ACU MXGB Youth, Round Five. Foxhill.
Like, follow and share.
The fifth and final round of the prestigious ACU MXGB Youth, incorporating the MX1 and MX2 Clubman, plus the Women’s and the Women’s Youth championships, travelled to the revitalised GP track at Foxhill last weekend, where all the championship battles were decided, with several even going to the very last race in the calendar.
The MXY2 class was very tight at the top at the start of the weekends, with those adult stars of tomorrow putting on quite a show. In truth, Malachi Allan (MAIRS Auto Repairs KTM) already had one hand on the winners' prize, and only a disaster could stop him from being the champion, but it nearly happened. Only one rider could take the championship away from Allan, and that was Marley Alder (Pole Position KTM). And he needed the best racing weekend of his life.
Alder led the pack around the opening lap of race one, with Allen in second and Harry Lee (Triumph) third. That order remained until about lap five, when Lee slipped by Allen for second place, perhaps as Allen was thinking about the championship. They remained in that order until the end of the race. Travis L Laughton (Southease MX Park Yamaha), after passing Jack Brearey (KTM) on the first lap, finished fourth, with Wildcard rider Tristain McGrath fifth, having started eighth.
Race two on Saturday afternoon was a shocker. Alder and Laughton led the field at the end of the first lap, with Allan third and doing enough for the championship. But on lap five, Allan crashed out and went back to the paddock. Alder went on to win the race from Laughton and Lee, but with the points he had already scored, Allan could not be beaten in the championship.
On Sunday, the final day of the championship, Allan didn’t race, but Alder did all he could, winning both races to close the gap on the new champion. The series ended with the final two separated by just seven points. Lee and Laughton shared second and third places on the day, with Lee second overall and Laughton on the last step of the podium. Blake Ward-Clarke (KTM) was sixth overall for the weekend but third in the championship standings. Laughton and Lee finished ninth and tenth in the championship but didn’t compete in every round.
You have to love the big-wheel 85s. They fly over the big Foxhill jumps with no fear, easily travelling as far as most 450s. All very entertaining.
Casey Lister (JL Cox Cranes KTM) was the man to beat in this class. He led from the drop of the gate to the chequered flag in race one and was chased across the line by Cohen Jagielski (Goswell KTM) after he passed Ethan Gawley (Ethan Gawley Racing KTM) on the opening lap and Jett Gardiner (Team Matt Gradiner KTM) on lap three. Henry Lewis (KTM) stayed in fifth for the entire race, while Riley Ray Barrow (Mad 4 Motocross KTM), after passing Oscar Hindley (KTM) on lap one, was sixth.
In race two, Lister led from the start, with Jagielski and Gardener in his wheel track. The order stayed the same, lap after lap, until, with a lap and a half to go, Lister made a mistake and Jagielski slipped by for the race win, with Gardener following him through for second. Lister held on to third, which was enough to make him this year's champion. Ethan Gawley (Ethan Gawley Racing KTM) moved up from sixth to finish fourth, with Barrow fifth.
Lister didn’t start either race on Sunday, perhaps due to injury. Gardener and Jagielski led the pack around the opening lap, exchanged places, and the order stayed the same until the end of the race. Barrow spent the whole race in third, while Franky Donoghue (ASA Gas Gas) did the same in fifth. Notable rides came from Ethan Gawley (Ethan Gawley Racing KTM), who started twenty-seventh and finished seventh, and from Henry Lewis (KTM), who started twenty-first and finished sixth. Both were great efforts.
In the fourth and final race, Gardener led Jagielski and Gawley from start to finish. Barrows, after passing Lewis on lap one, was fourth, with Lewis fifth.
Overall, it was Jagielski from Gardener and Gawley, and in the final championship standings, it was Lister from Jagielski and Barrow.
Frankie Noll (M+N Vehicle Service Husqvarna) was the man to beat in the small-wheel 85s. He hadn’t finished outside the top three overall all year until this, the last round. Perhaps nerves were getting to him.
