I always have a notebook beside me when I'm talking business with someone.
Partly because I do love a notebook ๐... but mainly because I'm listening.
And strangely, I'm not always listening for the obvious problem.
Someone might tell me they need more customers, their marketing isn't working, they're not making enough money, or they're working far too many hours.
I'll make notes.
I'll ask questions.
But often, I'm waiting for one little sentence.
And it's amazing how often it pops up somewhere in the middle of the conversation...one of those sentences is....
"Well, we've always done it like that."
๐๐ And THAT'S when my ears prick up.
Because why?
Why do you do it that way?
Does it still work?
Is it still profitable?
Does the customer actually want it?
Is there an easier way?
Or has nobody questioned it for the last five years?
Sometimes the biggest opportunities in a business aren't hidden in some complicated strategy.
They're sitting right there in the things you've stopped noticing because they've become
"just what we do."
That's one of the things I love about looking at someone else's business.
I don't have the history.
I don't have the emotional attachment.
And I don't know that something is supposed to be done a certain way.
So I can ask the seemingly daft question...
"Why?"
And sometimes that one little question opens up a whole new conversation.
So here's my Insight Sunday question for you:
๐ What's one thing in your business you do simply because
"we've always done it like that"?
Maybe it's worth getting the notebook out and questioning it. ๐๐งก
