Our first session is completely free with no sign up fee. Private group classes and 1 to1 tuition are available on request. 🥋 WHAT A WEEK AT ISLE OF WIGHT BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU! 🥋

The mats have been packed this week with people showing up, putting the work in and constantly trying to improve themselves — both on the mats and off them.

That’s what we’re building at Isle of Wight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. More than just a place to train, we want to be a community where people support each other, push each other and enjoy the journey together. ❤️

On Thursday, it was brilliant to welcome Harry as he took his first steps on his Jiu-Jitsu journey, while Simon made his return to the mats after some time away. 🙌

Whether it’s your first ever class or your first class back, there’s always a place for you on our mats.

On Saturday, myself and Mason Bland headed over to Portsmouth for his match at the Collision Invitational.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t Mason’s day, with his opponent catching him in a very tight foot lock.

But that’s Jiu-Jitsu…

You win or you learn. 🥋

Anyone who knows Mason knows he’s an absolute beast. He’ll take the lessons from this one, get back to work and come back even stronger. 💪🔥

Then this morning we rounded off the week with a PACKED Sunday Open Mat.

A room full of mat monsters training hard, helping each other improve and — most importantly — enjoying their training.

That’s what it’s all about. 🤙

🥋 AMAZING CLASS LAST NIGHT!

Another fantastic session at Isle of Wight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with hard work, great energy and smiling faces all around! 👊

Last night we focused on the fundamentals of closed guard — principles that are essential for white belts but remain just as important right through to black belt.

We worked on controlling our partner’s posture to prevent them from striking effectively — a great example of why BJJ is such a practical system for self-defence, allowing you to control a would-be assailant using minimal and reasonable force.

From there, we hit a high-percentage sweep into mount before isolating limbs and chaining together several arm locks from S-Mount. 🔥

We finished with sparring, giving everyone the opportunity to put their techniques to the test against resisting partners. It’s fantastic seeing our students becoming more technical and confident every week.

👏 Massive well done to our new starters, Harry and Henry! Both picked up the techniques incredibly quickly and got stuck straight into the sparring. Brilliant effort!

How confident are you that you could protect yourself if somebody grabbed you, knocked you down or physically prevented you from walking away?

Most of us hope we'll never have to find out.

But hope isn't preparation.

Another great week of training in the books — and despite the heat, everyone has been getting after it. 🔥🥵

One of the most rewarding parts of coaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has nothing to do with how many rounds you win or how many people you tap.

As a coach, the goal should always be to develop students who eventually surpass you.

There’s a strange mixture of pride and humility when students who have spent years getting caught by your techniques finally figure out your game. They recognise what’s coming, shut it down, turn the tables and suddenly…

the nail has become the hammer. 🔨

And that’s exactly how it should be.

Developing your students is what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu should be all about. Seeing people grow in confidence, knowledge, ability and character is far more rewarding than trying to stay one step ahead forever.

The fun part?

Now the BJJ arms race begins. 😂

You improve your technique because your training partners have figured you out. They improve because you’ve improved. Then you have to adapt again.

Everyone keeps levelling up together.

That’s what makes a great BJJ room — not one person trying to be the best, but a whole community pushing each other forward. Whether you’re an experienced grappler or someone who has never stepped onto the mats before, there’s a place for you here.

🥋 PRESSURE TESTED. LESSONS LEARNED. TEAM STRONGER. 🥋

Yesterday was a high-octane session on the mats as we put our Position of the Month — Half Guard — to the test. 🔥

After spending time developing the fundamental principles of the position, it was time to see how they held up under real pressure.

We went through a full hour of specific sparring in a shark tank format — one person stays in while fresh training partners keep coming. No easy rounds. No hiding. Just the opportunity to stay composed, apply the principles we've been working on and solve problems as they happen.

And that's exactly what everyone did. 👊

Some techniques worked. Some didn't.

But every failure gave us information. Every mistake became a lesson. Every difficult position showed us something we can improve.

That's what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about.

You either win or you learn.

What made yesterday even better was looking around the mats and seeing people of different ages, abilities, backgrounds and life experiences all training together.

Everyone has their own reasons for walking through the door. Everyone has different challenges outside the gym. But once we're on the mats, we're one team — helping each other improve one round at a time.

We're incredibly proud of everyone who chose to put themselves under pressure yesterday. It takes courage to test your technique when you know things might go wrong. That's where real development happens.

And nobody has to be "fit enough", experienced enough or confident enough before they start.

You just have to start.

We were back to pressure testing the half guard position, building on what we’ve been working recently and exploring more sweeps, attacks and counters — then putting it all into practice during live sparring.

One of the things that always impresses me is just how quickly our students pick up the techniques. Seeing people take something we’ve covered in class and start applying it naturally in their sparring is what it’s all about. 👊

But what makes our academy special isn’t just the Jiu-Jitsu — it’s the people. ❤️

This month we're diving deep into Half Guard, covering everything from entries and sweeps to attacks, counters, and how to put it all together in live sparring.

One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is seeing how quickly everyone picks up the techniques. Every week, our team continues to improve, and last night really showed that. The technical level on the mats was fantastic, with everyone rolling confidently, applying what they'd learned, and showing plenty of determination and grit.
