Stand up paddle boarding!

Looks like everyone had an amazing time at learning to paddle board.

Children & Young People Service team organised for the 11UP's group to go paddle boarding. Check out their page on Instagram for more details and for the great work the charity does to support people in the area. Looks like it was great fun!

is a beautiful place and there has been a lot of work to improve the facilities over the past couple of years. The team at SHAC would always be happy to discuss any accessibility needs you may have. It is worth bearing in mind that is is a natural area and therefore can be rough/soft under foot and uneven in places. Therefore it may not be suitable for those with significant mobility difficulties. However it is a feast for the natural senses, and wonderful to see the young people having such a great time!

The charity Scope is running a campaign demanding the Government makes play fair for disabled children.

They are encouraging people to sign their open letter, which can be found at:

https://campaigns.scope.org.uk/page/104557/petition/1?locale=en-GB

Many disabled children can’t enjoy their local playground because it isn’t designed for them, and this isn't fair or right. The Government must fix this and invest in an inclusive playgrounds fund.

It saddens me personally that thousands of pounds was spent refurbishing our local, popular playground a few years ago, and not one piece of inclusive equipment was included. This was a missed opportunity, and is unlikely to now be changed for decades. We can do better!

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA)...

https://www.rda.org.uk

RDA is a charity, with services across the whole of the country, including Surrey. It provides fun activities such as riding and carriage driving, as well as therapy, fitness, & skills development. It is supported by 18,000 amazing volunteers and qualified coaches, and there are nearly 500 RDA centres all over the UK.

RDA is an inclusive and diverse organisation. They welcome clients with physical and learning disabilities and autism, and there are no age restrictions.

On the website, there is a "find your local group" page. I found 30 groups within 20 miles of my home address. Contact details for each group are on the website.

📹 video credit: goes fully to RDA, who gave me permission to share to promote their wonderful charity.

Image description / alt text ....

Alt text is a short text description of a photo that's read aloud by a screen reading program. This text is an essential way for the visually impaired to get the clearest image of internet photos.

Instagram automatically creates alt text for your Instagram posts through object recognition technology but automatic alt text is highly inaccurate. It doesn't understand the most important part of the photo and lacks the context to explain why you posted a particular photo. It is better if possible, to manually enter your text yourself.

To add alt text to your Instagram photos, use the "Advanced Settings" link after you choose a filter when creating a post. You can edit the information to improve the accuracy of the image description.

Disability History Month UK 2021....

Is in it's 12th year, and is running this year from 18th November. Visit www.ukdhm.org for more information.

The joint themes this year are:
- Disability and hidden impairments
- Disability s*x and relationships

The organisers aims are to:
- Celebrate lives as disabled people
- Challenge disabilism by exploring oppression over time and now
- Achieve equality

For me, it is a time to reflect and learn, listen to the disabled community, and hear their stories, concerns and aspirations for what the future may hold.
