First Tournament of the Year!

Ash, Ben, Conall and John took part in the Burns Birthday Bash hosted by Dawn Duellists in Edinburgh.

Our fencers competed in a smallsword, sabre and broadsword, pistols and poetry Tetrathon!

At a fun and dynamic tournament, we had some fantastic results;

Ash took home a bronze 🥉 in open sabre and 🥇 in URG sabre.

Ben took home the gold 🥇 in smallsword, pistols and the overall Tetrathon and an added silver 🥈 in the poetry!

Conall and John both put up some good fights with Conall managing to get to the elimination rounds of sabre.

We're very proud of our team and hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.

Many thanks to for having us!

With the Jacobites outnumbering the redcoats 2:1, the Battle of Sherrifmuir should have been a decisive victory for the Jacobites ... but it wasn't. So what happened?

Inspired by a few members of Saorsa who went to walk the battlefield this November, we thought we'd write a blog about just that!

So to find out, check out our blog about the Battle of Sherrifmuir:

We would like to take a moment to celebrate everyone who came together to make Stramash happen.

A massive thank you to our team of dedicated volunteers who worked hard throughout the day: Hannah, Allyson, Richard, and Miranda, who travelled to Stramash just to help out, as well as Frederick, Moira, Gale, and Raymond, who stayed late after their competition to lend a hand.

We also want to offer our gratitude to Chris and Lauren for lending their expertise as First Aiders. Going above and beyond, they also brought the tuck shop all the way up from York and helped Gayle capture plenty of fantastic Stramash photos. Thank you both so much!

Big thanks also to everyone who worked incredibly hard on the day judging.

We want to thank Gary for helping secure a great ceilidh venue, making some great basket liners, and for his hard work at the event.

As well as Iain, Sibyl, and Hugh for coming together and creating an amazing sculpture to signify the spirit of the event.

A beautiful hand-forged piece, delivered by Flett, was donated and his artisanal dedication blows us away. We are so grateful for his generous support ever since the first Stramash.

We thank Tom for his continued friendship and his awesome sponsorship of a Warhammer and flail replica. They were incredibly well received

And finally, our deepest gratitude goes to one person in particular: Victoria. She is the one who had the original vision for Stramash and built it herself from the ground up. Every year, she does the work of five people, organising, creating, and planning the entire event single-handedly. We are incredibly proud to have her at Saorsa.

In September Victoria had the privilege of being invited to Germany to teach at Tremonia Fechten.
Her class introducing Broadsword went down really well. Looks like we have a few more Broadsword converts in the making.

We are very proud that she us doing her part in making Saorsa international.
Ben also got lots of good fights in and managed to win the mixed weapon fechtschule.
We were overwhelmed by the hospitality, the welcoming atmosphere and the quality of the event.
Thank you to all the friends we made and to the organisers who went over and above for us.
Definitely an event we will be recommending to our students who would like to travel.

Stramash is fast approaching and so it's time to start introducing our Instructors this year!

We're very excited to welcome Ross Bailey (he/him) from the Medieval Combat Group! He will be doing a class on;

"Running the Gauntlet: Sword & Buckler
From German Plays to a Gaelic Finish"

In this class we'll work through some 15th-century sword-and-buckler drawn from Lignitzer, Kal, and Talhoffer, showcasing some basics and some games to sharpen things up a little. Then we’ll use these to “bring it home” to a Gaelic context: translating the same principles to the sword-and-gauntlet pairing shown in 16th-century art with a some more games and a little experimental playtime.

Kit: arming sword or messer, buckler, heavy glove/armguard; limited loaners. Please follow event safety requirements.

It's Ross' first time at Stramash and we're very happy to have him with us this year. An excellent teacher and we are very interested to see his experiments come to life!

Saorsa has had a fantastic year so far and covering it all is no easy task!

However we are excited to share the things Saorsa have been up to in the first eight months of 2025.

In January and July, our beginners’ courses filled up wonderfully, giving us a great group of new Broadsword fencers who are already gearing up for the Wee Stramash this year.

By popular demand, we also launched our very first longsword class — now one of our most popular sessions. (you can catch it on Tuesdays at 8pm if you're interested!)

In April, Ben was delighted, as always, to return to The Art That Adorns You, where he unveiled a new class on close-in smallsword fighting, which was received with great enthusiasm. Thanks as always to Chris and Lauren from YSD for running an awesome event.

Jamie MacPherson ran an excellent Grappling for Broadsword course to help everyone prepare for the Glasgow HEMA Open. As both a fantastic fencer and grappler, Jamie brought a wealth of knowledge that rounded out everyone’s skill set.

The Glasgow HEMA Open itself was, as ever, a brilliant chance to test ourselves. Huge congratulations to Imogen for her well-earned Bronze, and to Brian and Jamie for their outstanding Gold medals.

This year we were also thrilled to support some incredible sword-themed events:
• Fantasy Con Scotland (in partnership with The Elder Scrolls Online) where we ran a demonstration stall showcasing historical swordfighting.
• An event with the Caledonian Starlight Guild, who are creating exciting new experiences for fantasy fans across Scotland.

On the competitive front, Ben tried his hand at sabre at the London HEMA Open. Against world-class fighters, he narrowly missed out on Bronze, placing 4th — the highest finish for any UK fighter. A fantastic achievement we’re all very proud of.

Imogen and Jamie also gave strong performances at Albion, another fiercely competitive tournament.

Victoria had a standout year as an instructor, with the honour of teaching at the McBane Event. An event like no other in the heart of Edinburgh. The McBane event aims to immerse people in the martial context and history of McBanes Era and Victoria ran a class comparing the different broadsword approaches throughout history.

FightCamp was another highlight — her class on using blade actions to funnel opponents into tactical trees was a huge success. Many thanks to Matt and Lucy for organising, to our students for making the trip, and to Tom Ive for the continued friendship.

Now off to germany to teach at before we prepare for Broadsword Fest and Stramash
