Progression in Hapkido: Integrating Martial Arts and Healing Arts

In my Hapkido school, advancement from 4th to 5th Dan requires not only physical prowess but also training and certification in healing arts. This reflects a historical connection between martial arts and healing practices.

Since 2006, I have worked as a therapist, utilising clinical hypnotherapy, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), and other therapeutic approaches to support individuals with diverse emotional and mental health needs.

Historically, communities worldwide relied on knowledgeable individuals for guidance in areas like construction, agriculture, hunting, combat, and medicine. Elders, often possessing accumulated wisdom and experience, played a crucial role in transmitting knowledge to younger generations. This tradition highlights the importance of holistic well-being within a community.

My path to becoming a therapist was a natural progression within my martial arts journey and a complementary discipline. Martial arts instructors and masters have historically practised bone-setting, herbalism, acupuncture, and other healing modalities.

While less common today, the integration of healing arts remains a valuable complement to martial arts training, offering a balance to the combative aspects and reflecting a more holistic approach to well-being.

I would like to hear if you are also a healer and a martial arts instructor or master. Let me know in the comments.

Recognising Unhealthy Power Dynamics in Martial Arts Training

The martial arts community is filled with incredible instructors who dedicate their lives to helping students grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. However, like any field involving authority and trust, it can sometimes attract individuals who exploit these dynamics.

Red flags to watch for:

Instructors who require complete obedience, even when it goes beyond safe and proper training guidelines.

People who isolate students from their family, friends, or other learning opportunities may not realise how much they can affect the students' well-being and growth. It's important to foster a supportive environment that encourages connection and support.

Leaders who see themselves as the "only true teacher" or dismiss other schools and styles might miss out on the richness of diverse perspectives, which can lead to missed opportunities for growth and deeper understanding.

Instructors who resort to fear, humiliation, or emotional manipulation as teaching tools are undermining a positive learning environment. Educators need to create safe and supportive spaces where students feel respected and motivated to learn.

Anyone who takes advantage of the student-teacher relationship for personal, financial, or sexual reasons should be held accountable and supported in creating a safe, respectful environment.

Those who discourage questions or critical thinking about techniques or philosophy often overlook the value of curiosity and open discussion, which can lead to a deeper understanding and more meaningful insights.

Healthy martial arts instruction includes:

Clear boundaries and professional conduct

Encouragement to train elsewhere and learn from multiple sources

Respect for students' personal lives and relationships

Teaching that builds confidence rather than dependency

Transparency about costs, requirements, and expectations

Creating an environment where students can voice concerns safely

A truly skilled and confident instructor will warmly support your journey toward becoming an independent thinker and martial artist. They’re there to help you grow your own strength and wisdom, encouraging your independence rather than fostering reliance on their approval.

Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it's worth paying attention to. Remember, your martial arts journey should boost your confidence and sense of independence, not make you feel less about yourself.

What experiences have helped shape your view on what makes a healthy or unhealthy training environment? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!

Last Friday in Rugby, I had the pleasure of leading a lively 2-hour self-defence taster session for a fantastic group of 19 teenagers. They were eager to learn, and I received some excellent feedback that made the experience even more rewarding.

Martial Arts, Martial Sports & Self-Defence:
Why They’re Not the Same

It’s easy to believe that being a black belt in a martial art or a world champion in a martial sport automatically means you can handle yourself in a street conflict.

While these achievements are impressive and demonstrate dedication, discipline, and skill, they don’t always translate to practical self-defence in real-world situations.

Martial Arts:

Martial arts such as Karate, Taekwondo, or Kung Fu often focus on forms, techniques, discipline, and traditional practices. They help develop confidence, fitness, and mental focus, but the training usually takes place within controlled environments with partners who respect the rules.

Martial Sports:

Martial sports such as Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA teach you how to execute techniques against resisting opponents, but they follow strict rules and safety protocols. You learn to operate within a system, and training conditions are consistent. There are no weapons, and only a single attacker is present.

The Reality of Street Conflict:

A real-world attack ignores the mats, referees, or agreed-upon rules. It is often swift, chaotic, and unpredictable, with the primary aim being to escape safely, rather than to win points or showcase perfect form.

Your martial art or sport demands training and competing in a specific style and rhythm, which can become deeply embedded. In a sudden, chaotic confrontation, this may lead to hesitation as your mind seeks the “right” move from your training, possibly delaying your response when what is actually needed is simplicity and immediacy.

Self-Defence: Simple and Practical

Self-defence training is designed to be:

- Simple and direct
- Focused on awareness, avoidance, and escape
- Quickly learned and applicable under stress
- Adaptable to the chaos of real situations

Unlike martial arts and sports, self-defence isn’t about years of training to perfect techniques. It’s about learning effective, easy-to-remember responses to threats so you can protect yourself and get home safely.

All Have Value, But Know the Differences

Martial arts and martial sports are excellent for fitness, discipline, and personal development, and they can enhance your ability to defend yourself. However, they are not the same as self-defence and should not be mistaken for it.

If your goal is to handle street conflicts effectively, consider adding self-defence training to your toolkit so you can respond to real-world violence with simplicity, clarity, and the ability to protect yourself without hesitation.

Since moving to the Rugby area in 2019, I have kept a relatively low profile in terms of teaching and have been quiet about it; however, I have recently started reaching out to local groups. I will be teaching self-defence to a group of teenagers at a local youth club, with the intention of pursuing other ventures in the area. Additionally, I am working with Rugby Neighbourhood Watch to provide self-defence courses to women in the area.
