Neglect can happen in any household, regardless of income or background.

It doesn’t always look obvious from the outside. A child may appear well cared for materially—fed, clothed, and housed—yet still experience a lack of emotional attention, warmth, or consistent engagement. Over time, this can leave them feeling invisible, unheard, or emotionally disconnected.

This is why neglect can be so easily missed. In more affluent settings, it may be even less visible because basic physical needs are met, masking what is happening emotionally.

Neglect is not defined by financial circumstances—it is defined by the absence of consistent care, emotional responsiveness, and meaningful connection.

Safeguarding means looking beyond assumptions and recognising that harm isn’t always visible. Noticing the quieter signs and responding early can make a real difference.
