A huge congratulations to our Rhymney RFC Under 11s players Freddie, Oscar and Hudson, who proudly represented Blaenau Gwent Schools today against a very strong Llwchwr Schools side.

A fantastic achievement and another brilliant experience for the three boys.

Everyone at Rhymney RFC U11s – your teammates, coaches and families – is incredibly proud of what you’re achieving.

Well the inevitable first-game question was, to the relief and delight of Brewers fans, emphatically answered so far: yes, Rhymney could compete away from home against a very useful and established side in this higher division. In fact, had one of two Tom Elliott kicks - one early on which hit the nose (inside the post) of the metal post-topping fox pictured, or the last kick of the game with a difficult penalty - gone over, it would have been a five pointer for the Brewers, instead of a pair of bonus points from their 4-3 try tally and narrow defeat! Bedlinog, after a dodgy first ten minutes, were always dangerous, with a crop of fine carriers in front and back rows and swift transfer and inside passes behind. Tyler Evans' men showed fine spirit and some good individual displays along with a lot of tackling, with just a few lapses and two unlucky slips in running out of defence. Those cost the two penalties which were the hosts' only second-half points after they had stretched to a 24-10 interval lead with two late converted tries. The Brewers couldn't crown early pressure with points, but equalised the Foxes' converted opener with a penalty try for a late tackle on Alex Davies. Tom Elliott's penalty again drew Rhymney level after a home kick, but with a yellow card (mistaken identity?!) for the visitors Bedlinog got it to a 14 point lead on the whistle. Sharp work from scrum half Jack Worgan brought him an unconverted score on the restart, and with Oli Hulbert, Sonny Meredith and Co working very hard up front, the Brewers held up four successive mauls to relieve pressure after skipper Tyler Evans had grabbed a typical opportunist try improved by Elliott. Then came those slips and home kicks, but sharp back Cody Jones capped a fine move with a converted try: one point in it, but Tom's last gasp penalty chance slid a foot wide. Well done though, all. Brynmawr at home in a fortnight will be next up. Akky.
