For example...
If you're going to squat, your warm-up might include some controlled squatting movements.
If you're about to do a higher-energy session, you might gradually increase the pace rather than going from standing still to full intensity.
If you're strength training, you might practise the movement with less resistance before adding more load.

That's very different from simply standing still and holding a few stretches because someone once told us we “should always stretch first.”

And that doesn't mean static stretching is bad.
It absolutely has a place, particularly when improving flexibility is part of what you're working on.

It just isn't automatically the warm-up every activity needs.

💛 The clue is really in the word:

You're trying to warm up and prepare your body for what's coming.

So rather than asking:

❌ “Have I done my stretches?”

Try asking:
“Is my body ready for what I'm about to ask it to do?”

That's a much more useful question.

👇 And I'm curious...

Were you ever taught that you HAD to stretch before exercise?

I definitely think this is one where different generations will have been told very different things! 😂

⏱️ “I've only got 10 minutes...”

Great.

What can you do with them?

That's the mindset shift I want you to take from today.

Because it's very easy to dismiss the small stuff.

"It's only a short walk."

"I only managed 20 minutes."

"I didn't have time for my normal workout."

But those little pockets of movement still contribute to the bigger picture.

And perhaps more importantly, they help us move away from that all-or-nothing mentality where exercise either has to be a full workout or we don't bother at all.

Your health isn't built from one heroic 60-minute session.

It's influenced by what you do regularly over time.

So take the walk.

Do the ten minutes.

Move while dinner cooks.

Get outside at lunchtime.

Come to the 45-minute class.

And when you've genuinely got more time, do more if you want to.

Use the time you've got rather than waiting for the time you haven't. 💛

Tomorrow we're putting another very familiar fitness “rule” under the microscope...

Do you REALLY need to stretch before every workout? 👀

15/09/2026

🎤 COACH, IS IT TRUE THAT…? #2

❓ “If I haven't got an hour to exercise... is it even worth bothering?”

YES. Absolutely.

And this one matters because I think the belief that exercise needs to be a big, formal workout stops people doing a lot of movement that could actually be really valuable.

We've talked before about something as simple as taking a short walk after a meal.

We've also talked about those crazy weeks when you genuinely don't have time for your usual routine.

And that's exactly when I want you to remember this:

Something doesn't become worthless just because it was short.

🚶 10-minute walk after dinner?
Counts.
💪 15 minutes of strength while dinner's cooking?
Counts.
🚲 20-minute bike ride?
Counts.
🏋️ 30-minute workout?
Counts.
🔥 45-minute class?

Absolutely counts.

And yes, sometimes you might have an hour and fancy using all of it.

Brilliant!

But longer doesn't automatically mean better.
What is appropriate depends on what you're doing, the intensity, your goals, your fitness level and what the rest of your week looks like.

That's why I really dislike the idea of a workout having to be a certain length before it's somehow worthy.

Because imagine you've got 15 minutes available and you think:
"Well... I can't do an hour, so there's no point."
You've just turned 15 minutes of possible movement into zero.

And over time, those little opportunities add up.
It's also why some RL Fitness sessions, including Ignite and Flow, are 45 minutes. A session doesn't need another 15 minutes added simply to make it a “proper” workout. It's about what we do with the time we've got. 🔥🌿
So on those busy weeks...

Don't ask:
❌ “Have I got time for a full workout?”
Try:
💛 “What CAN I do with the time I've got today?”
Sometimes the answer will be 10 minutes.
Sometimes 30.
Sometimes 45.
Sometimes an hour.

Your body doesn't own a stopwatch.

And it certainly doesn't erase everything you've done at minute 59. 😂

💪 A little reminder after this morning's myth-busting…

Feeling sore after exercise doesn't automatically mean you've had a great workout.

And not feeling sore doesn't mean you haven't.

Soreness can simply be your body's response to a new or unfamiliar challenge — and it can vary hugely from person to person and session to session.

The aim of training isn't to leave every session completely destroyed.

It's to give your body an appropriate challenge, recover from it, adapt and gradually progress.

Sometimes progress looks like lifting a little more.

Sometimes it's better technique.

More control.

More repetitions.

Better fitness.

More confidence.

Or an exercise simply feeling easier than it did a few weeks ago.

Those are the things worth noticing.

So next time you wake up after training and think...

"Oh... I'm not even aching!"

Don't assume yesterday didn't count.

Your body doesn't need to hurt to prove you did something good for it. 💛

Sore doesn't automatically mean successful.

