September is here.

The last quarter of the year starts now.

Back in January, you probably had goals for your BJJ journey, or whether you should start one.

Try a class, do more classes, improve fitness, lose weight, better defence, a stripe, get back on the mat after injury, maybe even the hope for a new belt or promotion .

The question is: did you achieve them?

If not, there’s still time.

Three months is enough time to build momentum, sharpen your skills, and finish the year stronger than you started it.

Don’t wait for another Monday.
Don’t wait for another month.
Don’t wait for another year.

You’re never too young to start learning, and never too old to begin.

Whether you’re 6 or 60, the hardest part is walking through the door for the first time.

Everyone starts as a beginner. 🥋

A good student isn’t the one who knows all the answers.

It’s the one who listens, asks questions, stays humble, and keeps showing up.

The best progress comes from being coachable.

At Aspinall BJJ, the journey from brown belt to black belt is about far more than technical ability.

By brown belt, you’ve already spent countless years developing your game, refining techniques, and overcoming challenges on and off the mats.

But black belt represents something deeper.

It’s about the values you demonstrate every day.

It’s about how you carry yourself on the mats and off them.

It’s the teammate who helps a beginner without being asked.

The person who welcomes new members and makes them feel part of the team.

The training partner who trains hard, remains humble, and always looks after those around them.

The student who represents the academy with integrity, respect, and professionalism wherever they go.

A black belt should be someone others look up to—not only because of their skill, but because of their character.

They lead by example.

They celebrate the success of others.

They help build the next generation.

They understand that being a black belt is not about being above others—it’s about helping bring others up with you.

At Aspinall BJJ, a black belt reflects the culture of the academy as much as the technical standard of it.

Skill earns respect.

Character earns trust.

And a true black belt embodies both.

As Andy often says, “When you get your black belt, your BJJ journey starts again.”

Because black belt isn’t the finish line.

It’s the beginning of a new chapter—one where learning never stops, responsibility grows, and the opportunity to inspire others becomes even greater.
