How do I want a business owner to feel after we've worked together?

Clear about where they're going and confident about what they need to do next.

Running a business can sometimes feel like having a list of 100 things that all need your attention at once.

And when everything feels important, knowing where to start can be difficult.

A big part of what I do is helping business owners cut through that noise.

What needs attention now?

What can wait?

What will make the biggest difference?

And in what order should we tackle it?

You don't need to change everything overnight.

Small, achievable steps in the right order can create real momentum — and suddenly that long list starts to feel a lot more manageable.

Clarity creates confidence. Confidence creates action. And action creates progress.

I’m a big believer that you should never stop learning.

Personal and professional development has always been important to me.

Sometimes that’s formal — taking a course, developing a new skill or building on an existing area of knowledge.

Sometimes it’s much more self-led. Reading, researching, listening to podcasts and seeking out different perspectives to keep up with what’s changing in business.

And sometimes it’s simply getting out there.

I enjoy visiting shows and expos, listening to people from different industries and hearing first-hand about the challenges, opportunities and changes they’re seeing.

Working with businesses across different sectors means I don’t think development should be limited to learning about one particular industry.

There’s always something you can take from how another business or sector approaches a problem and apply it somewhere completely different.

The more I learn, the more experience and ideas I can bring to the businesses I work with.

For me, development isn’t something you finish. It’s something you keep doing.

August has a habit of testing how well a business really works.

With staff holidays, school holidays and people understandably taking some well-earned time off, many businesses find themselves operating with fewer people than usual.

And it can expose some interesting things…

What happens when the person who normally does something isn’t there?

Does somebody else know how to do it?

Can decisions still be made?

Do customers get the same level of service?

Does everything start finding its way back to the business owner?

None of this means there’s something wrong with the business. However it can highlight where knowledge, responsibility or processes rely a little too heavily on one person.

And that’s useful.

Because as a business grows, you want people to be able to take holidays — including the owner — without everything grinding to a halt.

It’s often when resources are stretched that you find out where a business could be stronger.

First of the month SME Top Tip: Don’t recruit on emotion - recruit with a plan!

When you’re busy, stretched and trying to do too much, hiring another person can feel like the obvious answer.

But before you put out that job advert, take a step back and ask yourself the following questions:

What does the business actually need?
What will this person be responsible for?
What will they take away from you or the existing team?
What decisions will they be able to make?
And what does success in the role actually look like?

I’ve seen plenty of businesses recruit because they’re busy, or promote a good member of the team because it feels like the natural next step, without first thinking about the structure around them.

Sometimes that’s when a new hire — or a well-intentioned promotion — can actually create more problems than it solves.

Recruitment can be a brilliant part of business growth. Just make sure you’re recruiting for the business you need, not simply reacting to the pressure you’re feeling today.

As your business grows, your role needs to grow with it.

In the early days, being involved in everything often makes sense. You're making the decisions, solving the problems, speaking to customers and keeping everything moving.

But as the business grows, that same approach can start to hold it back.

If every decision needs you, every problem comes to you and too much knowledge sits in your head, there's a limit to how far the business can grow.

Good leadership isn't about having all the answers or doing everything yourself.

It's about giving your team clarity, putting the right structure around them and trusting people to take ownership.

The goal isn't to become less important to your business.

It's to build a business that doesn't depend on you for everything.

Sometimes the next stage of growth isn't about doing more. It's about leading differently.

Some of the businesses I work with are doing really well.

They’re growing.
They’re winning new customers.
They’re taking on more people.
They’re seeing new opportunities.

And that’s often exactly when the challenges start to change.

What worked when you hired your first member of staff might not work with five. And what worked with five might not work with ten.

The owner can’t be involved in every decision anymore. Processes that were once manageable start taking too much time.

And being busier doesn’t always mean being more profitable.

That’s where I can help.

I work alongside business owners to look at what’s happening — from structure and processes to profitability, people and plans for growth — and help put the foundations in place for the next stage.

Sometimes needing to change isn’t a sign that something’s gone wrong - It’s a sign that your business has grown!

Sometimes you don't need a consultant for months - you just need a couple of hours of focused thinking.

That's exactly why I created my SME Power Hours.

Two hours, focused entirely on your business and whatever is getting in the way.

It could be:

A problem you can't seem to get to the bottom of
A difficult decision you need to make
An idea or opportunity you want to explore
Growth that's creating new challenges
A process that just isn't working
Or simply feeling a bit stuck and not knowing what to tackle first

I’ll help you get under the bonnet of the issue, work through it together and turn the conversation into practical next steps.

I promise there is no long-term commitment and no jargon. It will be just two focused hours to help you get some clarity, make confident decisions and take action.

Put some time in your diary to work on your business, not just in it!

It doesn’t need to be a day or even half a day..

Just an hour without emails, calls or the usual day-to-day noise can be enough to step back and ask:

What’s working?
What’s getting in the way?
Where are we wasting time?
What could we be doing better?
What’s the one thing I should focus on next?

When you’re busy running a business, it’s very easy to spend all your time dealing with what’s directly in front of you.

But giving yourself a little space to think is often where the changes that improve growth, profit and control actually start.

Does your business depend too heavily on you?

If every decision, problem and day-to-day task finds its way back to you, it becomes very difficult to step back and focus on where the business is going.

And eventually, that dependency can make growth slow, exhausting — or even impossible.

Good systems, clear processes and the right structure aren't about adding unnecessary red tape.

They're about building a better business.

A business that can grow without everything relying on you.
A business that operates more efficiently and grows profit.
A business with better visibility and control over cash flow.
And a business where you have the headspace to make better decisions about what comes next.

More control creates more confidence.

And ultimately, your business should support your life — not consume it.
