I have recently tried making some medieval food. I tried making a mid-status pottage with a mix of authentic vegetables, bacon and the secret ingredient of duck fat. I then fired it all in a pot until it was soft and then hollowed out some bread trenchers. Over all it was very tasty and trying to work out how to make it at shows.

Over the April bank holiday weekend in 2019; we went to a training weekend in Reading. I completed my basic test to allow me to fight at shows with the other Crusade members and we trained as Ayyubids and Knights.

In August 2019, Roegate Levy accompanied the rest of Crusade Re-enactment at M5 in the midlands of England at a multi-period re-enactment show, showcasing different groups from around the country, portraying a variety of periods through history, beginning with the Greeks and ending with the Iranian embassy siege in 1980.
Roegate Levy was portraying medieval Templar knights and sargeants fighting against the Ayyubid forces during the 3rd Crusade (1189 - 1192) in the Levant.
Here are some photos of us over the weekend, including members of Hrafn Broethr (another Crusade group) who also took part in this show.

The Battle of Hastings was a formative event in the creation of Britain. The Normans arrived in 1066 and fought the Anglo-Saxons and won. William I 'The Conqueror' became the King of England and built castles all over the land.
As Crusade Re-enactment, we portray the Normans and fight the Saxons in Battle, East Sussex.
We have two types of shield; a bendy cross and a dragon, both on a green background.
The shields in use at the Battle of Hastings by the Normans were round-top Kite shields.
The process we use to make these shields includes cutting two pieces of ply and gluing them together with claps to create the right amount of curve. Then the shield is edged with rawhide and covered in linen, and painted.
These images show the production of the shields, and some shots with fans and psyching ourselves up before the battle began, and the battle itself.
Enjoy!!

There is a process to developing a shield from a piece of wood into a protective barrier between you and an enemy. Shields can be used to show what side of a conflict you are on by painting the heraldry onto them.
For the Battle of Evesham in August 2019, we all joined different Knights as their retinue (protectors). Fred joined the retinue of Nicholas Seagrave, who fought at the Battle of Evesham on the rebel side, with Simon DeMontford. His heraldry is three bushels in white, on a black background.
This is a series of photos to represent the development of the shield from linen covered wood; to a shield usable at the re-enactment of the battle.
