Thanks very much for this!

What a lovely little report! If you didn’t know what else goes on in our great village, this’ll help😊

Sunday Spotlight: Laverstock & Ford CC

On any summer weekend, 23 Church Road is more than just a sports ground. It's a meeting place, a gathering point and, for generations of local families, somewhere that memories are made.

Cricket's return to Laverstock wasn't simply about creating another team. It was about bringing a traditional village sport back to the parish. After years without regular cricket, volunteers transformed football practice pitches land at the complex into a functioning cricket ground. Local businesses, the parish council, community grants and countless hours of volunteer work helped make it happen, with sight screens, covers, equipment and facilities built from the ground up.

What makes the club special is that it isn't just a cricket club.

It shares its home with Laverstock & Ford F.C, one of the area's best-known non-league football clubs. While football supporters know 23 Church Road (The Dell) as home to Wessex League action under the floodlights, summer transforms the same venue into a thriving cricket ground where families and senior players enjoy a different game on the same community site.

That shared identity reflects the history of sport in the village. The football club, founded in 1956, has grown from local league football to become an established name in the Wessex League, continually investing in facilities at 23 Church Road that benefit the wider sports club and community. Floodlights, improved infrastructure and ongoing development have helped create a venue used throughout the year rather than for a single sport.

The cricket section has embraced exactly the same philosophy.

Rather than existing in isolation, it has become another strand in the sporting life of Laverstock and Ford, welcoming experienced cricketers, newcomers and young players alike. On one weekend the clubhouse may be full of football supporters discussing promotion hopes; on the next it's players enjoying tea after an afternoon in the sun. Different sports, but the same volunteers, the same facilities and often the same families.

In an era when many grassroots clubs face increasing financial and volunteer pressures, Laverstock & Ford offers an example of what community sport can achieve. Football and cricket don't compete for attention—they complement each other, ensuring the club remains busy across every season.

It's this sense of belonging that defines the club more than any league table.

Whether you're watching a Wessex League fixture in winter or hearing the sound of leather on willow during a warm July afternoon, Laverstock remains one of the Salisbury communities sporting homes—a place where generations continue to play, volunteer, coach and support together.
