Does your Teen know your number? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Recently, I was taking a walk and I met a young girl who had stumbled of her bike and had a sprained ankle. She was in tears and the mother in me could not help but stop and ask her how I could help.

She could barely move so my next instinct was to ask for her mom's number so she could come by and pick her up. Unfortunately, she did not know her mom's number and there begun our dilemma....

Your child /teen must take the time to learn at least one of their parents' numbers as well as their address in the event of any emergency.

It's interesting how much your teens can commit to memory, let vital numbers be one of them.

So you want to know what happened with the young girl right? Thankfully, her gran lived a few houses away from her fall so I helped her wheel her bicycle there while she hopped (painfully) to safety...

My grandfather of blessed memory loved to gather us his grandkids around him and teach us parables and sound words of wisdom. One of such is "Time and tide wait for no man"- a timeless ode to the concept of Time Management.

As teens go back to school (and even beyond, as a life skill) , they need to master the fine art of Time Management.

Time Management is the ability to use one's time effectively or productively. For teens this productive energy should be channelled into chores, school work or some form of vocation.

Here are a few pointers to guide your teen to make the right decisions regarding their time:

1. Create your time : ensure that you create time for every responsibility that you have from chores to study to rest.

2. Use check lists: or to do lists. These are very vital so you don't slip up on your tasks. From experience, when you keep a detailed to do list you find that you are able to achieve tasks much faster

3. Set deadlines: a deadline is your best lifeline when you want to achieve your tasks (get the mom joke? 🤣🤭)
Ensure that beside every task you have outlined on your to do list, you assign a time by which it should be completed. That way, your tasks are not open-ended and you can hold yourself accountable

4. Eliminate interruptions: identify those things that can set you back from achieving your goal- scrolling through tiktok videos or chatting with a friend when during your assigned task can take more time away from you than you could possibly imagine. Set your self up for success during your tasks by removing those things that will set you back in time

5. Focus on one thing: do not try to do too many things at the same time, rather fix your focus on one thing at a time. When you have successfully completed the one thing, move on to the next. This will not only help in time management but it will improve the quality of what you do.

6. Take some breaks: I am a big fan of taking short breaks in between your work. This gives you the time to ease stress and come back to your work refreshed and renewed.

I hope you have found these tips useful.

I once had a teenage friend who taught me the phrase "Don't be sorry, be different "

Pause and think for a while, what does that mean?

He meant it's easy to just say sorry but how about you make a choice to turn 360 degrees so that what you are sorry for does not become a repeat occurrence.

In managing relationships with peers and others, teenagers might be faced with conflict.

Seeing that this is Normal, it is important for teenagers to develop the skill of apologizing properly.

I hope this infographic helps teenagers move on from being sorry to being different.

Teenagers today are faced with many challenges. Today we will talk about just 4 of them:

Peer pressure is as name suggests the direct or indirect influence of peers on a teenager's decision making. Peer pressure can make a teenager make flighty and wrong decisions

Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity. It can affect a teenager's behaviour and personality

Bullying occurs when a teenager is subject to habitual hurt or harm either physically or emotionally

Managing social media can be tough for teenagers (and indeed people of all ages) as are just beginning to learn the art of self regulation and boundaries.

We can help teenagers thrive above these challenges by having open and honest conversations with them. It is vital to keep communication with your teenager open by maintaining a positive relationship with him or her.

For issues like depression it is important to seek medical help from trained mental health professionals to avoid aggravated cases.

Most schools have antibullying campaigns which is a step in the right direction. Teens must be encouraged to speak up when faced with bullying and parents should take the necessary steps to confront authorities when their children are bullied at school.
Online bullying is also an issue that should not be underrated and your communication with your teenager should help resolve that issue.

As for managing social media effectively, teenagers should be taught the fine art of self regulation and maintaining boundaries.

I hope this short piece on teen challenges has been insightful.
What other challenges can you identify in Teens?

I promised to give you my gist this week so I will talk a bit about my dating life as a teen. Spoiler alert....it was not too adventurous but hey it was enough adventure for me🤣

So introverted Edirin managed to have a boyfriend in the final year of high school. My only criteria for selection were the cuteness of the guy and him liking me... well obviously until I found out there was another girl.

What was disastrous about my dating life however was I started to date on a rebound- I would not recover from one relationship before I got into another and met one disappointment or the other with the said 'cute guys'. All this happened before Uni by the way.

By the time I got into Uni, I had an aversion for guys and masked my fear for being dumped with spirituality. My friends still tease me till today on my harsh responses to guys advances as a means to protect myself from hurt.

It's interesting how my teenage experiences impacted on my adult dating life and interpersonal relationships.

So is your teenager dating yet? Do you know? How can you help them make responsible decisions that will keep their hearts protected?

Let me know your thoughts on teen dating or funny stories in the comments section below.

P.S. My display picture is an AI generated picture of me but is what I looked like as a teenager. Isn't technology amazing?

It's a new week and I thought I would share a few stories about me this week....I can literally see antennas rising scoping for gist! Lol! Well let's hope I don't disappoint.

I would say I am highly introverted and as a teenager, I spent way too much time cooped up in my room alone with my thoughts. Being a first child , a day student with siblings in boarding school was a good recipe for my nerd status.

Only when I left home for University did I find the joy of friendships and humour and since then I would say my life has been richer for it.

My desire is to help teens find a safe space where they can express themselves, connect meaningfully with others, explore their identity and reach for greatness.

This is what we do at The Teen Growth Club and I look forward to meeting and impacting every teenager in our circle.
