Just a reminder for the Sale Area Model Engineering Society Open Weekend on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th September. Things start from 10:00AM both days, catering will be provided for visiting members from other Model Engineering Societies. If you are planning to visit with a loco, please remember to bring a copy of your club insurance and the latest boiler certificate if running a steam loco.

Today we pause to remember and honour John Phelan, a true cornerstone of Sale Area Model Engineering Society.

As a founder member, John helped shape the society into what it is today. His dedication didn’t stop there, he was a familiar and valued face on the Wednesday maintenance team, always ready to lend a hand, share his knowledge, and keep things running smoothly.

Many will fondly remember Sundays with John at the helm of his 3½” LMS 8F, giving countless passengers enjoyable rides. His quiet commitment, skill, and generosity brought pleasure to so many, week after week.

John will be deeply missed, not just for all he did, but for who he was. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Rest in peace, John.

Young Engineer Triumphs: Connor Cheevers Wins 2025 Young Model Engineer of the Year

A dedicated and passionate young railway enthusiast has been crowned Young Model Engineer of the Year 2025, with Connor Cheevers taking top honours for his commitment, skill, and contribution to the hobby.

Connor joined the Sale Area Model Engineering Society (SAMES) in 2019 at just 12 years old, and quickly made an impression. From the outset, he demonstrated enthusiasm and a strong willingness to learn, regularly helping with essential tasks such as setting out signals, pairing passenger trucks, and assisting with end-of-day shutdowns.

Eager to get hands-on experience, Connor showed a particular determination to become a locomotive driver. He began by learning to operate diesel and electric engines before progressing to steam. His dedication paid off when he was officially passed to drive locomotives on his 16th birthday. Since then, he has become a familiar face at the controls, regularly driving on Sundays.

Connor’s engineering abilities extend beyond driving. In 2022, he acquired a Simplex locomotive and spent two years carefully restoring it, drawing on advice from more experienced members of the society. He is now continuing to develop his skills with the restoration of a Maid of Kent locomotive.

In addition to his engineering achievements, Connor has shown a strong commitment to safety and volunteering. He recently completed First Aid training and earned his certification, further contributing to the club community. Beyond SAMES, he also volunteers at the full-scale East Lancashire Railway, gaining valuable experience in a professional heritage railway environment.

Widely regarded as a credit to the society, Connor Cheevers has been recognised not only for his technical skills but also for his attitude, dedication, and community spirit. His award as Young Model Engineer of the Year 2025 highlights him as a standout example of the next generation of engineering talent.