With three wins and a second place, Forrest Roberts (MJW Performance KTM) romped to the overall win, beating race two winner and the only man to beat Roberts, Tommy Gaddes (SPJ Motorcycles Kawasaki), with the pair ending the weekend separated by just ten points. Riley Rogers (Tile Farm Off Road Yamaha) was pushing the two leaders and was in the top three in all but the last race, where a slight slip dropped him from second to fourth, leaving him third overall. Noll was fifth overall.
In the final championship standings, Noll was champion by forty points over Gaddes and Rogers.
Jack Waters (JL Cox Motorsports KTM) has had an amazing year in the junior 65s. He has won four of the five rounds and fourteen of a possible eighteen races, and is, of course, this year's champion.
With three wins and a second place, Waters won the overall, as the other riders seemed to struggle to finish consistently high up. Freddy Budgen (Dirtstore KTM) chased Waters over the line in the first race, then added two fourth places and a sixth for second place. With two third places and two fifths, Kobe Roberts (Fabrican KTM) was third overall.
In the final championship standings, Waters was the champ by 108 points over Townley and Foreman.
With four wins out of four races, Lauren Collingwood (DK Offroad KTM) dominated the women’s class again. She won race one by just under twenty-five seconds from wildcard rider Ria Truman. In the second, she once again beat Truman by just under twenty-two seconds. Truman gave Collingwood a run for her money in race three, as the pair were separated by just nine seconds, while in the last race it was back to seventeen seconds.
Overall for the weekend, after excluding non-registered riders, Collingwood was the winner, taking the win by ten points from Georgia Potter (KTM), with Kelly Phillips (Armor Electrical Honda) third. On the youth side of the event, Mylie Evans (KTM) was unbeaten and the overall winner, ahead of Skye Brough (RUTZZ Husqvarna) and Angelica Bennett (Ultimate Wheels Yamaha).
In the final championship standings, Collingwood was the champion from Phillips and Potter, while in the youth standings, it’s Evans who is the champion.
What a year Lewis Taylor (Van Care KTM) has had in the clubman MX1 championship. Once you take out the non-registered riders that don’t score points. He won all five rounds with four race wins. Nine second places and five thirds. He never finished out of the top three.
Wildcard Jesse Wren got the holeshot at the start of race one and led all but the last lap, when another wildcard rider, Shaun Springer, came from fifth at the start, caught and passed him for the win. Lewis Taylor (Van Care KTM) came from ninth place to finish third. Tallon Aspden, yet another wildcard, was fourth as wildcards dominated the leaderboard. The same happened in race two, with Springer notching his second win and registered rider Taylor third.
It took three laps for Springer to take the lead in race three, with Wren second and Taylor moving from sixth to third. In the fourth and final race of the weekend, Springer made it four race wins from four starts, while Taylor managed to get past Wren for second place.
Overall, it was Taylor from Elliot Pugh (Kawasaki) and Ben Butler (Rutzz Racing Kawasaki), but in the championship, Taylor was champion over Scott Bates (IDS Transport KTM) and Lewis Petfield (KTM).
In the clubman MX2s, wildcard rider Luke Dean led race one from start to finish, while Kyle Briggs (CSJ Construction Gas Gas) had to fight off and pass wildcard Declan Wright for second. Sam Bishop (Kawasaki) came from sixth at the gate to sn**ch third from Wright on the last lap.
While Wright and Dean fought for the lead of race two, Briggs passed Haydon Stevens (KTM) for third, with Bishop fourth. Dean led race three from start to finish, as Bishop sn**ched second place from Wright on the last lap. Kyle Breslan (British Army MX Yamaha) had a strong race, coming from sixth to finish fourth.
The fourth and final race saw little overtaking, as Dean led from the start, followed by Wright, Bishop, Breslan and Briggs. That was the order in which they finished.
Overall, for the weekend it was Bishop from Briggs and Breslan, but in the championship it was Bishop champion from Briggs and Stevens.
And that’s it for another year. Bigger and better next year. And remember, motocross is not an easy sport, and anyone who takes part is a winner in life.