And successful doesn't require sore.

Tomorrow... another fitness “rule” is going under the microscope. 👀🎤

14/09/2026

🎤 COACH, IS IT TRUE THAT…? #1

❓ “If I'm not aching tomorrow, does that mean I didn't work hard enough?”

Nope!
And this is one fitness belief I'd happily see disappear. 😂

That achy feeling you sometimes get a day or two after exercise is commonly called DOMS — Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.

You're more likely to notice it when you've:
💪 Tried a new exercise
🏋️ Increased the challenge
🔄 Changed your usual training
🆕 Returned after some time away
⬇️ Done movements with a lot of controlled lengthening of the muscle

But here's the important part:
DOMS is NOT a score for how successful your workout was.

You don't need to hobble downstairs the next morning to prove you trained hard enough. 😂

A good training session should have a purpose.

Maybe you're working on strength.
Fitness.
Technique.
Mobility.
Control.
Endurance.
Or simply gradually progressing what your body can do.

And as your body adapts to training, you may actually experience less soreness from sessions that once left you aching.

That doesn't mean they've stopped working.
Your body may simply be getting better at handling them. 💪

So rather than asking:

❌ “Am I sore enough?”
Try asking:

✔️ “Am I progressing?”
✔️ “Is my technique improving?”
✔️ “Am I getting stronger?”
✔️ “Can I do something now that used to feel difficult?”

Those tell us far more.
Train for progress, not punishment. 💛
And PLEASE don't feel disappointed if you can sit on the toilet normally tomorrow morning. 😂

👇 What's another fitness “rule” you've heard that you've always wondered whether it's actually true?

💭 Can I turn the question over to you today?

We've spent this week talking about making fitness fit your real life rather than constantly trying to create the perfect routine.

But I want to know what makes that difficult for you.

If you could change ONE thing that would make exercise easier to stick to, what would it be?

⏰ A — More time / energy
😬 B — More confidence
🤷 C — Knowing what to do
🤝 D — Accountability & support
❤️ E — Actually enjoying it
💬 F — Something else entirely

There's no right answer and definitely no judgement.

I'm genuinely interested because the things that make exercise difficult aren't the same for everyone.

👇 Just pop your letter in the comments.

And if yours is F, tell me what I've missed!
You never know... your answer might inspire one of my next posts. 💛

💛 **This is what sustainable fitness looks like.**

And it probably doesn't look quite how social media sometimes tells us it should.

These aren't people whose lives revolve around exercise.

They're people with jobs.
Families
School runs.
Holidays.
Busy diaries.

Good weeks.
Exhausting weeks.
Weeks where everything falls beautifully into place...
And weeks where absolutely nothing does. 😂

Sometimes they make three sessions.
Sometimes two.
Sometimes one.
Sometimes life gets in the way and I don't see them at all.

**But they come back.**

And I think that's something we don't celebrate nearly enough.

Because consistency doesn't mean never missing a workout.

It doesn't mean exercising every day.
It doesn't mean having a perfect routine 52 weeks of the year.

Sometimes consistency simply means **not turning one missed week into giving up altogether.**

It's going on holiday and coming back.
Having a hectic week at work and coming back.
Looking after everyone else for a while... and then remembering to make a little time for yourself again.
It's understanding that fitness can be part of your life without needing to take over your life.

And these photos?

This is what that looks like at RL Fitness.

💪 People getting stronger.
😊 People growing in confidence.
🤝 People encouraging each other.
😂 Plenty of laughing.

Nobody here is doing it perfectly.

**They don't need to.**

They're simply showing up when they can, doing something positive for themselves and continuing to come back.

And to me, that's success.

Not never missing.

**Coming back. 💛**

So if you've missed a few sessions lately, had a chaotic summer or your routine has gone completely out of the window...

You haven't failed.

There's nothing to “start again”.

Just come back.

We'll be here. 💛

Your routine doesn't need to look impressive.🤩
It needs to work.

Your friend might exercise four times a week.
Someone you follow online might train six.
Your partner might love getting up at 5:30am to exercise.

And you might look at your life and think...
"I'm doing well if I manage once or twice!"

And do you know what?

That's okay.❗️

Because somebody else's routine tells us absolutely nothing about what your body, goals or life need.

A sustainable approach to health isn't simply about cramming as much exercise into your week as possible.

It's the whole picture.

