Out Of The D - Masters World Cup O70 and O80's Men

With the Masters World Cup taking place in the Netherlands this summer, a number of Salisbury players have been heavily involved in the competition, battling it out for World Cup medals.

In this post, we take a look at Bede Grossmith and John Youings’ time at the World Cup, starting with Bede and the England Over 70s.

Bede joined up with the England O70s with ambitions of going deep into the competition. They got off to a winning start, edging out Wales 1-0, with a converted penalty corner proving the difference.

That set the tone for an outstanding group-stage campaign. England progressed to the semi-finals unbeaten, winning all five of their matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding just two.

In the semi-final, Bede and England faced the Netherlands and found themselves behind after an early penalty corner. But they showed their character to turn the game around, with Henry Robinson completing a hat-trick as England ran out 3-1 winners and booked their place in the final.

Finals day brought a meeting with a free-scoring Australian side who had scored an incredible 34 goals on their way to the final, conceding just two.

Despite the scoring records, the final was anything but a goal-fest. Henry Robinson struck in the seventh minute to give England the lead, and in a tight and cagey contest, that proved to be the decisive goal.

There was still plenty of tension, with England reduced to 10 players for part of the fourth quarter, but they held firm to secure a brilliant victory.

England O70s - Masters World Champions

An unbeaten tournament, five group-stage wins, a semi-final comeback and a hard-fought final victory.

Congratulations to Bede and all his England teammates on becoming World Champions.

With no Wales O80s team competing at the Masters World Cup, John Youings joined players from Scotland, Wales and Ireland to form the Celts Men’s O80s team for the International Masters Cup.

The Celts produced a strong tournament, finishing with a win, a draw and a loss to secure third place and a bronze medal. They can be particularly proud of their 1-0 victory over the Netherlands B team, a fantastic result on the international stage in their inaugural tournament.

On the final Sunday of the event, the Celts faced Australia in the inaugural Over 80s Octogenarian Cup.

The unbeaten Australian side proved too strong on the day, running out 4-0 winners, but it was a fitting and memorable way to bring a fantastic tournament to a close.

Well done, John, to continue playing international hockey at this level is a fantastic achievement, and you remain an inspiration to us all at Salisbury Hockey Club.

Committee Changes Finalised

This summer has seen a number of changes to the Salisbury Hockey Club Committee, with the final appointment confirmed this week. We are now delighted to announce the committee that for the 2026/27 season.

After completing her term as Chair, Laura Valjak has stepped down from the role but is keen to continue contributing to the club’s success. She takes on the role of Club Secretary, following the departure of Adam Durston-Hillyer from that position.

Matt Salmon steps into the Chair role, taking over from Laura, and will continue to oversee the Marketing Officer role while we look for a longer-term solution for that position.

We are also introducing a new Performance Liaison Officer role this season, created to represent and champion the performance pillar within the SHC Strategic Plan. Andrew Renshaw will take on this important new role, while Adam moves into the Vice Chair position.

After doing a sterling job as Women’s Club Captain, Ash Faircloth has decided to stand down from the role. We are delighted that Verity Plummer, captain of the Ladies 2s, will join the committee as our new Women’s Club Captain.

We are pleased that a strong core of committee members will continue in their existing roles:

With pre-season in full swing and all our key committee roles now in place, we look forward to another exciting season both on and off the pitch.

Each Friday we run a session between 10-11am with the clubhouse open for a drink and cake for those who wish to partake

Flyerz hockey is the name for the grassroots disability inclusive hockey managed under the banner of England Hockey and Access Sport. Salisbury Flyerz allows both disabled and non-disabled people to come together and play a fun, social and inclusive form of the sport.

Sessions and equipment are adapted to ensure inclusivity of any disability and long-term health condition.

We provide the equipment you need but would suggest participants come in clothes and shoes suitable for playing support and a water bottle is highly recommended.

It’s a really fun session with regulars who clearly love playing hockey, carers have commented that participants have gained in confidence and independence.

There is no cost for the event so we would be delighted if you could come and join us at Salisbury Hockey Club.

Out of the D - Hannahs Wedding

On Sunday 26th July, Ladies 1s player Hannah Cornish married Samuel Gibbons in a beautiful ceremony at Priston Mill, near Bath.

Despite a torrential rain in the morning the ceremony saw glorious sunshine, dry weather in a stunning setting, it was the perfect day to celebrate, and everyone who attended had a fantastic time.

We hope they both enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon in Naxos. Hannah we also hope those celebratory prosecco's won’t make preseason training too difficult; Coach Renners will certainly be putting you through your paces.

Everyone at Salisbury Hockey Club sends their warmest congratulations to Hannah and Samuel and wishes them a lifetime of happiness together.
