Over the last 14 years my main focused on gym based fitness events in a sport called “cross -training “, and is similar to “cross fit” (which has taken off very well in the USA and now the UK). The main difference between the two is that the former has a more cardio bias and the latter a more weight bias. However, the effects on the body are similar in that both increase metabolic rate and strip fat off more than any other type of fitness due to the constant variety in reps and distances that the body has to adapt to. Cross- Training (formerly called Ultra- Fit) Competitions are essentially gym based endurance challenges consisting of 8-12 back to back discipline’s containing cardio and weight components , preformed against a running clock. I normally compete in about 3-4 of these national events per year and it gives great focus to my training. I have nearly always paced well .Below is a short list of my top 3 places in some of the larger events over the years, other than one , these are all open age category results :
Ultra-Fit World X-Training Championships 2004 (Bahrain)
Team 1st
Individual 5th
Superstars (Luton) 1st 2006
Health Club Games (London) 1st 2006
Calso Lucky “7’s” 1st (Masters) 2007
Superfit (Scotland) 1st 2008
Preston XT Championships 1st 2008
Gym Iron Man 2nd 2008
Black Sheep 3rd 2016
More recently, in the past year, I have concentrated on the concept 2 “sprint” indoor rowing competitions in which I have to be below or equal to 75kg in weight to compete .To achieve this weight without losing muscle mass or endurance power involves a strict regime of structured nutrition and training so it is body fat that I loose and not muscle. When I compete in these events i am normally 6-7% body fat. The training for it is very intense and painful but I have achieved good results. This is a list of my achievements / personal bests to date, all at or under 75kg body weight. Distance Time Year
Lowest pull 1:15/500m 2016
369m (current World Record in 40-49 age category) 1 minute 2016
500m (current British Record in 40-49 age category) 1min 25.3 secs 2016
1000m 3mins 11 secs 2004
2000m 6 mins 47.2 secs 2004
42,195m (marathon) 3 hours 58 seconds 2016
I have put the dates when all the competitions /events /personal bests were carried out to show that from the ages of 35 – 50 I have lost virtually no strength/muscle mass/ or endurance fitness by training intensely but smart. On the Boditrax machine at my local gym in March 2016 just before my 50th birthday in preparation for my World Record 1 minute attempt I had a body fat % of 6-7% and a metabolic age of 34. Basically what I am saying is that metabolic ageing /weight gain/muscle wastage can be halted or slowed down significantly by intense short duration training methods that I use. These can be achieved training intensely in a gym or done with more fun in the fresh air and nice surroundings as an outdoor Boot Camp allows. Initially I am looking to run two 1 hour long Boot Camps every week. It will be suitable for intermediate and advanced fitness levels. Experience-see above, however, I am not a Personal Trainer / Instructor /First Aider and hold no such qualifications.