💪 Training — challenging your body and building strength and fitness.
😴 Sleep — giving your body and brain time to recover.
🌿 Recovery — allowing yourself easier days and recognising when your body needs them.
🥗 Nutrition — fuelling yourself well without expecting every meal to be perfect.
🚶 Everyday movement — the walking, stairs, gardening, playing with the kids and all the movement that happens outside a workout.
❤️ Life — family, friends, meals out, holidays, work, hobbies and all the things that make your life yours.

Because here's the bit we sometimes forget...

Your fitness routine is supposed to support your life.

Your life isn't supposed to revolve around your fitness routine.

Some weeks you'll have more time and energy.
Other weeks you'll need more recovery.
Sometimes you'll train three times.
Sometimes once might be exactly what you can manage.

The goal isn't to make every week identical.
It's to build something flexible enough that when life changes...

You don't have to quit. You adjust.

So if you've spent this week looking at what everyone else is doing, here's your Friday reminder:

Stop asking...

❌ “Am I doing enough compared with them?”

And start asking...

💛 “Is what I'm doing working for me?”

Does it fit my life?
Do I enjoy it?
Can I recover from it?
Is it helping me feel stronger, healthier or better?
Could I realistically keep doing it?

Because if the answer is yes...
That's a pretty good routine.

What does a routine that “works” actually mean to you? 👇 I'd love to know.

HOW MUCH DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT YOUR PELVIC FLOOR?

We hear a lot about strengthening our core, lifting correctly, improving mobility and getting fitter…

But there’s another incredibly important part of the picture that we probably don't talk about enough....... our pelvic floor.

And it plays a much bigger role in exercise, movement and everyday life than many of us realise.

That’s why I’m really excited to be welcoming Leila Holmes, Specialist Musculoskeletal & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, to RL Fitness for a special 90-minute workshop:

💗 PELVIC FLOOR HEALTH & TRAINING EFFECTIVELY

📅 Monday 5th October
⏰ 6:15pm–7:45pm
📍 RL Fitness, Redditch
🎟️ £8 per person
👥 Only 15 spaces available
🙌 Open to members AND non-members

During the evening, Leila will help us understand:

✨ Why pelvic floor health matters when we exercise
✨ How the pelvic floor works with your core, breathing and the rest of your body
✨ How to train effectively and manage pressure
✨ Signs and symptoms worth paying attention to
✨ How you can improve and support your pelvic floor health
✨ What to do — and where to go — if something doesn't feel quite right

And here's something really important…

You don't need to be experiencing pelvic floor symptoms to come along.

This is just as much about education and prevention, understanding your body, knowing what to look out for and learning how to train confidently and effectively for the long term.

There'll be an opportunity to learn directly from a specialist, ask questions and hopefully take away plenty of practical information you can actually use.

🎁 PLUS, everyone attending will receive a little bonus feature too… 👀

Spaces are limited to just 15 people, and the workshop is open to RL Fitness members, friends, family and anyone else who feels they could benefit.

💬 Want a space?

Comment INTERESTED below or send me a private message and I'll send you the booking link.

And if you know someone who might benefit from this workshop, please feel free to tag them or share this post with them. 💗

⏰ “I'd love to exercise more... I just don't know where I'd fit it in.”

Sound familiar?
When life is already full, telling someone to “make more time for exercise” isn't particularly helpful.

Because where exactly are we finding this mysterious extra hour? 😂

Instead, try something different.

Look for your anchors.
These are the things in your week that happen fairly predictably.
🎒 School drop-off
💻 Your lunch break
🚗 Taking the kids to an activity
🏠 Getting home from work
🐕 Walking the dog
☕ That half-hour before everyone else gets up

Then ask:
Could I attach some movement to something I'm already doing?

Maybe you walk for 10 minutes after lunch.
Take your trainers when the kids have football and walk while you wait.
Do 15 minutes at home before your shower.
Book a class on the way home from work.
Or make a 9:15am session part of your routine once you've done the school run.

Suddenly we're not desperately searching for an empty hour in an already packed diary.

We're finding little opportunities inside the life we're already living.
And sometimes that might be 10 minutes.
Other times it might be 45 minutes.
Sometimes you'll have time for a full class.
It all counts.

And once you've found a time that genuinely works?

📅 Protect it.
Put it in your diary like you would any other appointment.

Because we've spent this week talking about building a routine for your real life, not your imaginary perfectly-organised one.

This is how we start doing that.

💛 Don't build your life around fitness. Build fitness into your life.

And if one of your anchors happens to line up with an RL Fitness class... well, you know where I am. 😉
