Club Finals - Ladies Pairs
The competition drew to a close with the Ladies Pairs which saw Debs & Kate emerge victorious over Pauline C & Wendy H.

Attention now turns to the Scarborough Open which starts on Monday.

Club Finals - Ladies Singles & Men’s Pairs

On Wednesday, South Cliff Bowls members played 2 finals on a beautifully warm August day. The ladies singles won by Julia and congratulations to Debs in her first full season of bowling to be runner up.

The men’s pairs was a high quality match up with Tony and Vernon setting the pace. After 18 ends, Pete and Alan had pulled away to win in a game of close ends. Tournament organiser Colin presented the cups

Congratulations to all and again our thanks to the green team who gave produced a wonderful bowling green.

South Cliff hosted the Scarborough League Vets Cup and Plate finals. A large crowd were entertained throughout by 4 teams who bowled well resulting in two very close games in the both competitions. The spectators enjoyed a very tense and enthralling afternoon of bowling.

In the Cup, Filey won by the small margin of 2 shots, over Pickering, with one rink tying. The Shield pitted Filey South Dene against Seamer Sea Horses. The outcome saw both sides win one rink with one drawn. In the end South Dene won by 4 shots overall.

Congratulations to both Filey and Filey South Dene on coming out as the winners and commiserations to the runners-up.

Grateful thanks to James and all at South Cliff BC for hosting the Finals again and for providing the refreshments throughout the afternoon. The green at South Cliff looked fabulous and played well as it has done all season.

After holding three finals - Open League, Vets & Aussie Pairs - in addition to the Club competitions attention now turns to preparation for the Scarborough Open which starts on 7th September.

An afternoon with Coastline Sight & Hearing

We were delighted to welcome to the club members from Coastline Sight and Hearing - a charity which supports people living with sight and hearing loss.

There was a mixture of experienced and novice bowlers - Curtis, Taylor, Graham, Dave, Mickey and (Dave’s support - grandson) Leo and Adie (project coordinator). We enjoyed a cuppa (thanks Lynne) and a bowl. After a bit of practice and instruction, the guys bowled magnificently and could well appear on television in the near future if they continue the standard they have set! Our thanks to John S for helping set up the rinks.

Organised social bowling is every Wednesday and Saturday - meet at 1.45pm for a bowl and a cuppa. All welcome.

Club Triples Day

South Cliff Bowls Club triples day attracted 8 randomly drawn teams to compete over 3 games of 9 ends per game on a day allocated to celebrate the season which is sadly drawing to a close. Our thanks to Colin, Tony and John S for producing Scarborough’s best green which has played well all year.

The first round of matches was very tight with 2 draws out of the 4 matches. After a short break for tea, a second match then a longer break for lunch, it was all to play for in the final matches.

The winning team were successful in all 3 games, scoring well and playing superbly. Congratulations go to Tony, Gary and winning for the second time John H on a great day at the club where the real winner was bowls!

The club wishes to thank all the bowlers and helpers on the day and to Colin for organising this event.

We look forward to the Scarborough Open held jointly with Scalby BC and club finals - all to follow.

We are delighted to report that on Wednesday evening the Red team beat Scalby 6-2. Nearest rivals Filey lost at Seamer 3-5. This means that the Red team are the Open League Champions, a feat last achieved some five years ago

Whistlestop - Seamer Successes

20 teams of 3 players from a range of Clubs - including five teams from South Cliff - enjoyed a day of competitive bowling. Some players were very experienced, some were relatively new to this type of competition where teams play 4 matches - each one lasting 40 minutes - with the outcome being decided on points scored and shots difference - if points were equal. With one match to play, three teams from Seamer and Pete B’s team from South Cliff were on maximum points. The final round of matches saw Margaret H’s Seamer team secure victory with a maximum 8 points. Second place went to Seamer’s Peter L on 7 points and third place to a another Seamer trio - Dave B’s team on 6 points with a superior shot difference from 4th place Jan S’s team from York Railway Institute.

Despite several short showers, play continued throughout the day and the competitors and supporters availed themselves of some excellent food provided by club members and thanks go to James and his helpers for making this happen. A very successful raffle with prizes donated by club members added to the event and thanks go to the green team especially John S. It was gratifying to receive some very positive comments about the quality of the Green, given the protracted lack of rainfall. Many thanks to all members who helped in this event and to Joyce for keeping the score and above all to Pauline T for organising this very successful event.

The Marshall Shield - Quarter-Final

The Club hosted, as a neutral venue, the quarter-final of the Men’s Marshall Shield, organised by Yorkshire Bowling Association, featuring Hornsea BC playing Middlesbrough BC. 3 rinks of 4 players a side with 2 woods each contested 18 ends. The result being determined by the numbers of shots scored. At the half way stage it was very close with 3 shots separating the teams. In the second 9 Middlesbrough began to pull away running out winners by 50 shots to 34. The spectators enjoyed watching an excellent standard of bowling and the Club received some very positive comments on the state of the green despite the lack of rainfall for much of the season.

The vagaries of our weather!

A week ago we had to postpone a cup match due to rain. Today the feeling was that we might not be able, due to the heat, to play a full 18 ends in the League match which pitted the league leaders - Sleights Blue against the bottom club - South Cliff Vikings. In the end, thanks to our proximity to the sea, we were fortunate to play the full 18 ends - unlike some inland clubs who played a restricted number of ends.

The match saw South Cliff give a good account to themselves - John S’s rink won 17-11 and we lost narrowly on Mel & Rosie’s rinks. The aggregate score was a rare tie 42 shots each. The outcome, in points, was 3 to the Vikings and 5 to Sleights Blue. After the match all enjoyed some excellent home cooked cakes courtesy of Mel.

First Aid Course
It was our pleasure to welcome First Aid First firstaidfirst.biz to our club to deliver an informative and entertaining first aid awareness course. The presentations were excellent and members commented about how much they had valued the session. Our thanks to Simon and Frances for a thorough and first class delivery of how we can keep each other safe. Thank you also to Wendy for the most perfect lunch afterwards.
