In yoga philosophy, samskaras are the patterns or impressions we build through repeated thoughts, behaviours and experiences.
We all do love routine don’t we? Maybe you crave it after the busyness of the summer. We like it because the more we repeat it, the more familiar it becomes.
But before long, we can find ourselves living on autopilot. I have this saying in my classes; why repeat the same old yoga sequence? To be fully embodied and present we need to change it up.
But have you thought how you are living on autopilot off the mat? Do you have a negative inner monologue? Do you berate yourself for not having lived the life you wanted today for one reason or another?
I spend a lot of time with myself and during that time I’ve realised where I’ve created patterns which do not serve me. Yoga teaches us that if we breathe, we can pretty much accomplish anything. But we need to create that space away from the noise to make it happen.
I am the guide. In class I’m not there to dictate how your practice should look like. What I’m there to do is to get you out of your own head enough to reset. You pause and learn how to link your breath with movement. And then when you realise how awesome you feel after a practice; you make better choices, you sleep better and after downloading you speak to yourself better. Instead of reacting you take a breath. The pattern has changed and all you did was turn up to a yoga class in a village hall.
Yoga is not an exercise class. It has the power to transform your life if you let it.
