Hello, welcome to my page. I have been in the Army for over 20 years and qualified as a Personal Trainer a few years ago. Fitness has been my passion for a long time, but this wasn't always the case. I struggled with my fitness and weight in my 20s but then discovered that I wasn't training effectively. Once I learned how to do that, my fitness improved in leaps and bounds and the weight loss followed. I am now fitter and stronger in my 40s than I was in my 20s. As I have suffered various injuries from rugby and horse riding, I was particularly keen to learn how to reduce the chance of further injury and to make myself stronger. I now understand the importance of incorporating stability and stretching exercises into my weekly routine, as well as the usual cardio and strength training. With my military background I have worked with many different types of people and know how to motivate individuals to get their desired results; your goal becomes my goal. If you would like help reaching your fitness and weight goals, get in touch and let's do this!

This will be of interest for those of you trying to lose weight and using a tracker. So I have been using a Fitbit for a number of years but have recently purchased a Garmin. I decided to wear both to compare stats. Now, Fitbit does it’s own calorie counting and tracking whereas Garmin is linked to MyFitnessPal.

Now both of mine are set to have a goal of 2lbs weight loss a week. This should mean a calorie deficit of 1000 calories a day.

Now you will see that the Fitbit is accurate in calculating this. I have burned 2350 according to its data and have 190 left to eat which should give me a total of 1350. A deficit of 1000.

MyFitnessPal however is saying that I still have 692 calories to eat which would give me a total of 1810 and as my Garmin calorie burn for the day was 2301 this only gives me a deficit of about 490. Interestingly the Garmin app says I still have 734 so hasn’t quite synced with MFP and would only leave me with a deficit of 449.

So the lesson is if you are using MFP check carefully what it is telling you. The golden rule:
Deficit of 500 calories per day = 1lb weight loss per week.
750 = 1.5lb
1000 = 2lb
So, if you burn off 2000 calories in a day and eat 1500 calories and do this for 7 days, you will lose 1lb in weight.
(You can do the maths for the rest)!!
