If life has no predetermined meaning, that doesn’t make it empty. It creates a space in which I can choose what I give my attention and energy to.

I don’t know whether the path I’ve chosen will lead me where I currently imagine it will. But since I’ve been given this life, I choose to create, to explore who I am, and to leave a little more life behind through my actions than there was before me.

WOMEN HAVE BECOME FREE. BUT HAVE WE BECOME FREE ON THE INSIDE?

Over the past hundred years, women’s lives have changed dramatically. Today, a woman can study, work, build a career or business, have her own money, choose her partner, get divorced, travel, and decide whether or not to have children.

Legally, we are far freer than generations of women before us. But are we actually freer on the inside?

Laws can change within a generation. Social norms shaped over centuries don’t disappear that quickly. Some simply become our own beliefs.

“A good mother should put her children first.” “You’re a mother.” “Once you have children, your needs come second.” “How can you travel without your children?” “A woman should cope.” “A good wife should keep her family together.”

Today, nobody even needs to make us follow these rules. We can do it to ourselves — feeling guilt or shame when what we want doesn’t match the idea of how a woman or mother is supposed to be.

So if I have the right to choose, but inside I feel I don’t have the right to choose differently, how free am I really?

This doesn’t mean rejecting every social norm. Some may genuinely reflect our own values. But first, we need to notice them.

When “a woman should…”, “a mother must…” or “a normal family should…” appears in your mind, ask:

Why do I believe this? Is it really my value, or have I simply learned that it is “right”? If I choose differently, will anyone actually be harmed, or am I afraid of being judged? If nobody knew about my choice, would I still make the same one?

A thought doesn’t become true simply because it has lived in our minds for years.

Perhaps inner freedom starts with noticing these beliefs and realising that we can question them instead of automatically living by them.

What is the first “should” that comes to mind when you think about being a “good woman” or a “good mother”?

DO YOU FEEL DOWN WHEN YOU COME BACK FROM HOLIDAY TOO?

My husband recently said that people come to beautiful places like this, enjoy the sea, sunshine and bright colours, and then go home and feel depressed. I understand what he means. Everything here is so beautiful that even an ordinary walk feels like an adventure. Meanwhile, we’re thinking about returning to England, where autumn is beginning and everything looks a little greyer.

It made me wonder: maybe the post-holiday drop isn’t only about leaving a beautiful place, but also about the life we’re returning to? If most of the year is spent in “I have to, I have to, I have to” mode, and holiday is the only time you can finally do what you want, of course going back can feel difficult.

I’m trying to build my life differently. Not so that I never have to do anything, but so that I enjoy doing the things I need to do. I want work, training, family, rest and my own interests to become one life that I genuinely want to live, rather than separate lives I constantly switch between.

This trip has been a chance to test that in practice. I continued training, running online classes and doing a little work, while also swimming, exploring and spending time with my family. My usual rhythm changed and some things dropped away, but I didn’t have to put my whole life on hold to enjoy the holiday.

This isn’t about saying everyone should work or train while away. If you need a complete break, take it. I’m interested in something else: can we build a life that we don’t have to start from scratch after every trip?

Sometimes we move faster, sometimes slower, sometimes with fewer things on our plate. But we keep going, without feeling that all the good things are over and now real life begins again.

I want my life to feel good not only where there is sea and sunshine, but also on an ordinary Tuesday in rainy England, in my work, my training and all the little things that make up everyday life.

“Working on holiday should be illegal.”

Someone said this to me recently, and for some reason this phrase really stayed with me.

Even the word holiday is interesting. We don’t usually say, “I’m going to live somewhere else for a while,” “I’m going to experience something new,” or “I’m going on an adventure.” We say, “I’m going on holiday.” Almost like for a certain number of days we are supposed to officially switch off from our normal life. Don’t work, don’t think about anything work-related, preferably leave all your usual routines behind, because otherwise… “you’re not really having a holiday.”

And it made me think, why do we have this belief that work and rest have to exist on completely opposite sides of our life?

Of course, if your work drains you so much that all you want to do is switch your phone off and not see or hear anything about it for two weeks, then yes, you absolutely need that rest. But I’m much more interested in another idea: can we build a life that we don’t regularly feel the need to escape from?

I’m on holiday now. I swim in the sea, go for walks, spend time with my family, eat good food, explore new places, and at the same time I can run a training session, reply to a client or do some work when I feel like it. And I don’t feel like work has “stolen” my holiday from me. Actually, it feels like my life has simply travelled here with me.

I think I want less and less to divide my life into “this is where I live” and “this is where I take a break from the way I live.”

I’m much more interested in building a life where I can change countries, change my rhythm, work more or less, have new experiences, but not have to put myself on pause.

Maybe one day, instead of saying “I need a holiday from my life,” it will feel more natural to simply say:

“I’m going on my next adventure.”
