Stones Cricket Club, Ripponden, was formed through the local Wesleyan chapel. The clubs first ground was situated in a field opposite the church. This can still be identified today, as a ledge where the wicket was levelled remains visible. A number of other local teams were members of the Halifax and District Amateur League in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Barkisland, Zion, Soyland Town, Rishworth and Ripponden Conservative Club. In the early days, Stones fielded a side made up exclusively of cricketers with the surname "Whiteley'! Like many other local cricket clubs, Stones were affected by the Great War and closed down due to the dislocation. The club moved to Swift Cross in the immediate post-war period. Up until 1924 the Swift Cross ground was rented. The opportunity then came to buy the ground for £100. Four club members acted as trustees, providing £25 each. The ground was bought from J.R. Whiteley at Great House. In the 1920s and 1930s Swift Cross was not just the site of a cricket ground; there was also a putting green and a set of tennis courts. Some time in the 1930s the club changed its name from Stones Wesleyans to Stones Methodists. Given that the club is now known simply as "Stones', this means that it has had three different incarnations!. In the 1930s members erected a small tea hut near where the scorebox stands today. The club had brought the construction all the way from The Shay football stadium in the middle of Halifax. In 1938 and 1954 Stones bagged the prestigious Halifax Parish Cup - an amazing achievement for a small village side. A new pavilion was opened in 1971. In 1995 the building was extended and refurbished - the whole project costing £25,000. More recently the club have extended the pavilion which has doubled the clubhouse in size.

📊 Season Review & Final Standings…

1st XI…

2025 saw the 1’s condemned to the bottom tier after a dismal campaign. It was a tough year, but there was no time to sit and wallow, attention quickly turned to 2026 and the number one objective across the whole club - Promotion. Jack Hep’ and Tom Mellor returned to the club after time away from cricket, as Will Thickett left for pastures new at Prem’ side SBCI and Matt Bridges returned to Barkisland.

The first eight games saw six wins and two frustrating abandonments against fellow promotion hopefuls Outlane. June was a different story… Four losses from four games. Panic? No. Ten wins would follow, including defeats of Outlane and league leaders Queensbury, as the lads went on a relentless march towards their objective. With the finish line in sight, there was a brief wobble at Bridgeholme, but a commanding victory on the final day against Sowerby Bridge saw promotion achieved! A huge congratulations to Ethan and every player who played their part.

Highlights… Ethan Mosey racked up 564 runs, averaging 30+ alongside Scott and Connor. In the bowling department, Harrison and Connor took a combined 94 wickets, with the latter just pipping the former, 48 to 46. Zack was as surprised as anyone when he registered a career best 7-fer at Leymoor.

Following Saturdays game, there were celebrations long in to the night, and no doubt it’ll be the same on Presentation night. But, as was the case a year ago, time for reflection will end and preparation will begin…

📊 Season Review & Final Standings…

2nd XI…

Last season, the 2’s had an outstanding campaign, finishing 3rd and reaching the quarter final of the Crossley Shield. This year, after a key departure and players promoted to the First XI, the objective was to cement their First Division status. Jonas and the team did more than just that…

After a stuttering start, they soon clicked in to gear, and ultimately found themselves in the thick of a promotion battle once again - A battle that went down to the final day for the second year running. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as results elsewhere meant promotion to the Premier Division continues to evade them, for now…

The highlights were headlined by another long Crossley Shield cup run. Culminating in a home Semi Final against local rivals Triangle. The lads fell to an agonising 12 run defeat, but yet again showcased their ability to mix it with the best teams out there. The bowling exploits of JJ, Jonas and Beefy were another standout, taking a staggering 125 wickets combined. Home form was key, with eight wins, one defeat and one abandonment - bowling the top four sides out all for less than 100 in the process.

This team’s appetite for success is unwavering, firmly knocking on the door for the last two seasons, Jonas and the team are keen to ensure next season those near misses are transformed into success. With a large chunk of the squad in their late teens and early to mid twenties, the foundations are in place to ensure we’re competing for many years to come.

📊 Season Review & Final Standings…

Sunday XI…

2025 was a tough year for the Sunday’s - However, survival was achieved on the final day, shocking then leaders and title hopefuls Upper Hopton. The lads were keen not to find themselves in that position again this time round…

Will and the boys got off to a flier, winning their first six games before coming unstuck at Slaithwaite. The second half of the season wouldn’t be as fruitful, as wins became hard to come by. However, crucially in defeat, they continued to pick up valuable bonus points and soon any relegation fears were firmly put to bed.

Highlights most certainly include the win over Rastrick (their only defeat of the season), Matty Harker’s 27 wickets and the skipper’s maiden century against SBCI.

A solid 5th placed finish out of nine is a brilliant achievement, given the strength of opposition in this division. Another year of cricket under the belts of some inexperienced players, both young and old, stands the team in good stead for 2027…

✍️ Weekend Results…

The 1’s chase down a revised target of 100 to earn the 12 points and promotion to the second tier!!! Congratulations to all involved throughout the season!

Results elsewhere meant promotion was off the cards for the 2’s at Bridgeholme mid way through the afternoon. Despite this, they went down fighting and fell to a narrow defeat.

The Sunday’s round off the season with a tied game at Lightcliffe. They finish the season with a 5th placed finish - cracking effort given the strength of the sides above them.
